Hey. Just making a thread to see who all on here is gonna be headin to the Apple Store @ Southpoint Mall.
I plan to be there around 3-4 AM with lawn-chair and book. I'm one of those people who got a confirmation email for reserve, but called and found out I'm not in the system, so I'm going to pay a visit to the store before they close at 9 PM to ask the manager exactly what line I should be in.
I got summer class at 9:45 AM at UNC, but may skip depending on how fast lines move. Hopefully I should be one of the first to get in shortly after 7AM.
Anyone else?

I'm definitely going to be there, I might drive by a few times tonight to see if people are going to start real early like 11 ish ... Anyone done it here before? Ive always gone to the AT&T stores but that seems to not really be am option this year ...

Tonight should be fun. Likewise, doc, I will drive by around 11pm and see how the line is.
Apparently theres a chance of thunderstorms around evening time, but "should" clear up by 1-2 AM. Makes things more interesting, aka standing next to apple store in poncho... hahaha.
Now that AT&T isn't doing walk-ins till the 29th, these apple stores are going to be clusterf***ed to the max..

haha yeah I'm going to keep calling every hour until they close to make sure no one starts lining up before 9pm but I'm def bringing umbrellas and books and drinks an planning for a long night, possibly have some friends stop by throughout the evening to make it interesting (that's what I did for 360)

I'll see everyone tonight, too. Definitely bring your rain gear, could get messy for awhile. I'm planning on bringing my DS, among other things, to keep me occupied. I'm sure we'll be striking up some good conversations, seeing as how we'll be spending an all-nighter together!

I'll be there. Going to bring a book and maybe a game (Settlers) if someone near me in line wants to play. :) Just hoping it won't be a mess like the iPhone 3G was. The wife and I already sold our phones on Ebay to get in before the flood, so we're having withdrawal symptoms and it isn't pretty.

The Barnes & Noble at New Hope Commons just told me that B&N at southpoint lost power and will be out for a few hours, so I'm assuming that's what happened to the Apple store too ... I might do a drive by and check honestly ... the weather is terrible

Jun 23, 2010, 05:38 PM
Hey guys,
I'm here inside the Apple store on a Mac.
What that guy said earlier about 5 people here and 16 phones online was a COMPLETE LIE.
There is only ONE person here for the walk-in line and he's not even getting it, hes getting paid to wait in line for his FRIEND, who is buying the iPhone.
I am the first one here for the reservation line, but I'm just chillin in the store since no one is here yet.
I also spoke to the manager asking "How are you guys doing on supply?" He replied that they were doing pretty good and will have plenty for reservations and walk-ins, whatever that means.
So, since I have nothing to do, I'm going to just stay here inside the store, my brother is bringing me stuff later for the night.
All is well. No lines. No 16 phone bulls**t.
My name is Alan, will probably see you soon, I'm wearin a red backpack with a Carolina-blue drawstring bag. ;)

Well the manager told me that the reservation line will line-up to the left of the entrance and the walk-in line will line up to the right of the entrance. He's currently busy right now, but I can ask him about how lines will work and post an update later.

I'm in line now. There are already about 70 people in line. If you're not one of them, you'd better get here now.
I'm not kidding either. I'm about #55 in line. Here's hoping they have more than 54 phones! This makes the line for the iPhone 3G look tame.

I have an iphone reserved.. so I should have an iphone no matter how long the walk in line is since there is a phone at the store reserved for me... right?
Also I'm not spending the night, I was planning to get there around 6:30ish. I know the line will be ridiculous, but it shouldn't matter... how is the reservation line looking? is there one?

There is a seperate queue for preorders so getting here at 6:30 will be 30 minutes earlier than you need to be here. They said that they will hold preorders all day.
If people are cutting, speak up. I'm sure people will back you up. I will. I'm right near the back corner.

Sitting here reading MacRumors and noticed this thread. I was going to head over at 3:30 AM to get in line by 4:00. Hows the line looking? The only reason I ask is I have done this twice for iPhones and once for an iPad and while they have gotten progressively better (shorter) each time, I know the response this time was tremendous. Oh and I have some meetings at work that missing won't be good for my paying for more Apple shiny objects in the future. I'm hoping to get in and get out (nice wish I know).
So how bad is the line now? Should I drop everything and rush over to drop my chair in line?
Concerned Apple Geek....
P.S. I have mine reserved...

if when you say "reserved" you mean preordered for store pickup you should be fine getting here somewhere before or around 7am as there us a seperate line like I said. I just walked up there and it appears two people are in the line for preorder pickup compared to over 100 at this point for unallocated phones. Not sure how fast it will go compared to the other line but I would assume it would b at least as fast. The line area they have set up for it is maybe 30 feet at most so they don't expect too much waiting around.

Yep, I have mine pre-ordered for pick up at the store. Thanks for the detail about the line. It's a bit of a haul (Wake Forest) for me to the store and since you unfortunate souls are there and willing to do recon, I figured I should take advantage of it and not head out too early but also not screw up and be late.

