[Edit: I have since started a spreadsheet for Cases, Sleeves and Bags...found here: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Av1TgV270uIadFd5VWh3MGR5bnV2TDFxRWFnV2p5eHc&hl=en

Anybody can edit...feel free to list your bags there for the benefit of everybody. Thanks!]

Ok guys. I am on a search for the ideal carry bag. But this is more than a search for the case...it is an image issue.

How are you carrying your case and avoiding looking too Geekish, girly, or whatever term may apply?

In other words, what is the best way to carry the iPad discreetly. I don't care what people think, but a guy walking into a room with a strap over their shoulder is going to draw some attention (Starbucks doesn't count).

BUT, this not just about an image issue. It is more about comfort COMBINED with image. This is not just about what men look like carrying purses in to places like Lowes or Tuesdays. Women have it a little easier because they can throw their iPad in their purse. Guys have to be a lot more selective, IMHO.

Currently I am using a 9x12 neoprene case that is a little too large. It was for an 11" netbook...but in a lot of regards, it is pretty nice. It has two front facing pockets that are quite large as each one that opens extends all the way across to the other side such that they are over lapping. I have my pad in a Incase Grip that is close fitting and not too much bigger than the iPad...but it does eliminate several options. I like the freedom of having the iPad as slim as possible for most uses, well protected, and it slips right into it's bag when it is time to travel.

But, the neoprene case is a little too big. So, I am trying to find a smaller one...like for a 10" netbook. I am also trying to find one that has a shoulder strap as an option.

I kind of like this one so far:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180515893450&_trksid=p2759.l1259

But I don't like how it opens ALL the way. My current one only opens along the top and then 2/3 along the sides. If I am sliding the iPad in and out a bunch, it is easy to do.

So, what do you think...would you wear this bag out into public? I mean to places like grocery shopping, lowes, to the work out gym (and not stuffed in the workout bag).

Ladies...I don't mean to exclude you...you have it good...I have always envied you all when it comes to tech gear. From the days of the Newton that BARELY fit in an overside slacks pocket...to now with the iPad. I would be so easy to get a bigger purse...and what an awesome setup that would be.

Thanks for any feedback!

I think any case specially designed for the iPad with a strap is bound to resemble a purse. Best just to bite the bullet and get matching shoes.

Tumi have a couple that are slim compact and respectable for a man to carry. Nothing girly about it at all.

My wife said something similar when I was showing her a Pink Case that looked smaller than the one I have.

Hmm...not too bad. Still a little large...except I see you just edited with a smaller one. This does give me an idea to check Office Depot which I haven't done so far.

Thanks!

You can call it a "messager bag" all you want but it's still a man purse.

Kifaru's Koala bag. You can place the iPad in the back, padded compartment that is really intended for quick access to a handgun, or if you use that compartment for the designer's original intended purpose, and the iPad does fit in the front compartment just fine, even with stuff in the pockets and zippered internal mesh pocket.

Advantage is in no way would this bag every be confused for a purse or murse and it is QUITE durable.

I ordered the Waterfield Design Ultimate Sleeve.

I think it looks very sleek. It's fitted for the ipad, it has a micro fiber face that cleans the ipad, it has rigid protection woven into the fabric and it doesnt look like a purse or a bag so to speak

+1 on the Waterfield Ultimate Sleeve - it's got plenty of padding for the iPad with nothing frilly about it. You can take it as a plain sleeve or when ordering add D-rings, strap and an attachment pouch. I preferred the plain sleeve. Easy to transport alone or throw into a backpack/case when I need to travel with other things.

The thinner the shoulder strap the more feminine it looks. Get a wide strap like the ones found on real messenger bags that messengers use.

Neoprene is for sissies, or the spongy hospital shoe set!!!

But seriously....
My very real fear of exposing my naked iPad in public was eased, by first, downloading a drawing app, then, with my precision stylus in hand, I doodled the biggest iPenis I could dare to imagine on the 9.7" screen, (per Apple's specs) and it worked!! No one wondered what an iPad carrying guy like me might fantasize about, my rendering is a very clever distraction, I must say. I didn't even know I was such an arteest! and there's nothing wrong with that. It's no still life, I'll tell ya that!

It's just a little risky, you know...touch screen and all, but I have a power support anti glare screen guard on and only the battery is goin' down. I'm good to go, safely doodlin' for hours all over town!

So guys, get your drawing skills up, and show that oh so cruel world that you don't need no Freakin' neoprene!

Accessorizing properly is the key to remaining manly while carrying the ipad in public.

I always have my Glock 19 in a fashionable leather holster on my right hip. In Ohio, you can "open carry" legally. An ipad in a soft leather carrying case is manned-up when paired with an exposed firearm.

Seriously!

I am ever so slightly paranoid, so I have mine inside its Vaja iVolution, inside a neoprene case inside a good ol' man bag. Currently I'm using the 10" Knomo Bungo messenger bag in brown, and am loving it. Fits my iPad, Bluetooth GPS, MiFi wireless router and a host of other gubbins without feeling too bulky or heavy, and also looks great. Gives me a place to hang my cans on the strap, a bit of head room for sunglasses and space for other manly things like Vaseline.

I currently have two bags and a third on order.

