Just bought a Macbook Pro from the Apple store and received the free iPod touch 8GB. My question is, how do I find out what generation this is? 2nd? 3rd?

Hold the Home button down for about ten seconds. If the Voice Control page comes up, congrats, you have a 3rd gen iPod Touch.
Either way, I'm sure Apple isn't giving away last-gen iPods.

It'll be the latest version.

Only the 32/64 are 3rd gen, the "3rd" gen 8GB is really a 2nd gen. It has no voice control and half the ram meaning NO multitasking etc

I don't know what you mean by "really," but the OP certainly got a 3rd generation iPod touch. No one cares if it has less RAM and no voice control, it is called a "Third Generation iPod touch"!
The third-generation iPod touch does have multitasking, even the 8 GB, so you really need to think before you post.
2nd generation
Think again:rolleyes:

No.
The 8GB is the same as the 2nd gen. It has the same processor, the same GPU, and most importantly, the same build of iOS. That means, it won't support multitasking.

You need to research before you post, go to Apple's website to buy a touch it says 32/64 has "Faster performance"
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_touch?mco=OTY2ODA5OQ
Go to wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipod_touch
8GB is not listed under 3rd gen because there is no difference between it and the 2nd gen. 32GB/64GB have doubled ram so they are like the 3GS.
Apple won't let you multitask with 128mb of ram thus why the 2G IPT/iPhone 3G can't do it. Only the 3GS and the 32/64GB Ipod touch 3rd gen

I'm pretty sure that the 3rd Generation iPod touch has a 8 GB model...so.....stop arguing because I'm right in that case.
If you don't believe me still, you can look at this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa;jsessionid=8F79CE9FB2D31EA539EA3DEA1223B51F.node0?messageID=11346293

Haven't you ever heard of not listening to Wikipedia all the time?

"It also included a more powerful GPU. It was available in 32 and 64 GB capacities, for $299 U.S. and $399 U.S., respectively."
The 3rd gen does still come in 8gb capacity, though it's just a hangover from the 2nd gen. ONLY the 32 and 64gb have the new GPU, CPU and RAM.

That's not the point though. These posters think that the 8 GB iPod touch is still considered a 2nd gen.

Wrong, iOS 4.0 will add multitasking to compatible devices.
even the 8 GB
Wrong again, only the 32 GB and 64 GB third-generation iPod touch will support multitasking in iOS 4.0 at least without jailbreaking.
so you really need to think before you post.
Good advice you should try it.

I'm not here for a fight, but I don't need someone telling me to "think before I post" when you are clearly wrong about the 8GB.
Asides from that here is what is fact
The 2nd Gen 8GB and 3rd Gen 8GB are completely identical, there is no difference at all. "3RD Gen 8GB" will not get multitask etc
The 3rd gen 32/64 will get all new features of 4.0 that a 3GS would.
End of case

Please continue the discussion without telling each other to think/research before you post. There's obviously some confusion about the issue, and I'm sure the OP would appreciate that the discussion continue until an answer can be agreed upon.
Carry on...:)

Isn't it obvious enough?
And anyways, even if the 8GB was considered part of the 3rd gen, it would not support multitasking. Not only it is not powerful enough, but as a company, Apple wants you to buy new products

From Apple's website (http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/ios4-software-update.html):
Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking, custom wallpaper, and Bluetooth keyboard support are available only with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).
That's not the point though. These posters think that the 8 GB iPod touch is still considered a 2nd gen.

I don't really care what you call it, but the 8 gigaboot "3rd gen" touch has the exact same hardware AND part number as the "2d gen" touch. They are one and the same, apple is giving away a free 200 dollor rebate with macs so they expect people to get the one thats free(the "2nd gen" touch) hoping to get rid of it for september. I just recieved the same rebate, and bought a 32 gig one. It is somewhat of an opinion, but the fact that they have the same hardware and capabillities, let alone part number, seems to mee that they are the same generation.

If they never update the 8GB again will it be a 8th gen iPod touch in 2015? :D:D
Just kidding

It actually is considered 2nd gen, it's called the 8gb iPod Touch (Rev2).
