this is one of my fav songs. Watch the movie Fight Club with Edward Norton and Brad Pit and wait 'til the last scene in the movie to hear this song. It's fits the situation sooooo good. I would watch the whole movie just to see that part with this song.

I also love this song.
People don't talk about, think about, or listen to The Pixies nearly enough.

American Idol will do that to you.
Surfer Rosa is such a good album. Gigantic, River Euphrates, Where Is My Mind.. There was a tribute album a while back by the same name. One very good cover of Veloria done by Weezer. This was back in the Blue Album days when they had talent.
I also love this song.

Surfer Rosa is such a good album. There's an understatement if there ever was one. Surfer Rosa (& Come on Pilgrim) is an awesome album... :)

you jest... they're one of the most discussed/hyped/overrated bands since the Beatles.

You beat me to it. Whenever I get into a Pixies argument, I am always told that I "just don't get it." Whatever happened to personal preference? I just prefer music that doesn't suck.
I do like the slower version of "Wave of Mutilation," though.

I get similar things... I've just never really rated them, personal preference, nothing more.
I don't think they're especially bad or anything, just... mediocre, and certainly not deserving of the praise that gets heaped on them, the same with The Breeders really.

There are only 5 Pixies albums and it's some of the best stuff I've ever listened to. :) More so the earlier stuff.

Frank Black was very influenced by the Beatles. The Beatles, as great as I think they are, were overrated but I disagree 110% with The Pixies being overrated! Quite the opposite from what I've heard (or haven't, as the case may be)

I disagree with anyone who says The Beatles were overrated.

Well I disagree with anyone who disagrees with me saying The Beatles were overrated. :p No, wait! Weren't they bigger than Jesus? Of course!
Really, they are great but too much hype in their day. Anyway, Where is My Mind is a brilliant song.

The Beatles were a *bleeping boy band* and their initial success was largely down to great marketing... that and paying lots of girls to scream a lot at them of course. ;)

I'm with narco, "Where is my mind" is a great song, but let us not say The Beatles were overrated!

clearly, the Pixies were not the most technically proficient musicians of their time, their first few albums came out when Metallica (&the like) was starting to blow the minds out of anyone who managed to catch them w/ the blistering riffs and solos. But you do have to marvel at the influence that the Pixies had on the succeeding generation of musicians who took their lead and carried things further. From Nirvana to Arcade Fire and every band of note in between; it's undeniable that the Pixies had an influence on the general sound or theme of the music that was created by rock bands post-Pixies.

Come on now, Pixies are awesome. And yes, I was listening to them before Fight Club, unlike most of their new "fans."

Well, the key word is "initial success." They may have started out as a boy band with good marketing and a sound that they may have not created, but they did turn into a great band with great pop tunes. Plus you have to take into consideration all the bands that they inspired. Just like the Sex Pistols weren't really a good band, but they inspired so many GREAT bands.

Well, the Pixies fans I speak of were those thrift-shopping alterna-freaks from the mid 90's. And sorry about KMFDM, I just can't dig it! :)

Which is sometimes all that it takes to establish a 'phenomenon'. ;)
The Beatles and their latter success was (also) the result of THAT one great marketing idea, had they not paid hordes of girls to scream everywhere they went and played, then I think it's doubtful that they would have achieved anywhere near the levels of success with their musical ability alone... something bourne out by the critical and public response to their music before the hype took over, and that resultant hype was not because of their music.
It is of course difficult to argue, and impossible to refute that they were influential though.

I remember when my friend gave my a Pixies CD a few years ago when I was doing my HSC. He said "This is the best band ever!". The album was 'Doolittle'. So I listened to it. I didn't get it. I didn't see what he was on about.
But a few months later I gave it another try and listened to it properly. I was hooked! I played like 10 times over (mind you Pixies albums are quite short :p). From then on I have been a Pixies fan (and consequently hated Nirvana:p ).
I like Doolittle a little more than Surfa Rose. I think it shows have diverse they could be. i.e. the psychopathic 'Tame', the beautiful 'Hey' (with that lovely guitar solo) and the last 30 seconds of 'No 13 baby' is the best music ever written! Listen to it! You will have multiple eargasims!
I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet - but get the Pixies Doco 'Gouge'. It shows Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead), PJ Harvey and David Bowie (among others) talking about how great the Pixies were. So pissed I live in Australia and couldn't see them at Cochella. The closest I got to see them was on tv on Letterman
I don't think the Beatles were overrated. When people talk about the Beatles they think about the early 'Help' days. Revolver and the White Album are amazing albums. They inspired a legion of musicians. The Chemical Brothers are heavily influenced by the sound on Revolver.
Its 40 years on and young people like me are still listening to the Beatles - they must have been doing something right.