I agree with the comment about the strap. The wider it is, the less feminine it looks. I have two designer bags from the Men's lines and my third will be the Muzetto 10" Personal bag.

I personally feel that they all look masculine, but YMMV.

The point is, a lot of people are designing iPad accessories that just don't take into account male vs. female style and preferences!

A carrying bag is a fashion accessory as much as anything else, no matter how much a person wants to deny it. Even if I buy a plain black vinyl, zippered bag for my laptop, for example, it makes some kind of statement about me as I walk around with it. (Probably says "He likes things plain vanilla and boring. He's practical but more interested in saving a buck than in treating his gear a little bit better.")

IMO, the iPad is small and thin enough that any traditional bag with straps, designed to carry it, is going to have a feminine look to it. It's somewhat unavoidable, because we're mentally conditioned to think that carrying bags with a pair of straps are only needed by guys when we're carrying around bigger, heavier stuff. (So a gym bag would NOT have this issue, nor would a bag made for a 17" laptop.)

Personally, I think the iPad looks the most "professional" when it's carried around with a simple "book cover" type sleeve around it, (like the original iPad case Apple sells for it). This makes it look like you're carrying around a notepad or a day-timer organizer or something. It's not too flashy or obvious, and the device is light and thin enough that it's not a big deal to carry it under your arm this way.

If you really need both hands free all the time for other stuff, you can probably just throw the iPad in a bigger book-bag or attache case or what-not, along with some of your other stuff?

This is the bag I use as well. I actually had the bag already from my Fujitsu P1620 and find that the ipad AND apple case fit absolutely perfectly in it, yay for recycling items. If I'm walking around I'll usually just hand carry my ipad in its apple case, but there are times, like when I take my motorcycle to the gym, where I need it over my shoulder.

This is what I use. The messenger has a laptop pocket to support a 14 inch laptop but the iPad fits well. There is also a inner zipper which is smaller and iPad seems to fit well in there. Good bag to carry with a book or 2 and an iPad.

I've been using this Jack Spade bag for the past month:
http://www.zappos.com/jack-spade-warren-street-lightweight-canvas-wide-strap-messenger-tank

The color and wide strap make it look reasonably manly. It holds my iPad inside a neoprene sleeve, the charger, foldable headphones, and a small notebook.

While considering this I showed it to my gf. First word out of her mouth, almost pavlovian knee-jerk reaction - "murse". Normally a comment like that wouldn't deter me, but in conjunction w/ the price it put it out of the running. I do agree it's wonderful, maybe if I could just see one in person... I really don't understand why people are so concerned about this whole "manpurse" thing. I mean yea it's over the top if you wear one just to hold things.. But if you use one to carry your MacBook or iPad around it really isn't a big deal. I'd prefer a strap instead of having to hold one with handles.

Thank you and I agree. My wife picked up one of the Kenneth Cole leather "Murses" at their outlet store. In NYC no one seems to care. Now if I carried this around the little town where I grew up in Texas? I'd catch some stares. Some things about home I don't miss!

What do you usally wear in public? If its not formal go with a nylon drawstring backpack. Put some memory foam on the inside for protection and be aware of pickpocketers.

Being from Texas I hear you. However, I just purchased a Tumi bag for 69 dollars at the outlet, it is the T-Pass, smallest one they have, it fits the Ipad. Fits a MBP 13" if you want to, chargers, one at a time of course, but it is a very versatile, and it is not a murse. Very nice bag if you ask me, and for the price, you can't beat it.

Well, I don't suppose the "appearance" is so much an issue as it is just being comfortable. No...I take that back appearance is an issue. I am a high school teacher...in a smaller city...and I run into students all the time.

My students already think I am a goof ball/nerd, whatever, etc. After a few weeks/months of school each year, it is unavoidable that they are going to think that of me. About that time I will play them my theme song "White and Nerdy" by Wierd Al. But I don't need to add to that image.

Anyway, if you live near a REI, they have a very nice selection of messenger style bags. I shopped the isle for about an an hour and almost decided on a bag...but because I am 2 hours away from the store to be able to return/exchange, I held off till I could do some more Internet research.

I use an Eagle tactical bug out bag. iPad fits in a padded compartment on one side, my spare H&K USP .45C and three mags for same fit on the other side.

Remember, inclusion of a legally concealed large bore pistol in the package trumps any mention of "man purse" or effects thereof on one's psyche.

I would buy one of those if they didn't have all those zippers and crap on it. Something like those bags, but more for a man of business than for a traveller.

To the OP, your thread title was misleading friend. I'm seeing WAY too many purses for a "MANLY thread". Any Tom Bihn product is truly amazing FWIW.

Teens, gotta love them right?

My daughter and I (14yo model of said teen group) both have the timbuk2 net book messenger, black for her, grey/lime for me. I can throw some extra junk in there and it works well. I'd not have an issue with any guy I know carrying it, except the strap is a bit short I think, so you might have issues. I carry it over my shoulder not messenger style.

If you needed to transport more books and stuff, I might jump up to the next size....

Otherwise, kids are ruthless in the big bad world so nothing might work really... Except them being in awe of the iPad!

Good luck!

I think it all comes down to the eye of the beholder.

In my case, style and functionality go hand in hand. It can't meet my needs then I skip over it no matter how awesome it looks.

