I'll be there for my sins...32GB model tentatively 'reserved'

I don't really want to be there before 7:45.....so I guess that'll put me at the back of the line lol

that's good to know - i have a fear that they have taken too many reserved orders and not enough stock so will be first come first serve for the reserved iphones too.
i'm in the same situation, going crazy without it - although this long lasting battery life of my current nokia 2323 has me shocked! think i've been used to the iphone battery for far too long......

I've been scouring another forum (with AV in it's name) and many people have posted that Apple stores will have micro SIMs available. However going to an O2 shop on Monday might be better as it'll be set up and ready for Thursday.

I've a 16GB reserved - obviously it's black but I wanted white! Unless I hear worrying information beforehand I won't be picking it up until after work, so some time between 5 and 6 in the p.m. I'm going to concerts on Tuesday and Wednesday next week so probably won't be fit for a very early drive up the A8 to Belshaft.

Hi folks.

I work in town anyway so heading to Victoria Square aint a big issue for me. But i havent preordered anything as i'm hoping to get a 32gig black iPhone 4 on Orange. Do you reckon that should be a problem? Or will they only have sim free stock on release day? Or do you reckon i'd be better heading to one of the Orange shops in town and waiting there for the shop to open?

Surprised to see that there is that many others from Belfast on here....good to see!

Best thing to do is ring the store on Wednesday and ask!

Just off the phone to Orange and the girl on the phone said she doesnt know if the stores will have stock on Thursday. But that i would get a text as long as i have registered online telling me how to get one. She said they still dont know if they are going to allow preorders before Thurs yet.

Ok so I really want a sim free on launch day, but 1) I haven't reserved and 2) I want a white one. So I could be screwed.

Gonna wait and see if there's any news closer to the time re: availability:confused:

32gb black. the only choice!

A few questions - where's the best place to park? Is there a carpark in the centre itself?

Secondly, I'm coming from ROI. Paid a visit to an 02 republic of ireland shop today and was told that they can't port my number over to a microSIM!? The microSIM's that they have are for iPads only (I know - rubbish). I'm going to go at my SIM with a pair of scissors, but just wondering would anybody heading down Thursday morning have one of those SIM cutters? If they did that would save a lot of hassle - I'd be eternally grateful!

You can park in the Victoria Square car park below the Apple store!
Word is you get a micro SIM at the Apple store....not sure how it works with O2 Ireland but can't imagine it being any different! ( worst case you can take a walk round to the O2 shop 200m away and see if they'll give you one )

A sim free iPhone 4 will certainly not be coming with a microsim, and an O2 UK microsim will not work with an O2 IE account.

Vodafone changed their microsim policy yesterday and microsims are available in all VF stores from Monday for any type of account, so I'll be getting one then in preparation for Thursday. Maybe O2 will see the light as well! ;)

Oh and I haven't decided when to turn up to the store yet, I've got a reservation so no rush I guess, but I'm tempted to turn up just before the opening.

Cheers. Anybody tried ringing the Apple Store and seeing what their policy is going to be with SIM cards on Thursday? Would be very surprised if they can port your existing SIM onto Micro SIM in the store.

I'm heading up for 7.30am. It would really piss me off if I turned up at 7pm to be told they were all gone (even though I've pre-ordered). That would mean no iPhone 4 until August most likely. Fingers crossed everything goes to plan - including the Micro SIM debacle. Who'd have thought we'd be discussing SIM cards on a mac rumors forum!? Very 1998 altogether - how many contacts can your SIM card hold??

Yeah, like i said it's my mum who has the contract, i'm just pay and go,

but i know she pays on the £70 per month one, but somehow she still pays around 120 a month, which makes her a platinum member so she can get better phones and 6 months early upgrade.

I'm wondering what the situation is with the white?
I've been told o2 will have iPhones in stock on the 24th, and i'm wondering if they've been given a certain amount of white ones, or are the white ones just a no go everywhere at the minute?

if my local o2 had a white one in, then i'd have no problem, but i doubt they will have any iPhones (white or black) in on the 24th.

Any thoughts?

Has anyone who pre-registered with o2 got a microSIM yet?

They had suggested that they might send them out in advance of the phone appearing but despite all manner of useless emails from the o2 "gurus" there has been no mention of whether they have started to send SIMs out.

In the initial registration, they had certainly said that they weren't guaranteeing SIMs would be sent but it would be nice to know what they are doing. More particularly, I would love to know whether I will have to go a-SIM hunting this week.

Has anyone here been at the Victoria Square store before for a product launch. Are they usually large queues like other Apple stores?

How do they work it?
Do you queue up outside the shopping centre or do they open up to let people queue outside the apple store?
Whats the earliest the queue has started to form?

I've tried to contact the store to confirm sim free stock of the iPhone 4 but they have not been able to confirm that for me yet?

I guess this year will be different though with the early contract buyouts and the leap in technology

Though the temptation to go early is very great - I only live 5 mins drive away (in quiet traffic).

