Audio stuttering?

Had an iMac i7 with 4GB ram for a few months and I get lots of audio stuttering - music cuts out for a split second. Happens in various media players. Very annoying - any idea what could be causing this?
 
I've had this in various recent Mac models: MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Mini. There's no fix available from Apple. Your choices are put up with it, return for refund, or return for replacement.

VLC Player is a particular problem on my MacBook Pro. Video is unwatchable much of the time.