I personally can not stand the black nylon sytle bags that look like the free laptop bags most corporations give their employees. I prefer leather first off, then a messenger bag style, and then it must function and hold all my belongings that I plan on keeping in the bag. It also cannot be too big and bulky.

Those are my requirements. Some may think my bags look too much like a purse, but IMO, it's just a slightly smaller version of my laptop bag that I have been carrying for years. So, is it the size that turns off people? I've actually got quite a few compliments of my bags from both man and women. I even had one guy say that would be the ONLY bag he would ever carry (which I found sort of amusing).

I never understood the whole "man purse" thing. Just because a guy carries a bag it has to be a man purse? Why is there not the same thing for when a woman carries a briefcase?

Maybe it is just me. Maybe I got up too early. Who knows?

Whatever it is, have a great Monday. :)

Definitely. Be confident in what you carry and just go with it!

I've skipped many of bags because i know they just won't work for me.

I'd love leather, it's not that practical for the Florida summer afternoon rains. It's why my birks were winter shoes and keens were summer shoes!

It's just the typical stereotyping going on.... it will slowly change right?

Maybe it is just me. Maybe I got up too early. Who knows?

I got this case. Originally meant for netbooks but the iPad fits *perfectly*. I'm not overstating that, it literally fits in there like the case was built for the iPad. It has another pocket for something else similarly sized (say, and Apple bluetooth keyboard, or in my case a notepad), and the outside pocket has a place for a couple pens (or one stylus and a pen), wallet, keys, charger, whatever...

Love it. :)

...

I also affectionately call it my "murse", I couldn't give a **** if I look "less manly" for carrying around a bag.

I got it in dark brown but for some reason the Fossil website only seems to be showing it in Navy blue - there was a third colour (tan I think) when I was looking about three weeks ago.

Looks really nice though and is a good snug fit - the inside is cusioned nicely (the back of the metal fastening studs are within the cusioning so won't scratch the screen or back of the iPad).

WOW! Very nice!!! Really. I like this...although it seems like it might be a LITTLE big for every day use, like when I am riding a bike for commuting to work, etc. as my Neoprene case BARELY fits by folding down the top edge. But, for the price I think I am going to pull the trigger on this one just to try out...less than $25 with free shipping. nice find.

I do have one question. When you say PERFECTLY...as you saying...the ipad with a grip or JUST the iPad only? Got a picture with you iPad stowed? I have an Incase Grip...which I really like to use around the house...well, really all the time. Currently I carry the iPad with GRIP in a neoprene case.

WOW! When I added the Targus case above to my cart, this came up: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002STX2ZG/ref=pd_luc_sbs_02_03 I think I like this a lot better than the targus because of hte open top vs the flap top. And it appears to have a more easily removed shoulder strap.

I have spent so much time shopping ebay, I had not bothered to try Amazon. I am going to keep shopping amazon for a bit.

Thanks, though, for sharing so others may benefit from them.

@ Dorkington and lokerd -- They look too much like computer laptop bags for me.

Aye! That is what I am thinking will be more MANLY! I just want it to have removable straps and NOT look like a purse.

So. So far, this is what I have the list down to:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001F192IE/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER ...a little large still...and 13.6 oz...almost a pound sucks!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001F7KXAO/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER ...a tiny bit larger than the above...still heavy. I like the strap convert. But I can't see IN the bag. Anybody have this? Is there a storage compartment inside? Is it soft?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0032GV0XK/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A2QHBM8MEN9W65 ...I like this but it definitely looks pretty thick. No specs given.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002R2EJSS/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER ...this one is looking pretty good. TINY bit shorter than what I have right now...but this one has straps...under 10 oz. Doesn't look like a purse.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002STX2ZG/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER ...I also really like this...but a tad bit bigger than what I got. Remember, I ride a bicycle frequently...and I am trying to get a slim case that fits the caboose of the bike.

Here are the ones on ebay that I had narrowed down before find the ones on Amazon:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140347413610&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT ...decent I think except forthe big flap...also a bit larger and more $ than the others.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260430335372&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT ...this is a tiny bit smaller than the one I have right now...which has been serving me very well...two pockets, one facing each way on the front which is a clever way to have a bigger pocket as each one overlaps with the other. Just no option for a strap. Handles are comfortable...and the neoprene case does a good job of protecting the pad...short of sitting on the thing.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270588629580&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT ...I have thought this was a good option, but I have not been able to get any details from the seller. Looks like it might be a little loose, large, etc. But, it is cheap...could get one just to try out.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180515893450&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT ...I actually like this one as maybe a #2 to one of my favs on Amazon...except...it opens ALL the way up. I think that spells DISASTER for the iPad in a check out lane, fumbling around trying to get a credit card out and the iPad hits the floor. Hmmm. NOT good!!

Well, I think that is it that I can find for now.

I ordered the Waterfield Design Ultimate Sleeve.

I think it looks very sleek. It's fitted for the ipad, it has a micro fiber face that cleans the ipad, it has rigid protection woven into the fabric and it doesnt look like a purse or a bag so to speak

http://sfbags.com/products/ipad-cases/images/sleevecase_leather_lg.jpg

For carrying just the iPad, I really like the Waterfield Ultimate. I have it with a shoulder strap. The feature that I really don't like, though, is the Velcro closure. It makes a lot of noise when opening. Not very stealth. I'd much prefer a nylon clip-type buckle. It's beautifully made, though.