Considering the same thing myself....but I'm like a big kid who needs it NOW!

To boot, I'm just off the phone with a friend whos travelling and wont be back until Friday...she said shes just off the phone with the store and they'll let me pick up her reservation if i have her confirmation eMail with me

Didnt get his name but dear knows what the odds on that happening are!!

I'd likely fall asleep and lose my place in the queue - would wake up at closing time on Thurs eve! Going to Pearl Jam tonight so will be pretty tired anyway tomorrow morning. Looking forward to hearing stories of ye all going on the lash then queuing!

So with one day to go - what package is everyone getting? I don't have a phone contract at the moment and am still at a complete loss what to get:

Option 1: Vodafone - the 1gb data cap tempts me plus the wife is on vodafone and I believe you get free calls to other vodafone users. However a number of people have now told me that o2's 3G reception is much better here in norn ireland.

Option 2: o2 for the reason mentioned above. Plus they seem to be very much on the ball with regards to micro-sims etc. And I hear they have great customer service.

Option 3: Splash out on sim free and try o2 simplicity for a month - if I use more than 500mb then switch to vodafone.

Any advice would be appreciated cause I just can't decide - not bothered about number of minutes and texts etc.

I work for 3, so Im on them, and im on o2 with my iPhone 3G... And to be honest, Im lucky to get 3G on o2 anywhere in Northern Ireland, and EVERYWHERE I go I get full 3G and HSDPA on my Three contract.

So dependant on Threes deals announced today, I might just cancel my o2 contract and go with three.

That map you put up is an amazing signal strength, You would be getting download speeds around there of anything up to 7.2mb/s

Vodafone are terrible.

Nope I dont work in Vic Sq Three.

Honestly, most of the problems with network connection on three are weak antennas inside the phones, the network esp in belfast is outstanding. I was seeing download speeds on my Mobile Broadband dongle as fast as 6mb - I can only get 2mb thru my landland lol

Three has a really bad network preception, however, the network is actually bloody good. Why not get a Pay & Go sim and try it out, you will be seriously surprised.

Ive had my contract with o2 for about 6 years, so ive been with them a long time.

I already have a Three contract also. Im purchasing my iphone 4 outright so as I can just put my three sim in it for the time being until they announce their iphone4 tariffs.

You can just pick up any normal sim and cut it down to micro sim size, it will work fine as this is what i did for my ipad.

Ahh, thanks for calling ErmiCat. I wonder when they'll have them back in stock! Interestingly Tesco has released their plans today, PAYG for £479, and with staff discount that brings it down to around £430. Well folks! I got one!!!! 32GB BABY!!! Woohoo!!!!!!

I was done and dusted and outta the store at 8.02am.

I turned up to the orange store at Victoria Square in Corn Market at 5am and was first in the queue. There ended up only being about 15 of us by the time i left. But they only had 10 phones...and only 1 32gb!!!!! (which i got). Few disappointed people hoping for 32's which had to settle for 16's...but they still were happy enough to get a 16.

At 5am there was about 10people outside the O2 store, and about 150-200 when i walked past at 8am.

Didnt see the apple store but apparently there were about 50-60people at 5.30am (including a lot of overnighters)...and two massive queues gowing right over the bridge at about 8am.

Good luck to everyone hoping to get one!!!

Ok I queued overnight in the Walk In line to get my phone this morning. Anyway when I was buying my beautiful 32GB unlocked baby I asked about the number of reservations and the stock level. Funny you should say this, an Apple employee just walked along the reservations line making a statement, he was saying "there has been some misinformation around, there ARE enough phones for everyone with a reservation". However, they are only letting 1 person into the store without a reservation for every 10 entering with a reservation.

JonnyIreland I mustn't have been too far behind you in the queue as I recognised the guy with red rucksack from your photo earlier.
Took me 3.5 hours queuing - did it take you longer? Anyone else I'd say expect a 2-3 hour wait - bring food, drink and something do e.g. a book or angry birds.

How are the queues looking down there now?

I agree. And there were rumours aplenty, that's for sure. What a crazy day, I can't say that I enjoyed the experience, it's back to preordering for home delivery for me. I JUST this moment got home -total trip time for an iPhone = 12 hours. I'm actually too tired to play with my new toy for now.

Hey,

I arrived at Victoria Square this morning at 7am to find roughly 30 people in front of me in the reservations queue.

By 7.30am the queue had already doubled and kept growing right up to opening time so I think I timed it nicely...

Finally got into the Store at 9.15 and left at 9.45 after upgrading on o2...

A thoroughly enjoyable experience and the Apple Staff in Victoria Square were fantastic! Thanks guys for all your help today, it was awesome!

