Apple TV already has HDMI

obviously.

You missed my point, a lot of people already use a MacMini instead of :apple:tv does this now mean they'll EOL it?

Really? ;)

I think he is referring to the fact that both devices now have HDMI, so they are in some ways converging.

Your post is a bit confusing. Anyway, TV is 229$ while Mini is 699$, that should already mean something. TV has never been very popular and unless it gets a major update, it won't be. It's sad why Apple doesn't care about all its products :(

Where next is - AppleTV will get re-launched as an iOS appliance. It won't have any local storage, so you can only stream content from "the cloud" (iTunes/LaLa services), or perhaps from your home Media Center hosted on a new Mini.

Yeah, I think that's fairly accurate.

I'd love to see some sort of iTunes subscription service too.

I concur, but instead of a still under powered mini, get a quad core iMac to serve as your home computer / media hub to attach your drives to and serve your media to your iOS AppleTV's. You'll need the processing power of the iMac to encode the Blu Ray disks, etc.

The mini to me is a tweener. It is kinda over kill and over price for home theater and not enough for the main home computer.

I'd love to put a mini under every TV in the house, but at $700 a pop, the cost is prohibitive. A $100 AppleTV under every TV is just right.

You do not need anything more powerful than a Mini for home Media server. Steaming iTunes media to AppleTV clients requires very little processing power. Firewire port allows you to attach unlimited amount of external storage. 2.4Ghz C2D is fine for BluRay decoding as well.

I have a 2 year old Mini with 6+ TB of Storage hosting over 100+ encoded BD films, music and bunch of other stuff. Mini is absolutely perfect for this purpose, Quad-Core iMac is unnecessary.

I agree. Mini does the job fine, although encoding BR rips take awhile. Quad-core iMac is a whole new animal, it costs 2 grands!

I would build a PC if I needed an HTCP with a lot storage, just because I could have Blu-Ray drive internally along with several HDs. For 800, I could build myself a nice rig which would do gaming too. Mini would do the job fine though, I just find it to be overpriced as HTPC but it does the job and many other jobs very well

I think it'll be very similar in design to the new Mini, except a lot thinner and probably a much smaller footprint. :apple:tv logo will be in black on the unibody enclosure. It'll almost definitely run on an A4 and iOS4. The size will however be limited by what ports are on the rear, as you still need power, USB, ethernet, HDMI and optical audio. Analog audio would be nice but I don't think there's any need for component. Maybe the Mini and :apple:tv are swapping sizes and the new one will be 6.5" x 6.5".

I'm actually considering buying an :apple: Tv, but the idea that a new one could possibly be coming out (the current one seems quite old) makes me not want to - who wants to buying something that'll be outdated in a few months.

However having seen the new Mac Mini, it's kind of made me wonder if I should pay a bit (well, a fair bit more to be honest...) more. AFAIK, the Mac Mini can do most of what the Apple TV can, and a fair bit more... and I've heard of other people successfully doing this.

I'll post this one more time cause the other thread I put this in didn't seem to get noticed..

http://jobs.apple.com/index.ajs?BID=1&method=mExternal.showJob&RID=56168&CurrentPage=5

A recent job posting put on the site a few days ago. Apple TV team looking to hire multiple software engineers to work in a fast paced environment to deliver new features.

No idea if this is "routine" though in just providing the "usual" Software Updates - but what's wrong with adding some fuel to the rumour-machine :p

I think the question is that will it still have Component?

My old Sony LCD TV has Component (new at the time) and no HDMI. Has S-Video, Composite, and VGA as well.

My home theater projector has HDMI, but was a replacement for a model with no HDMI, so the wiring is only for Component, Composite, and S-Video (I don't feel like adding HDMI to the mix)...