Just got my Tom Bihn Ristretto for iPad. Liking it very much so far. Small enough to carry the iPad but also other goodies. I've only put in my Canon G11 and Sprint Overdrive in it and I have plenty of room to spare. Got it with the Absolute strap and it is very comfortable. Took off the waist straps for now.

It's a little pricey, but I'm happy I splurged on it. Much better than carrying my iPad around in a messenger bag.

Just get a leather flight bag, the iPad fit perfectly, no one will be any wiser as they don't scream laptop inside.

Plus they are well made and designed to last. Real Leather, brass buckles, but about $150 to $200 a bag, so its not cheap.

Personally i use it to carry more than just the iPad, its my daily bag.

WOW! Very nice!!! Really. I like this...although it seems like it might be a LITTLE big for every day use, like when I am riding a bike for commuting to work, etc. as my Neoprene case BARELY fits by folding down the top edge. But, for the price I think I am going to pull the trigger on this one just to try out...less than $25 with free shipping. nice find.

If you want to test the case out before buying, they can be found at Best Buy for $35.

This is a very inexpensive bag. I wanted as small a bag as possible and this one is just right in width and height to hold my iPad in a neoprene sleeve with enough room depth-wise to hold some other stuff. It's better made than I expected for the price, (I didn't have high expectations) and since I don't take my iPad out much it should last me quite awhile.

Being olive drab canvas it doesn't look girly at all.

My first thought after buying my iPad was to find a decent case for it. I ended up getting a Booq sleeve since that was the only thing available at the time here in Sweden where the iPad still hasn't even been released yet. Over the next few weeks I began searching online for a better alternative and decided to go with a Switcheasy Nude case. I also have an anti-fingerprint film on the screen. Anyway, to get to the point, I still wanted a nice classy bag to put my iPad in when carrying it around. I found my perfect case but unfortunately they don't ship outside the U.S./Canada. Still, I thought I'd at least share what I had found:

Ok guys. I am on a search for the ideal carry bag. But this is more than a search for the case...it is an image issue.

How are you carrying your case and avoiding looking too Geekish, girly, or whatever term may apply.

In other words, what is the best way to carry the iPad discreetly.

I use this military bag I bought off Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001JYB5L4/ref=oss_product

It doesn't look like a purse and holds my iPad inside of a Yoobao knock-off and then inside of a the iPad Neoprene sleeve perfectly. I figure that way if it starts raining, the neoprene sleeve should keep the ipad from getting wet.

I thought it was a nice leather plain looking option that someone male might like. If i was near a Levenger store i'd go check it out.... but for me i think i'm going to try to get the Muzzeto (sp??) for my birthday in November.

I hear you. I currently have two bags and the Muzzeto (in copper) on order.

I'm trying to convince the wife to let me try to order a custom bag (similar to the ones I attached above but in a different leather color), but she has put her foot down. The reason I say "try" is that the company is very selective in what Special Orders they grant since everything is hand made and they do not want to put their other products behind schedule.

I could easily see myself having a dozen bags by now if money was no object and the wife gives the thumbs up. :D

I've had one laptop backpack over the years and always felt it was not easy to get to things. Every messenger bag I have owned has been far easier to use.

Now with the iPad, getting it in and out of the messenger bag while standing in line is a piece of cake and I could not imagine using it as much as I do if I had it housed in a backpack.

Obviously, YMMV. ;)

I just got the Skooba Netbook Messenger (http://www.skoobadesign.com/product/netbook-ipad-messenger-81/) in the mail the other day (the red one). I really like it. It isnt so small that it looks feminine while wearing, and it is large enough to fit an iPad and fair amount of other stuf.

It has a pocket that fits a naked iPad perfectly, maybe even in the Apple Case (I dont know for sure, as I dont have one). I probably wont be using the specific pocket all that much, because Ill just be slipping on my iPad in my Waterfield Sleevecase, but it is good to know I dont need a Sleevecase every time.

It has a ton of pockets for small items, which is really nice. I bought it to take on a trip to a convention where I mostly will want my iPad and my advanced point and shoot camera, so it fits the bill perfectly for that.

What bag do you use?

What bag do you use?

I currently have a Bottega Veneta Woven Messenger Bag in gray (12w x 11h) and a Louis Vuitton Andrei in brown (11w x 11h). I probably prefer the Bottega Veneta one over the Louis Vuitton because the LV one is too structured. Both fit my iPad, Apple wireless keyboard, iPad dock, charging cable with wall Jack, P&S camera, wallet, business cards, car keys, and a couple pens without any issues.

I also have the Muzetto Personal in Copper on order and should have it middle of this month. I have a feeling that it will not be as roomy as my other two bags.

The bigger question is do you carry your murse's on either one of your shoulders straight down or do you carry it with the strap across your chest lol.

I'm a across the chest guy myself :D I'm 'one shoulder curious' on occasion but that's because I have to carry my kid in a hurry and can't do the across the chest move quickly.

9/10 times I carry mine cross body. The few times I have carried it on one shoulder was when I was just going into the house from the car.

