Two years ago when I bought my 3G the main door 2nd level by Macy's I think was open and they had a line set up. I was thinking of trying to get there by 7 but maybe I'll come earlier.

If you read the fine print in that email, even if you reserved one, they dont guarantee it.
2 years ago they had lines outside at least 3 of the entrances. It was orderly and well organized.

I spoke to two different people at the menlo store and have called apple customer support and everyone i spoke to told me it doesn't matter what time i go on the 24th to pick up my phone; it will be held for me on Thursday until i pick it up.

Thats really good to hear. Since i need to be at work at 9AM, ill still get there early.
I guess they need that fine print to prevent getting sued or whatever.
If you didnt preorder one, i'd get there are early as possible.

For the 3G i was the 10th person in line at the entrance on the deck by the movie theater. I got there around 6:15. They made us wait outside the mall until about 15 minutes until opening. Like I said, everything was orderly and they brought out snacks and water to everyone on the line once we were inside. (It was weird walking in the empty mall) They activated my phone really quickly and I was out of there within 10 minutes. I remember that day about 20 minutes after I got out that AT&T shut down and Apple servers were shot. Last year that didn't happen mainly because they didnt sell nearly as many 3Gs's at launch and if I remember correctly iPhone OS2 came out and Mobile Me was released on the same day as the 3G.
I really have no idea what to expect this year. It depends on the servers, which im sure are being upgraded now to meet demand. I already told my boss to not be surprised if I don't show up until after 10 or to be an hour early.
It could go really well, or it could go really bad. I love camping out and getting up early for launches.

I'm really excited about getting the iPhone 4, but really worried that I won't get one because I couldn't pre-order :( I was trying to pre-order the phone, but as we all know, all sites were a mess that day.
But anyway, where do people usually wait in line to get in the mall? There are many entrances, but I was just wondering if anyone knew where doors were open so we could stand in line by the Apple Store. Or if we have to stand in line outside. I was thinking second level parking deck by Champps, what they call the "food court" parking. That's usually where I park to go to the Apple Store.
Can't wait!

So I wasn't able to preorder it but I'd still like to line up early on launch day.
Is it better to line up for the Apple store or the ATT store right across?
Is the mall entrance on the 2nd floor? It seems like some people would get screwed due to multiple entrances if they open them at different times.
In the grand scheme of things, what kind of shipment should we expect relative to other stores. Would Menlo Park mall be considered a major apple retailer?

I would assume that Menlo Park is a major Apple retailer. There's no other Apple Stores in central Jersey except for Freehold, and Bridgewater, to my knowledge. So Menlo Park is a pretty popular Apple Store and I'm hoping they have a large shipment!
But still wondering which entrance to go to! :D

For the 3G release 2 years ago, we lined up in hallway across from the AT&T store. They put a line for AT&T on the left, and the Apple store on the right.
The problem I had was that many people who were there early, were sent away by mall security. So the people waiting longest weren't necessarily at the front of the line. Plus with people coming from different entrances, I would argue that it wasn't well organized at all. Once they let us into the mall it was fine.
Does anyone know if mall security lightened up for the 3GS or iPad launches? Or were they still giving people a hard time about lining up early?
Dragula22
Jun 21, 2010, 12:50 PM
gaaaaaaah, that sounds potentially nerve wracking.
I'd hate to line up early only to find out other people have from another entrance have gotten in first.
I don't even understand how that happens since I assume a line forms at ONE entrance of the mall. Do people just risk standing alone at a different entrance hoping to be let in first?
Do you remember how ATT line compared to the Apple line?
robtraut
Jun 21, 2010, 12:58 PM
There's 2 entrances fairly close to the Apple store, the "Food Court Parking" entrance on one side, and the movie theater entrance on the other. The movie theater is a little further away.
The AT&T line was a little shorter, but both lines were out the door. I'm also curious where the extra line for people with reservations will go.

I was at the line for the 3G. Security didn't want anyone on the property until 7am. I went home, ate breakfast, came back for 6:30am and most people were in their cars. At about 10 minutes to 7am, everyone started rushing to the door (the only door they let us in was next to the Food Court entrance, right in front of the ramp.)
So, now that they are going to open at 7am, I'd hope they'd be letting us on line at 6am.
PS: I was there for a Personal Training this morning, saw the CocaCola guy bringing in a ton of bottled water.

