VPN issues w/ app store and iTunes

Hey all,
Something I've noticed (on my home network at least) anytime my VPN is on I am unable to access the app store or iTunes. Safari works fine and so does everthing else as far as I can tell. Any ideas why this happens or ways to fix it. Thanks.