This is funny. Since I carry a camera frequently, I am familiar with the carry of a bag..and normally carry across the chest. Pne thing nice with the across the chest, at least with the one I have linked to below, the strap can be long enough to allow the pad to be actually behind my arm and actually toward my back.

9/10 times I carry mine cross body. The few times I have carried it on one shoulder was when I was just going into the house from the car.

Actually, I didn't think I was going to like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002R2EJSS/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER but one thing I have decided I like is that the strap can be quickly adjusted from shoulder up close, to long shoulder, to across the chest. Or, it can be taken off completely. The front pocket is god for carry a bunch of stuff. The inside of the main comport, net is not as soft as I would like, but I can put something in there to help with that.

I know several have commented against a computer style bag, but for me, this is pretty ideal at least for the time being. It is less than $13...and gives me time to explore other options. But for running in and out of Lowes, Target, and other errands, it is good blend of desecrate...and it doesn't show up in the car under my seat on dark carpet, etc. if I do leave it behind. And, for basic eating out, like lunch at Jack in the Box, and even say a quick dinner out at a Mexican Resturant, this still works. Maybe for a nice dinner to Carrabbas, then it is too casual.

Definitely across chest is the more "Manly" way. It should look heavy duty not fashiony
Also your bag should have a wide strap.

Small/Medium sized backpack is much easier to carry, no strap going across body, can wear comfortably on one shoulder and never gets confused as a man bag/purse/murse.

True...but getting stuff in and out of a backpack is not easy. Backpacks are great if you are GOING to a location and want to unpack there...like you are going to the library to study. Backpack might work if you are going to go on a walkabout for the day, but I think getting in and out of the car, accessing your iPad from time to time, you still need something else.

My litmus test is this...I am standing in line at the return counter at Best Buy... one of the worst in town...and almost always a 10-20 minute wait just standing there...although Walmart was so long the other day, I left the line and went and shopped...came back and it was still a 20 minute wait (ok, I return/exchange a lot...sue me...but it could be the doctors office, or sitting outside a store while the wife shops, take your pick).

How easy can I whip out my iPad? It it is in the backpack...not so easy. If the bag has a flap over, still not as easy, at least not to jam it back in the bag. It has got to be easy to access...really easy to access.

I finally found a man bag that I like.

http://www.knomobags.com/row/men/bags/messenger/bungo.html

I have been using this bag for two weeks, one to work and now on holidays on a island. It's a great bag and I can carry all the stuff I need including camera, wallet, iPhone, keys, lunch, glasses etc and the iPad. I use my iPad naked but I've found a nice Cygnett slim sleeve that fits in the back pocket of the bag for added protection. This stays in the bag and I can whip the iPad out easily.

So far I'm very happy with the bag and I'm enjoying having everything with me.

I was in the Army for 26 years and had a map bag. Where the straps attached to the bag, vertically, on the sides, the sewing would always pull away from the bag. So I would be real interested in how your bag holds up.

The iPad fits perfectly in the big pocket and there is plenty of room for accessories in the others. Also, I can fit my dlsr (canon 40d, no grip, 28-70L 2.8 installed) in the middle and the iPad still fits in the front without the zipper shut (flap still closes perfectly).

The one I picked up is much darker than that shown and looks good with jeans or a collar.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001JYB5L4/ref=oss_product

It doesn't look like a purse and holds my iPad inside of a Yoobao knock-off and then inside of a the iPad Neoprene sleeve perfectly. I figure that way if it starts raining, the neoprene sleeve should keep the ipad from getting wet.

I got this military bag today. For the price I couldn't pass it up. It's going to be a good bag for when I go to places where I don't want my Muzetto bag standing out lol.

And, it's definitely going to be my Winter bag. I still have to get used to it because it doesn't keep its shape like the Muzetto since this bag is all canvas.

hard to describe-
but I'd like a strap that can go around and secure the ipad in the Apple case or in a small case, (like a ribbon around a present), and the strap has a very short carry strap connected that goes over the shoulder, but the ipad stays under my upper arm, not dangling lower.
hmmm, sounds like a purse!
most shoulder straps are way too long for what I want. and carry bags are too bulky.
anyone see a strap device like this? maybe at the S&M store!

A small, retractable strap on the apple case would be convenient. So I can hang it on a hook when washing my hands. If it were long enough you could wear like a purse if the need arises.

A small, retractable strap on the apple case would be convenient. So I can hang it on a hook when washing my hands. If it were long enough you could wear like a purse if the need arises.

Well, the one I ended up with has just that...an adjustable strap.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002R2EJSS/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

It can quickly convert from very long around the neck, a little shorter over the shoulder but down by the waist, or very short for just over the shoulder or for use with the carry handle all bundled up.

The strap can easily be removed and thrown in the front pocket along with my wallet and cell phone, camera kit adapter, vga out, pen and small pad of paper, earbuds, etc.

But, I have not needed to remove the straps because of the quick adjust and it adjusting down to quite short, it works out just right to just grab the handles and the strap flops down to the level of the bag and obscure.

Overall I have grown to really like the case. There is a LITTLE too much room in the main compartment...and it is not soft lined like I would like, it does not seem to rest too much on the ipad screen...and I have a soft chamois inside to put across the screen if I think it is going to rub a lot. I think this little inexpensive bag would work ideal with the Apple case when you want to not have to hold the iPad in your hands.