That's the entrance that I would think would be the main one. That entrance is the closest one to the Apple store. The next closest one would be the movie theatre parking.

I just sent Menlo Mall this question.
As you may know there is a HUGE Apple product launch happening this Thursday June 24th. There will be people getting there early to wait in line. I am guessing that the 2nd floor entrance by Brookstone is going to be the place where people are going to be able to line up before the store opens. I plan on getting there before the Mall opens to wait in line. If I am patiently waiting in line I wont be run of the property will I? Can you please confirm this with me? THanks so much.
Here is the response I got from them.
The mall doors will be open at 7am. You will not be allowed to stand outside the doors early in the morning waiting to get in.
Why not? What is the big deal?
robtraut
Jun 21, 2010, 04:05 PM
Yes, that's the entrance where the line formed, and that hallway between the suit store and Brookstone is where they lined us up once we were let into the mall.
The signs for that parking deck say "Food Court Parking."
The last time I tried to line up was 2 years ago for the 3G release. I was really hoping someone who went to either the 3Gs or iPad launches could say if they were allowed to line up without being hassled by security.

Great idea e-mailing Menlo Mall! Although this e-mail is helpful, it's also disappointing :(
Why can't we stand in line outside?! That's ridiculous, and it kills my plans for that morning. Can we wait in our cars before doors open? Or are we not allowed on the property at all?

Everyone should email them saying that a line needs to be formed outside that entrance.
I mean come on, do they expect a MAD dash to the Apple store at 7am from everyone sitting in their cars? If anything I would think a line would be the safest most fair way to do it.

I agree. It's actually more safe to have a line formed in an orderly fashion than to have a massive amount of people dash for the door at 7AM. I suggest everyone e-mail them too. I'm going to.

I sent them this e-mail:
"Hello, I just had a general concern about this Thursday, June 24th.
As you may know, this Thursday, June 24th 2010 is the release of the iPhone 4, and many people will be coming early in the morning to the Apple Store. As I understand, doors open at 7AM. I was informed that Menlo mall will not allow customers to line up outside the door (probably the Food Court Parking deck) on the morning of June 24th. I was inquiring as to why we cannot line up outside the door in an orderly fashion early the morning. I think it's the safest way, and fairest way to handle iPhone 4 sales that morning. In my opinion I think that having a nice line outside the mall entrance is better than having a massive amount of people rushing for the door at 7AM. If you can give me any information, or ways to wait in line for the iPhone 4, I'd really appreciate it."
Hopefully we get some answers!

On Sunday I went to the Apple Store to ask about that weird situation. I was wondering the same thing because my father's name is on the account, and I know in the past he had to be there in order to purchase/change anything. One of the Apple guys said that as long as you're a registered user, you can purchase the iPhone 4. So we went to AT&T (which is conviently right across Apple) and he made me an authorized user. *Make sure you print out your confirmation email from apple if you preordered
*Bring a government issued ID.
*The apple employees still do not know how mall security is going to handle people waiting otuside before the mall opens.
*They also do not know what time the mall doors will open, but assured me the store will open at 7 am.

The dude responded to me right away. Him not responding is not good news. Hopefully he is not ignoring this. If I get there early and am just turned away that will not be fair at all. Maybe it is better just to go to 5th Ave NYC since it is their "Flagship" store and they are open 24/7. They will have a line for sure. heres my history there.
Iphone 2g (original) launch-
Got there about 3-4 am iirc and i was #6 in line. The line was outside then was moved inside along the glass banister. We call sat on the floor until 9am until they started to let us in the store. This launch went pretty well and was smooth.
Now onto the bad story. Iphone 3g launch
I went to the mall the night before at about 11pm. I was #1 in line and also met up with a friend there who i had met the previous year from the 2g launch. We were there maybe for 1 hr until the old fat bald security guard.
We waited across the street at good year since we can tell from there if and when people start to show up. We ended up going up the ramp to the second floor around 7am and we didnt see anyone until we realized they were all hiding in the stairwell in the parking garage. we ended up being real far back in the line when we really were there the night before and were first on line. After that incident i would rather stay away from there on launch days.

