Robertson: I warned Bush on Iraq casualties

President's response: 'We're not going to have any'

Wednesday, October 20, 2004 Posted: 11:32 AM EDT (1532 GMT)

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The founder of the U.S. Christian Coalition said Tuesday he told President George W. Bush before the invasion of Iraq that he should prepare Americans for the likelihood of casualties, but the president told him, "We're not going to have any casualties."

Pat Robertson, an ardent Bush supporter, said he had that conversation with the president in Nashville, Tennessee, before the March 2003 invasion U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. He described Bush in the meeting as "the most self-assured man I've ever met in my life."

"You remember Mark Twain said, 'He looks like a contented Christian with four aces.' I mean he was just sitting there like, 'I'm on top of the world,' " Robertson said on the CNN show, "Paula Zahn Now."

"And I warned him about this war. I had deep misgivings about this war, deep misgivings. And I was trying to say, 'Mr. President, you had better prepare the American people for casualties.' "

Robertson said the president then told him, "Oh, no, we're not going to have any casualties."

The White House has made no reaction to Robertson's comments.

Even as Robertson criticized Bush for downplaying the potential dangers of the Iraq war, he heaped praise on Bush, saying he believes the president will win the election and that "the blessing of heaven is on Bush."

"Even if he stumbles and messes up -- and he's had his share of stumbles and gaffes -- I just think God's blessing is on him," Robertson said.

The fact that Pat Robertson is quoting Mark Twain regarding Bush, is almost as scary as Bush trying to quote God. Twain always seemed to be against people like them. Definitely rolling in his grave right about now. If Kerry wins, does that mean God is unhappy with what Bush has done with his gift? If Bush wins, is God trying to punish us for our stupidity?

I cannot believe Bush thought we would have no casualties. I take that back... I totally believe it. And that's just sad. What a clueless sycophant.

No story like this would be complete without the FOX pro-Bush spin,

FOX News Live anchor David Asman erroneously "correct[ed]" Newsweek investigative correspondent Michael Isikoff's accurate reference to Christian Coalition of America founder Reverend Pat Robertson's October 19 comment that President George W. Bush told him "we're not going to have any casualties" in Iraq.

On the October 21 edition of FOX News Live, Isikoff referred to Robertson's "striking" comment "that President Bush had assured him there wouldn't be any casualties, prior to the Iraq war." Asman quickly followed up, "I gotta correct you for a second, Michael; he didn't say there wouldn't be any casualties. Pat Robertson was saying there'd be a lot more than he expected there to be."