(anyone in San Diego?)

Murse it may be but it's one of the most stylish carrying bags you can get. I'm 6'4" and the amount of praise it gets when it's on my shoulder is astonishing - particularly from the women...

Iw as in for a surprise because I have a similar bag that I think highly of, but this one does indeed look great.

Important

Any body bags available that strap on your chest usually with velcro and have the bag on your bag tightly positioned with no dangling, used to have one, but I can't find anything good right now, this are super practical and comfortable because you don't even feel you carry anything. Unlike the godawful backpacks they have only one strip that fastens diagonally on the chest.

I have both the Tom Bihn Ristretto and the Waterfield Muzetto for the iPad. I always use the Ristretto. It's just way more functional and "manly" looking :) . The internal eyelets it has are perfect for adding small pouches from Tom Bihn to hold adapters and cords and such. I've been using this bag for 2 1/2 months and it's like new with no issues. Spend the extra $20 for the optional Absolute strap. Makes the strap on the Waterfield or any other bag I've ever used look pathetic by comparison.

Messenger style small camera bags work well, I find the Lowepro Terraclime quite comfortable with the iPad in.

hmmmm I keep debating between the two...would you say the Waterfield is less functional but more aesthetically pleasing? What color did you get for both?

The Tom Bihn is black exterior and wasabi (green) interior. The Waterfield is brown leather exterior with the black nylon inner flap.

The Waterfield is only "better" in that it's leather. I love the Waterfield sleeves and have several I've used for years. But the Muzetto really just isn't nearly as functional as the Ristretto.

I LOL'ed at the title of this thread. Are people really that anxious or maybe I'm just too ~European~. Anyway, I keep my iPad in a black/tan M-Edge Trip Jacket (which looks like a large notebook) which in turn goes into either my Fjallraven backpack or my Mulberry murse, neither of which have dedicated iPad/Laptop compartments. No issues as far as I can tell--the iPad is a pretty sturdy device. Unlike my laptop, I can comfortably carry my precious with me everywhere and I am loving it!

Seriously!

Love this one. Need to get matching holster for my Beretta! :)

Cheers,

Ok guys. I am on a search for the ideal carry bag. But this is more than a search for the case...it is an image issue.

How are you carrying your case and avoiding looking too Geekish, girly, or whatever term may apply?

In other words, what is the best way to carry the iPad discreetly.

Honestly, when I bought my STM Scout XS in early June (http://docgadget.blogspot.com/2010/06/stm-scout-xs-review.html), I only bring the bag and the iPad 3 times.

Also, I rarely bring along the iPad in the office meetings. It seems that it has become my primary Surfing device at home. It simply can't replace the pen and paper (http://docgadget.blogspot.com/2010/05/can-ipad-replace-yr-traditional-pen-and.html) (which I thought it could)....:D

...replace the pen and paper (which I thought it could)....:D

That is too bad. I am returning to staff in-service (teacher) and the iPad, especially, 3G, has been awesome. But I attended a conference over the summer...as well as carrying the iPad every where i go, including the work out gym where i have actually been reading a novel for the first time in 20+ years, and the iPad has been awesome in every regard.

But for the in-service for the past few days, i have been unusually pleased with the ipad. I have always carried my laptop previously, but admin is kind of funny about you pulling out your laptop...even if you are working on stuff related to the in-service. They would prefer people to use pad and paper.

But the ipad was MUCH more desecrate, quieter, and easier to get up and move about from place to place. Tomorrow, I am sure they will have us breaking up into small groups, playing games, etc. It has been difficult int the past to be productive with a laptop when they keep us moving around from place to place, but the iPad has been perfect.

One of the reasons I have especially liked the iPad for meetings, besides the low profile nature, is because of audionote. I start the recorder going, and when I hit return, it makes a line entry with a time stamp. When the lecture is over, I can go back, and when you tap on a line, it puts you back in that exact spot of the recording.

Pretty cool if you ask me. And then of course there is access to email, internet...and the words for friends game going on with others.

Cheers!

Saddleback bags are amazing!! I use their large briefcase as an everyday work bag, weekend getaway bag, beach bag, you name it. It has weight to it, but it's worth it because of the durability. Plus it's ridiculous how often I get compliments on it.

iPad can easily fit inside or in the back sleeve

Bought this Targus bag, £20, from Carphone Warehouse (UK) the other day. It's actually a generic 10" netbook bag, but fits an iPad with Apple case *perfectly*. It's water resistant, the inside is padded, there's absolutely no movement whatsoever, zipped or unzipped - seriously, it's like it was designed for the iPad with Apple case.

There's also a zip pocket on the front, can't fit much in it though. This suits me as I've been after a bag that's as small as possible purely for the iPad for a while. Might look a bit campy if you hold it round the front of the body, but I have the strap diagonally across my shoulder, bag round the back.

Edit: Can be found here for £14.32, dunno how reliable that site is though, never used it, nor am I in anyway endorsing it;

I'll bet it is made for the iPad, but if they use the iPad name, maybe they have to pay apple or something.

So, what is the inside like? You mention soft, but what is the material?

Is the pocket big enough for a cell phone, wallet, jump drive, camera connection kit and small card reader?