Ok, just now two Apple store employees walked the line a couple of times and after doing so one of them said "thanks for waitIng, your patience will be rewarded." That's as good as a confirmation they have plenty of phones IMO.
When asked point point blank how many they had, Of course they did not answer, but the other employee said they would cut the line off If they saw it was obvious they had more people than phones.
So maybe still hope for people to keep coming to get one.
I have to think Apple might have reallocated their stock from everyone else to the Apple stores and that's why all of the sudden you can't find them anywhere.

HEY Thats my old stomping grounds... i used to work in that Apple Store for a good bit!!! Those people are great. Happy Camping out there! If they run out of the iphone you want, and you get to meet the head manager named Mark (or a guy named Brad Spiker, or Tara C.) you can tell em "a really tall black guy named Chris C. is my good friend and he says you should hook me up"
haha... i doubt if i still have any pull there, but hey, you never know!
I'd love to be out camping with your guys but I'm stuck overseas working on a project (also selling my 3GS for insane amounts of American dollars) and will miss all the launch day fun :/ And of course the pre-order was out of the question for me since I want a white 32GB.

Is this the Brier Creek walmart? I went to the morrisville Walmart and tgey said they would have none but Brier Creek would get one. I figured that was full of crap and did not want to risk being number two if true.
Looks like most of the peeps in line at Southpoint will get one but not all. There was between 250-300 in line at 6:45. They are going through right now giving out number cards.

Lol, when I lined up for the 3G at Southpoint, it wrapped around the back (actually it wrapped around going up the side of B&N, but when the manager showed up he didn't like all these strange Apple folk next to his store so he had security move us to wrap around the back of the Apple store bordering the parking lot. Well, wouldn't you know the stupid news truck was parked right next to where I was lined up now. It had it's engine running and all the smoke and gas bellowing out that thing was practically choking many of us in line. They had hundreds of 3G iPhones that day, so I am sure they will have even more iPhone 4's today. I bet everyone today will get one. I'll tell you though, after seeing those line pics at 11pm, I'm so glad mine came FedEx yesterday. I guess I'm getting old, lol!

Crabtree preorder line is ~300 people. first-come-first-serve is about 100 people. I would imagine FCFS line isn't moving at all. Apple guy at the door said off the cuff that the preorder line is moving about 1 person/minute.
"oh, preorder line won't be a big deal at all!" I thought --
edit: Unfortunately I can't wait around all day for my preorder, and I left after only moving up ~10 people in an hour. So +1 for one of you first-come-first-serve-ers!

Jun 24, 2010, 12:09 PM
When I finally got my phone about 11:15 AM, there were still maybe 150-200 people in line for first come first served. The reservation.preorder pickup line was down to maybe 40 or so.
For about the first hour from 7:00-8:00, the reservation line was getting 10 people in the store for each single FCFS customer. Then they dropped down to 5-1 and then 2-1 and then parity as the preorder line dwindled. At one point about 10:30, they reversed it to 1-5 in favor of FCFS, then switched back after 30 minutes to 2-1 in favor of preorders at the time I got in. Essentially they were doing their best to be fair to everyone and trying to minimize waiting.
There were a couple of people on both sides that were not too happy, but I guess thats a good compromise. It appeared that the reservation preorder line was waiting around 1- 1.5 hours at around 11:00. My guess is the last of the FCFS people will not get a phone until well into the evening or night as I am sure a rush of reservation people came during Lunch and will pick up again around 4 or 5 for evening preorder pickups which will force them to cut back on FCFS people in the store.
It does take about 15 minutes average per customer. Some, like me, just wanted the phone and did not need to look at anything. Others spent time going over some basic functions of the phone and selecting bumpers, etc. Essentially, they were helping each customer until they were satisfied just like every other day. Or they had issues with authorized users or other activation problems with the account which had to be cleard up, which of course took longer. No issues that I saw or heard of slowdowns with ATTs stuff, so they either fixed it somehow or allowing the phones out early or a combination helped.
I never was able to find out if they ran out of phones or not. It was going to be close and I beleive that they told people at the end of the line that they would likely not get one, but since the back of the line was fully three sides of the building away from me, I just don't know.
The funniest thing to me was people coming to just browse an iPad or somethign random today and being shocked when they were told they just could not allow them in due to fire codes and customer service times, One lady even came up and asked if it was like this every day at the Apple Store.

