Any way to restore 2G back to 2.2.1?

I have an old jailbroken 4GB 2G and I'd like to do a fresh restore back to 2.2.1**. Is there any way to do this?

** 3.x is laggy on these old phones, that's why.
 
im not 100% sure since ive not owned a 2G but cant you download the firmware you want, hold shift and press restore in itunes the browse to the firmware you want to put on it, ie in this case 2.2.1?