Anybody find it in the US? Actually, I think I have seen this at best buy and the puffiness made it to bulky...AND it was really tight with the belkin grip. Or maybe it is not the same because the tarsus one lie this said iPad, was kind of expensive and like I said, VERY tight as in hard to get it in and out. So maybe this 10.2" is just right. I just don't remember the pocket.

Yep, here it is...
Targus - Crave Slipcase for Apple® iPad™ - Black

Model:*TSS177US | SKU:*9889023

I wonder how much bigger the net book case is? The iPad one is 10.6/8.5. But it was too tight...and too puffy. The inside was definitely soft...a real asset...but I took mine back because it definitely was too tight...and the pocket was sideways.

"Carrying your iPad in public...a MANLY thread!" - even the title suggests that it's not very masculine to carry an iPad. Yes, it's feminine and yes, if a man carries a man-bag, many people think that they are homosexual. So what?!

Carry your large iPod Touch with pride - you or your parents worked for it hard (I hope) and just because you look like a girl, it doesn't mean that you are one.

No, you are a man. A MAN WITH AN IPAD!!!

(No, that doesn't really work, you still look gay. Personally, I don't mind. If you do, you should sort it out, because life will be so much easier after that.)

I bought a Booq Taipan slim XS in violet. I also have my iPad in a TUP case from Monoprice and it fits nicely in the bag. There is a neoprene pocket that the ipad slides into and it has a strap made from the same nylon that is used in seatbelts. The strap can be removed and there are two handles that pop out of the bag if you want to carry it like a briefcase.

Couldn't resist... I ordered a brown Journeyman bag from Copper River Bags this morning. Hopefully it will arrive a week or so after my iPad 2 (w/ orange smart cover).

Please do a full review when it comes. I am considering one for my ipad and stuff, but also sometimes to carry all my junk. Cant really get a feel for size from their pic.

What is the difference between the journeyman and the voyager? Is it just style? The site uses the same pics on both. Plus the dimensions are the same.

That is a Maxpedition Fatboy.

I would actually recommend a Monsoon. A little big but it definitely doesn't look like a purse.

These bags seem cool very well made IMO. They're made in the USA and a portion of their sales also go to charitable organizations!!!

http://copperriverbags.com/All%20Purpose%20Bags.html

Wow that is a nice looking bag. Looks like something my great great great great grandfather had when he was (hypothetically) a blacksmith and kept his tools in there and it got passed down from generation to generation. Sadly I have the same question as someone else did and what's the difference between the two? All I could tell is the voyager has holes in the straps that are on the flap and it has a false bottom to hide a passport or something--I guess if you're mugged and they just want what's in the bag and not the whole bag they wouldn't see it? I sent them an email to elaborate. They just seem too similar to me.

(edit)
Well I heard back from them. The only difference is the voyager has different front straps and a false bottom. Now that I know that I have no idea which I'm going to choose, but I think I'll be getting one of these, though.

(edit2)
I just bought the brown voyager bag. Says it could take up to two weeks to be made, which I guess is still faster than some shipping estimates on the ipad... I'll post a review if I remember in a couple weeks.

Today is 7-days after my initial order, so it may ship any day now... at this rate, it might beat my iPad 2 (still no movement on my order placed at 12:51am PST March 11).

I'll be sure to post some photos and write up something about it once it arrives.

+ 2 on the Waterfield sleeve. I really like these (leather bottom, flap, horizontal, strap (the works) ). I'm also happy they make these for just about every Apple device.

Actually , I have one of these already (for the ipad one) that I got off ebay , but it's vertical and doesn't have the strap, so I may get one with the strap. Don't know.

These cases are very masculine. The only 'more masculine' bag I could think of would be the Army Navy stuff , which is a good idea as it's cheap . Of course desert camo gets a bit tired in Wisconsin :D

$44.95

It's "new" in the sense it hasn't been used. but my bag was made in 82 (and smells like it) so I gotta work on that. But that aside it's real, nice and rugged leather. The snaps/clips are durable. It's not too big either. Going by the dimensions it should fit the iPad well but since I won't have my iPad till end of this week at the earliest, I won't know 100% until I get it. I'm not sure what I would put in the map portion yet but I'm sure I'll come up with something useful.

You really can't get more manly than a military map case.

Personally, I think it is a highly American mentality ( I am born and raised in the the US by US born and raised US citizens/parents, BTW). You go to many places in Europe and Asia and you will many men wear a bag to carry stuff. Heck, I love mine when I am with my boys and they hand me their electronics, I am not figuring out how I plan on carrying all this stuff.

I also like to carry a lot of stuff myself... iPad, BT keyboard, wallet, two cell phones (work and personal), business card holder, point and shoot camera, ... I th ink you get the idea. :D I used to always wear cargo sty le pants so I could keep all the crap in them, now I can wear whatever I want.

Heh I'm not the only one that has an ensemble of cargo pants for that reason. :) At a minimum my pants need to have that side pocket on the leg so I can put my phone there. That all changed when I started to get into photography and needed to carry all my photo stuff with me. Have several size bags for various amounts of stuff I want to take with me.

Not sure if anybody already mentioned it but I really like my STM "Pad Jacket". As a laptop bag it has just enough room for my iPad, stand, and glasses, and even my bluetooth keyboard sticking out the side pocket if I'm really pushing it. It also works as a sleeve if you take the strap off.

