View Full Version : Why are so many 27' users against an update?

Have you ever noticed that when someone is asking for advice when to buy, that is is almost always the people who have an i7 27' iMac that tell them to buy now instead of waiting?

What's up with that? If you don't need them, WAIT. You will get a better machine for less most likely within the next month.

I am more than 100% sure there will be no update until late October. At least, not the high end models. I bought 27'' i5 3 days ago.

I haven't noticed that myself. No updates until August or Sept, IMO.

The high-end won't get a huge update, just marginally faster GPU. Only the quad core is a good buy now, other models should get a bigger update. You have no idea when it's coming. Might be next Tuesday or in October.

Waiting game is endless and sometimes unsatisfying.

Why would you buy along next update when Sandy Bridge and Southern Islands are coming couple months later?

And actually, even in October, if there is an update, it will be a minor one. I think the high end models won't be touched at all until Sandy Bridge.

You are so RIGHT! The right time to buy is NOW! In October, there will be Sandy Bridge not far away and you will simply have to wait there.

Because people who already own one, obviously feel it's worth buying and not waiting for a minor update, hence why they own one!

Pretty obvious answer here. If they just bought one and advised you to wait, that would be quite foolish no? People generally want to feel smart about their purchases, so of course they would argue that there is no point in waiting if THEY were "smart" enough to buy the current model. Simple stuff. ;)

How stupid are you! Jesus.

Really, you just called yourself stupid! There will be more reason to wait later by the end of the year. Sandy bridge is 32nm - that's already a new generation of CPUs.

Either buy now, or wait until Sandy Bridge. I personally recommend to wait until SB, if you don't need the iMac right now.

I should have the money for a 27" i7 in the next few weeks. If they've been updated by then, then fair enough, but if they havent then im not too bothered, im still going to go ahead and order. The i7 is a powerful computer and i cant see it becoming hugely outdated for quite a long time.
If i was buying a C2D on the other hand, then it might be a different story.

The sandybridges that would be targeted for iMacs won't go mainstream until q3-q4 of 2011.

You know this is a never-ending game.

You don't buy right away because you want to see if there is any issues, but then you don't want to buy too late because the next update is "right around the corner".

Buy it if you need it.

Very good point (as always) Hellhammer. The only reason why I'm waiting for the 27 inch refresh is to buy an i5 (hopefully) 27 inch iMac at the current price point of the 3.06 Ghz C2D. I know for certain that several weeks (or maybe days) after the refreshed iMac's come out you'll have people asking "should I wait for the Sandy Bridge-Southern Islands iMac?".

Life is not always a waiting game...

I saw a refurbished i5 for price of baseline core2duo 27 inch yesterday.

You know, a few years ago my TV broke and needed a new one. I got an HD 1080P TV, and thought, hey, I want to enjoy it to it's fullest, so I will get an HD DVD player! At the time it and Blu-Ray were neck in neck, and it was literally a coin-toss for me. Well, about 6 months later Blu-Ray won. Was I annoyed? Maybe a little. Did I regret buying an HD DVD player? ABSOLUTELY NOT! I was able to enjoy 1080P high-definition movies for 6 months on my new tv! I bought a Blu-Ray player shortly after. The point is, I could have waited to see who 'won' but there was no end in sight, and I would have missed out on all that HD awesomeness!!

iMac doesn't use Xeons... CPUs suitable for iMac will be available in H1 2011, only high-end chips come later (+6 cores).

i'd love to know where you get your information on the refresh timeframe.

the fact is that a lot of the bitching about the 27" iMac comes down to the quality of the gpu supposedly not being good enough for the resolutions it needs to drive. as an OWNER, who runs a 1920x1200 24" secondary monitor off the iMac, i've not once experienced this to be the case.

i'm not saying don't wait if you want to, i'm just saying the quality of the gpu shouldn't be a major factor. by all means wait, and at some point within the next 6 months there's sure to be a minor cpu and gpu update, but that's all it will be.

all this talk hoping for blu-ray, hdmi and usb 3.0 is ridiculous. i say with some confidence that those things will not happen, at least not in the next refresh, it's just not realistic.

Sure. But if you don't need that computer today, then you won't be needing it then either.

Computer purchases should always be based upon the REAL needs and budget that you have NOW, not on some fictive needs or science-fiction products.

The 27" Quad Core iMacs are already awesome machines right now and offer the best bang for the buck on the market. I've based my personal purchase decision on that simple fact. Of course you can wait for a refresh. But as I've already said, if you don't need the machin right now, you probably won't be needing it in a couple of months either.

If you don't need a machine today...then wait for the refresh that will happen in the next couple of months - July 13th or August 17th. If you need one - the refresh will probably be minor enough that buying before the refresh won't hurt you too much. As many others have said - major changes probably won't happen this year...more than likely next summer at WWDC 11.

The only reason I am waiting has to do with the horrible quality issue on the 27" iMac's this past spring. I opted to wait that out...and now have waited long enough (and don't "NEED" one yet) that I might as well wait for the refresh that is due. We got a 13.3" MacBook Pro to tide us over until the 27" iMac gets an update.

When you look at Apple's pattern for updates this summer you will notice that they have updated a Mac computer each of the last three months on the Tuesday that falls in the middle of the month. Using that logic I would expect the MacBook Air to get an update on July 13th and the iMac on August 17th...that is if I was a betting man...which I am not!

anyone think the 21' will be updated to quad core?

Right now the 27’ i5 refurbed is a good deal, but my first choice would be a 21’ not a 27’. But if the 21’ is going to stay c2d then I don’t think I need to wait for an update and could just pull the trigger on a refurbed today….

Quad core is unlikely due heat as current CPUs used in 21.5" are 65W while coolest quads are 82W and they are too expensive so Apple would have to use 95W. 21.5" will likely get an update to Clarkdale which is dual core but supports four threads (Hyper-Threading) and has pretty high clock speed too and is based on Nehalem architecture.

Jesus has come forth and stated my children that Intel already has 32nm processors out there is a strange world called PC/Linux land.

These goodies should have been incorporated into the 27in iMAC model ASAP, but alas Jesus's black-shrouded enemy with a red symbol is trying to milk the Mac fans for all the money they have first.

My PC blew up last week, 6 years old, I think I lost the north bridge. :(

I need a new machine, ASAP. Thought about building a custom PC (Hackintosh), but am leaning more towards the i7. A lot more expensive, but with the gorgeous display, I figured I should just go for it.

Working side jobs, to bring in some extra cash.

Where do you get that information? You don't even know whether Apple is going to update next week and you write you know about what will happen in q3 of 2011?

Stop misinforming people!

No I just confused the high-end sandybridges (the 6 core non server variant) due to release in q3 2011 for the mainstream desktop sandybridges due to release in q1 2011. That is all.