No I do not work at the Mall, but I do visit frequently as I live less than 5 minutes away (was just there for breakfast :p).
But based on the 3G launch, the line for both AT&T and Apple will start on opposite sides of the glass railings, and end right before you can turn right.
Based on past lines i've been in at Apple Stores (iPhone 3G at Menlo, Upper West Side grand opening), they will have employees giving out free water and attempting to answer questions you may have. There may be Starbucks employees handing out coffee and baked goods. I forgot if they did that for the 3G, but Apple has done that for many other events in the past.
Also, I don't think they will let you in any door other than the one by Brookstone, that has been described by others in this thread.
If they do it like they did the iPad, there will be a separate line for Reservations and Walk-Ins. And they do not take every single reservation before doing a single walk-in.

Does anyone have any idea how many they might carry? If Best Buy in Woodbridge is going to have 50-100 (according to iClarified) then I can't imagine an Apple store having any less.
I'm just concerned that if I get there at 5 or 6am and I'm 70th in line... I don't want to be worried that I may not get one. Has anyone experienced something like this in the past or know someone who was 100th in line but still got a phone?
Also, are we limited to 1 phone per customer or 2? I've been reading both. I imagine if we were allowed to buy 2, the second customer (in this case my wife) would have to be there... and she will never get up to wait in line with me @5am even if they were handing out gold bullion!!!
Any insight is greatly appreciated! Thx!

Apple, historically, has had exponentially more iPhones than AT&T, and likely the same for Best Buy. They should have enough for everyone who reserved. As for walk-ins, I have no idea how many they will have and neither does anyone I've talked to. Walk-ins will be first come, first serve.
And I do not know the answer to your second question, but i saw this on the Apple online store, Pick up your first iPhone at an Apple Retail Store and an Apple Retail associate can help you purchase additional iPhones. But that may just be for people who Reserve, as it was on the page before you could click reserve.

LOL, you must have been in that mob I described on this post (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=10184928&postcount=10). Sorry, I sort of lucked out parking downstairs instead of leaving the premises entirely. What's even funnier at all of our expense is that Apple still had stock by the end of the day and the line was near empty.
I'm planning to be there with my two 16GB reservations. Anyone looking to get a 16GB want to help me get a 32GB? I'm planning to be there with my two 16GB reservations. Anyone looking to get a 16GB want to help me get a 32GB? Hey BeyondtheTech, I'm willing to do this with you. I can't PM for some reason. I'm a "walk-in" buyer so as long as they allow me to buy two phones I'll hook you up.

I think you can only buy 2 phones if you have 2 AT&T lines. 1 phone per line, 2 max. For example if I am there and my wife isn't, I can buy 2 because we both have lines with AT&T plans. If you buy without an AT&T contract you are paying that expensive price... something like $599 and $699 or something.

I actually have 4 lines on my account. So if you're correct... one of those phones should be eligible for upgrade/subsidized price. I know my phone is since the last time I upgraded was when the 3G came out over 2 years ago! Thx for the info!

Best Buy surely didn't have that many... I was #28 at the Woodbridge store and I did not get one.
Ah, the ATT store. Was this for the 3G or the 3Gs? I was 3rd in line there for the 3G. I remember how their servers started crashing when I walked out. You must've been one of the ones waiting when I left.

I just talked to an Apple Store manager at around 10am this morning, they will be letting people in the mall at 6am
I just came from the gym at WOW, and after that I went to the Apple Store. I spoke with an employee and he said that their doors will be opening at 7AM, but they will let people INSIDE the mall at 6AM. I also asked him if they're letting people line up outside the mall doors, and he said you "should" be able to, but he said to check with mall security to have a more accurate answer. After that I circled the mall like twice, and circled the parking lot countless times and couldn't find any mall security. Where's mall security when you need it, right?
Anyway, I'll be sending Menlo another e-mail since they never responded to my last one. And also I found the Mall Security room. It's a really small door on the second floor near Nordstrom. It's by the like suit place and across the back of Armani Exchange. If you weren't looking for it, you'd never find it, lol. I looked inside the doors, and no one seemed to be there, and the doorknob had one of those numberpads to get in. I got their phone number though, so I'll give them a call and find out.

Damn ATT and their delay!
So it's nice for them to let us into the mall at 6AM.
Do people remember from past years at what point did they let people in the first come first serve line into the store? If so, does it become 50:50? As in, do people from the reserve and non reserve go in one after another?
Also, there's no way they'd not notify the people who are waiting that there's not enough stock right? They must know beforehand how many non-reserve iphones there are to give and will probably cut the line off accordingly?