I bought my Fiance this bag for christmas and he loves it. He works for Boeing so its more professional than the backpack he was carrying before. He uses this bag for just about everything. He uses the main compartment for lunch and ping-pong stuff while his ipad fits in the little pouch in front of that compartment and he can still carry his MBPro in the back if he wants. When we go the mall or something he carries the iPad in its smart cover or before with the apple case when he had his first gen. He says real men carry their iPad by itself. He was just kidding I think.

Check it out, its a great bag. Anything Tumi made is really good quality material and made.

I of course use a purse that can carry my ipad, make-up, sunglasses + case, eye glasses + case and solution for contacts, wallet, iphone, gum, business cards + holder, ipad charger + usb cable... tums and sometimes Advil. Yeah, I am prepared. I love being a girl.

Not that my opinion matters but I'll just say it:

I too used to put more effort into finding the right case for my iDevices and Mac laptops. No longer.

I noticed that once the novelty and perception of newness of the item falls away from my mind, the feeling of necessity to have the "right" case falls away. In fact, I'm just as happy putting the iPad or whatever laptop I own at that time in a padded mailer and in my bag.

Just my few cents :)

I got the delivery confirmation on my voyager [copper river] bag on friday and was at my doorstep on monday...soaking in the rain. Glad they wrapped the bag in plastic before they put it in the box.

First impressions, not as big as I thought. The ipad slot is fairly snug with smart cover on so I doubt it would hold a book-type case in there. And for the main compartment my 13" macbook pro is a fairly snug fit. Was hoping I could fit my SRL in there as well but I'm not sure. Although I'm coming from a standard laptop bag that's very rigid so I may just need to get used to it. Not a fan of the shoulder strap--feels like a seat belt. Although I can look for a shoulder rest and solve that.

Aside from the shoulder strap everything else is pretty nice. Aside from the nylon shoulder strap everything is really thick leather. The lining is smooth but I thought it would be softer. Granted this is my first real leather bag so i'm probably just not used to it. I'll post another review / some pictures after a few days of use.

Have you considered getting a sev (http://www.scottevest.com/company/ipad.shtml)?

I actually picked up on one of the scottevest's the travel vest specifically. It looks like a regular vest and holds the iPad 2 with smart cover perfectly. On paper it seems like a super nerdy piece of clothing and if you're out announcing all the gadgets it holds then you're just asking for it.

If I'm out with the miss's I'd much rather rock the vest then the both of us sporting shoulder bags.

My Journeyman bag arrived as well late last week and my initial impressions pretty much mirror yours. The bag is smaller than I thought it would be. I was hoping to be able to fit a couple lenses in it along with my iPad. I knew it would be tight, but thought it would work. Now that I have the bag here, I don't think it is going to as it is just a little too small to fit my 70-200 or even my 24-105. I have also noticed that the leather is marking up my polyurethane smart cover pretty badly.

I was hoping to post some photos and write a more detailed review, but my bag also arrived with a broken rivet on one of the bottom corners, so I just finished packing it back up for the return trip so it can be repaired. I'm not too upset by this as it is a very nice bag (the leather is amazing) and the people at CRB stand behind their product, but it is an inconvenience.

I still plan on writing a review and posting photos as soon as it is returned, probably next week.

Did you get black or brown? I have the brown and noticed that on the bottom corners but they rubbed right off. I looked at it now and didn't really notice anything. Granted I've only been using it for a few days so far and I basically take the ipad out and leave it on my desk till I leave work at night, so it's not constantly going in and out of the bag.

I received numerous email from them reassuring me my bag would ship in a few days, the first one was 14 days before it actually shipped. I just got today the STM Scout XS/iPad bag, really like it so far. This is a keeper so far me for my iPad 2. On Sunday I bought the STM Alley bag for my MBA and traveling for my MBA 13" late model.

While I have lusted over the SF Bags offerings, the price and look of "expensive" had me concerned. I like the STM bags for the canvas. Had in the past camera bags that were canvas, and liked decorating them with souvenir pins from my travels. One to remind me of the fun I had in travel... but the other is that it made the bag look less like it had tech gear inside.

The other side is that canvas bags do look more "manly" over leather in the long run...

Yeah I think mine shipped 1 day shy of three weeks. Shipping itself was pretty fast. I got the notice on friday and was at my door on monday. The only confusion was two weeks later I got an email that essentially said the same thing as when I ordered that it could take 1-2 weeks. Apparently that was just a reminder but would have been nice to say at the top it's a courtesy reminder or something.

And yeah I do get a hint of that trying-to-be-funny-ism with the 100 year warranty. They really mention how it's 100 year warranty and when your grandkids return it make sure they know it's ONLY 100 years, etc.

Don't ever get a dSLR camera then. It's odd you're on this quest to find just the right size bag that carries what you need and then realize you need something bigger for certain times and other times you want something smaller. Think I have like 4 camera bags :)

If it does have a strap, it needs to look more like a laptop bag.

Yes that's the bag - thanks! Never heard of Tenba but I like what I see on their website. A photo/ipad bag may work for me.

I saw it in an apple ipad video: http://www.apple.com/ipad/business/profiles/medtronic/?sr=hotnews.rss
