You mean erase the hard drive and install Panther from CD?

- Insert CD, and restart the PowerBook holding down the < C > key (forces booting from a CD)
- When it is finihed booting, click CONTINUE
- After clicking another 3 times on CONTINUE orso, (and AGREE)... select the partition (or drive) on which you want to install Panther, and click on OPTIONS...
- Select "Erase and Install" (use journaled), and you're off.

It's just a matter of booting from the CD and let the installer guide you.

does the booting process take a long time to do?

Oops! I suddenly realized that your PowerBok does niet have built-in USB ports.

Requirements:
Macintosh computer with PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor; built-in USB; and 128MB of physical RAM.

XPostFacto (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11168) is a utility that lets you install Panther on unsupported Macs like these.
Hope it works for you!