Got it ;D

Arrived at 10am, last of the line for a while... Wasn't out until after 2pm. Was definitely worth it though, thought I would've got loads of looks for being 15, but the workers were really friendly. :)

Apparently things speeded up after 9.00 pm when the networks were no longer handling contract upgrades, etc., but those with reservations were given a ticket to come back the next day, or even later, to get their phone and contract. My wife got mine at about 9.30 after a two and a half hour wait. But she had nothing but praise for the staff at the store who were helpful and friendly and even provided coffee and water for those queuing.

Yeah, I just want to say that although I didn't enjoy yesterday too much, all the Apple Store employees were amazing and definitely deserve a mention. It must have been such a long and crazy (& repetitive!) day for them, so well done to any of the staff if they read this -you all did great, so thank you! :D

I hope everyone who was hoping to get their iphone yesterday got one. I have to agree the staff were great I really enjoyed the whole experience.

Has anyone got to try out Facetime yet. It's the only thing I have been able test yet. So if someone wants to give it a spin let me know.

Also I notice that I can now sync my hi-def apple TV movies to my iphone. Cool. Don't know if it will play to the tv through the AV leads as I haven't tried it yet but I imagine it will.

After 2 failed attempts at getting an iPhone 4 yesterday I thought I'd give it one more go. So I went back to the apple store at 730am this morning. Was 6th in line, got in at 9am and was out by 910. Then went straight to vodafone who activated my microsim and I was using my iPhone 4.

Yesterday was quite stressful but today went so smoothly. I think next time I'll wait to the day after launch. I'm so happy with my iPhone though, it was worth the wait.

What are people in the south doing for Microsims. I just cut mine down to size. Has anyone been able to get an official one?

Have any of you lot had the reception problem? The signal gets quite low if I grasp it tightly, but if I hold it the way I normally would then it's fine.

But in saying that I'd hate to think that I spent £500 on something that's faulty, and not an issue common to many phones, including the previous iPhones, which has been suggested. I wonder if it has been an issue with the previous iPhones, but we're only noticing it now because they made a big deal about the new antenna?

I think I'll wait for a week or so to see what Apple has to say (assuming they have more to say than "you're holding it wrong"...), before making any decisions

To the person above, you are holding it wrong.
That's what I've heard, anyway.

You see, the left side is the antenna for carrier network and all, so if you grasp it tightly the network will slowly disappear. I only have this problem if I hold the phone in my left hand, tightly but when I hold it 'normally' it's fine.

Yes was pretty annoyed by this. I am right handed but I hold the phone in my left hand - especially when holding it in front of me for internet surfing etc.
However I have noticed that the issue varies depending on location. For example I can easily re-create at home but I couldn't re-create it in the office today.
I even noticed that it would lose the signal when in my pocket - I'd take it out and no bars but they would quickly start re-appearing... useless!

Being the sucker that I am I splashed out on the official apple bumper today (it's supposed to resolve the issue) - will test properly again tonight.

Yep, I got a Vodafone MicroSIM on Wednesday and when I was getting near the front of the line yesterday morning I just got them to change my account over to it so by the time I had my iPhone4 in hand, the microsim was active! :D

Where did you get the bumper? I tried the Apple store yesterday and they were sold out?

Sorry- got it in the apple store Friday lunchtime. Having spent a couple of days with it on my new iPhone I'm actually pretty happy with it. Apart from fixing the reception issue (which apparently will be resolved by an OS update early next week anyway) it gives the phone a much more comfortable and sturdy feeling in your hands.
However warning- some headphones and 3.5mm jacks won't fit with the bumper attached and the same goes for unofficial USB/charger cables. Pretty annoying but I definitely don't regret the purchase.

Apple are releasing a software update soon :)

Dear iPhone 4 Users,

The iPhone 4 has been the most successful product launch in Appleís history. It has been judged by reviewers around the world to be the best smartphone ever, and users have told us that they love it. So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them. Here is what we have learned.

To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.

At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this?

We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.

Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they donít know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.

To fix this, we are adopting AT&Tís recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhoneís bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.

We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the sameó the iPhone 4ís wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologise for any anxiety we may have caused.

As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.

We hope you love the iPhone 4 as much as we do.

Thank you for your patience and support.

Does anyone else from this thread have the problem where your phone completely loses it's signal when in your pocket (I have the bumper)?
When I take my phone out of my jeans it nearly always has the network lost message - however I seem to have bars on my signal indicator. So it's as if the signal is only completely lost for a short period and then it resumes.

Maybe not a big deal you might say but I use the TunedIn App to listen to digital radio when on the move and you soon realise that the signal disappears after a few minutes in the pocket.

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this - particularly anyone in Belfast on O2.

I'm on Vodafone in Lisburn and I am constantly getting that "no cellular data" message even though I have full signal.

It's particularly annoying when I'm typing a message and it stops me typing. I wish I could turn off that warning somehow because I never have trouble sending or receiving messages.

I've got data settings on but I only turn 3G on when I need it to save battery.

Has anyone else noticed that the iPhone 4 is completely useless in 2G? I used to be able to use safari and Facebook on my 3GS while on 2G but now it won't even load. A bit annoying if I just want to check something quickly.