I just spoke to an ATT rep and they're under the impression that THERE WILL BE NO PHONES AVAILABLE FOR any WALK-IN'S until June 29th.
I got a cryptic message to the contrary from an Apple rep who said, "Just show up here at 7am Thursday morning". Keep in mind, he was a newbie and just started working there 3 days prior. This was last Friday (June 25th).
I can only imagine they'll have phones available for walk-ins too. Not just reserves. But then again, I never heard of a product selling out the first day of a pre-sale!!! Maybe they could only produce the amount that was pre-sold. Either way, I'm going to Menlo to find out for myself dammie!!!

Alright, well this is what I found out, and I think it's going to be as close as we get to finding an answer.
Okay, so here's what we all know, or should know.
1. Apple Stores open at 7AM, mall doors open at 6AM.
2. AT&T will not have any phones in stock for walk-ins until June 29th, so there's no point of waiting in line for them.
3. There will be two lines for the Apple Store, one for pre-orders, and one for walk-in purchases. Walk-in purchases will be on a first come, first serve basis.
4. I sent another e-mail to Menlo Mall, and still no answer. I have a feeling they won't answer. They answered bscottd though.
5. I called mall security, and this is what he told me: He doesn't know what exactly they're doing about tomorrow morning. He did reassure that the mall doors open at 6AM. I asked him if we're allowed to wait in line earlier than 6AM, because that would be the most logical thing to let us do. He said that was true, and that they might let people wait in line, but they might not. He said that we should be able to line up outside a little before 6AM, but he said they also might not let us. He said the best way is to just go, and try out your luck. He said that mall security might make people disperse the premises, but they maybe not.
So I guess we're taking our chances.

I don't think they will be letting people in that entrance. The entrance you want is directly to tie left of that, right next to the ramp.

There's the reserved line in the front of the Apple store and then there's a non-reserved line where they originally let people in.

i wasnt checking the thread earlier but you were prolly 4-5 people in front of me.. I heard outside when the guy said nice ipad to you..
Reserved line was great because we got there early, doors opened at 7, got in the store at about 8 and was done and walking out by 8:20 after waiting for a few friends to finish up.. But that was cool though, free water n snacks along with the starbucks :D.. I got to the parking deck around 3:30AM and was like the 90th-110th person on line. When they let people in, the line for the walk-ins wrapped all the way around to the Verizon store! After a grueling 13 hours, I walked out of the Apple Store with a 32GB iPhone 4 at around 4:15PM. And there were still a lot of people waiting. It was insane.

Yeah I saw you. I was wondering what time you got outta there. I was up front. I'm sure you saw me cause I saw you always walking up there trying to figure out what exactly in the **** was going on. I was wearing a yellow and orange button up shirt, my right arm was tattoed and i was wearing a Lakers hat. What a cluster the way they handled that. The 2 lines. I mean couldn't they just have counted all the stock figured how many preorders and let walkins in accordingly. It's simple math. 15:1 ratio is just not right.

Haha! You shoulda said something to me. It would've been cool to meet someone from these forums. I asked a few people in line next to me if they were on here but they looked at me like I had 3 heads!
Yeah, I kept volunteering to go up and to estimate how long it'll be. Everyone was getting delirious. How about the fight that almost broke out cuz that guy bought the spot in front for 80 bucks! That was one of the highlights of the day. That big dude was so pissed!
Next time they should really have another plan. I heard it was 20:1 ratio at first then eventually changed to 5:1. Either way, it really wasn't fair to those who got there the night before (I think 10pm was the earliest) and to still be waiting for a phone by 3pm the next day!!! I can see if their website/servers where taking orders and didn't crash... the majority of us would've reserved if it hadn't! They were really treating the walkin line like red-headed step children.

Yeah I should've said hi but I was just not really in the mood. I was just trying to keep my cool being that I got there at 2:45 am and was not moving at all. All I kept thinking is I was so close to the front and I had to wait it out. The dude in the front of our line was there at 7pm the night before. If I remember correctly he walked out around 11am. Also there was this girl who had the nerve to try and cut. She was in the back of the line and we all noticed her up front. I mean when you are in a line for hours and hours you KNOW who has been there and who hasn't. She tried to say that her friend left and said that she could have the spot. We called one of the Apple ppl over and they sent her ass back to her spot way back... way further back than you. She walked up to the line at like 9am initially. Like that is fair.
