I want to give my 3GS to my brother in law in China

We are getting two iPhone 4s like practically everyone else here. 😀 So I want to give my 3GS to my wife's brother in China. I know virtually nothing about unlocking. Should I try and do it here on my computer? Or just wipe the phone clean, take out the SIM and let him figure it out in China. 😕 I have upgraded to 3.1.3 already.
 
From personal experience: try and do it before entering China.

I did my brother-in-law's 3G and while I know exactly how to do it, the most difficult part was getting the files as many sites were blocked. I thought it was just news and certain torrent sites but it was incredibly difficult sourcing the unlock software because of all the restrictions.

Seriously, save your wife's brother having a brick and do it outside of The Great Firewall.
