Thinking of putting 4.0 on my 3GS but I'm also selling my phone next week (Jailbroken 3.1.3) - so want to make sure I can revert back to the old OS.

Anyone have success in downgrading back to 3.1.3 from 4.0?

Why if you plan to restore next week. Plus 4.0 will update the baseband which doesn't revert or downgrade.
downgrade by putting iphone into recovery mode and pressing alt+click and clicking 3.1.3 then when u get error 1015 just use a program called recboot to kick ur phone off recovery mode and voila u have 3.1.3 i just did it 2 days ago i ddnt like 4.0