Woke up not too long ago from my iPhone-Camp-Out after a nap. So let's go over the whole Experience:
1) Arrive at the Apple store to be #20 in the line for people without reservations.
2) Played musical chairs a few times as the Mall tried to decide how best to line up the mobs of people.
3) Watched a few movies on the iPad and geeked out with the nearby people as we waited. Overall the people were awesome. People held spots for others as we all used the bathroom, got up and stretched our legs, ran stuff to/from our cars, etc. Thankfully the Apple Store had free wifi, so I was able to get on the internet, IM, etc. on my iPad.
4) Around midnight the line was already wrapped around the front, the one side, and the back of the apple store. Just a crazy number of people there compared to the previous iPhone launches.
5) News crews rolled in around 3 AM. One woman from the local news paper was taking pictures of the people as they were asleep. Like all up in there face, multiple angles, many shots. It was pretty hilarious. Everyone who was conscious had a pretty good laugh. Those who were unconscious will find themselves in the news & observer tomorrow.
6) Doors were scheduled to open at 7 AM. Around 6 AM, everyone started packing up their chairs, running to the bathroom and just generally getting ready for the home stretch. Everyone around me who camped out all agreed to each other that it was a very fun experience and we'd all do it again.
7) About 6:45 a lot of noise and such starts to come from the Apple Store as employees then burst out of the back of the store and start running up and down the lines cheering, giving everyone in line high-fives, etc. They also announced that they were going to give priority to people in the "reservation line" priority...This is where things start to go a little sour.
8) The doors open promptly at 7:00 AM. They let in 20 people from the "reservation line" and two people from the "non-reservation" line. Then nothing happens for 20 minutes. Eventually people start coming out, and they start letting in more and more people from the reservation line.
9) After about an hour, they had only let about 4 people in from the non-reservation line and people are starting to get a bit mad. At this point about 40-50 people from the reservation line had gone through
10) They announced that they are doing a 10-to-1 ratio of people... 10 people with reservations to 1 person without.
11) All told, I was #20 in line. It took me 2 and 1/2 hours to get in to the store. I was expecting it to take me maybe an hour, but the ratio of reservation to non-reservation people was ridiculous. They did bump it up to a 5-to-1 ratio a little bit before I made it in, but that didn't help much.
12) A lot of people were taking a LOT of time to do their purchasing, which many outside were peeved about. One person, who I guess was having issues with his credit card, was in there for about 2 hours taking up a salesman's time.
13) Once I was in the store, at about 9:45, it was smooth sailing. I basically did my purchase as fast as I could, in order to help get the people behind me in line in and out sooner. All told, it took about 15 minutes.
14) Got a 32GB Black iPhone 4 (they didn't have any of the white models at all). I also got Apple Care (warranty) and a dock. All told, about $420 with taxes and such.
After I made it out of the store, A fedex truck was at the back of the apple store unloading a couple of palettes of what was likely new iPhones. Given how small the boxes are, there were several hundred if not a thousand or more in just that delivery. I think everyone who shows up (and is wiling to wait) will get an iPhone at Southpoint today.
I got to my car and did a quick check out of the phone to make sure it looked good. Everything appeared to be in the box, phone looked to be in pristine condition, so I headed home.
I stopped at McDonald's on the way home. It was almost 10:30AM at this point, and I hadn't eaten anything since about 7pm the night before. I grabbed some breakfast.
After I got home, I synced my new iPhone with iTunes and made sure everything appeared to be in order. It did.
Then I crashed :-D It was nap time and I was exhausted. I napped from about 11am until 1:30.
After waking up, i've had a chance to play with it more. My observations pretty much mimic everyone elses:
1) The phone is FAST!
2) The screen is absolutely beautiful!
3) I love the new design. It feels rock solid and looks gorgeous.
4) Face time, the new video-calling feature, works EXTREMELY well. I did a quick video call with a friend who was one of the lucky ones to get through with the iPhone pre-order and had his delivered. The video and voice quality was VERY VERY good. The video calling works just like a phone call. Select the contact you want to video call and click the "face time" button. The iPhone takes care of everything else. Absolutely incredible.
Overall: The experience was extremely positive. The only downside was how Apple handled the people with reservations vs. the people without. When you see the line for the reservations move fairly quickly, and you've only taken 1/2 a step towards the entrance in 2 hours, it got very frustrating pretty quickly. Given how slowly the non-reservation line moved, I am glad I got there when I did. If I had shown up an hour or two later, I might be waiting 3-4 hours longer for my phone than I did. It was starting to get hot by the time I made it in to the store.
Anyway, I have my new iPhone and I am happy. Tired, but Happy.

Were you at crabtree or southpoint? very different experience at crabtree as far as i saw.

Southpoint. I thought of going to Crabtree, but I was a little afraid of excactly how they might handle the lines and whether they would let us in the Mall or not. IF they didn;t, I wanted to avoid any kind of gold rush from peopel waiting at various entrances for the Mall to actually open. Turns out, Crabtree was a much better choice probably.

No way man, 11am at crabtree was hundreds of people in both lines, with more in the preorder line. We moved once in the hour I was there. Had to ditch after that. Going to try my luck at a local ATT store next week.

My buddy went today and got a replacement at crabtree without a problem (his phone from the ATT store was defective.) it did sound like it came in a refurb box though (the replacement)
