would a 9400gt macbook pro meet my expectations?

Hi, I'm looking at a 2009 macbook pro in pristine condition. 15 inch screen, 2.53 ghz c2d, 7200 rpm HD, and the 9400 gt card which I know next to nothing about. For 1600 dollars.

is that a decent graphics card? could I play slightly older games (half-life 2, portal) at full settings on a 1920x1080 monitor? could I play starcraft ii at reduced settings?

also, do you think it's worth it?

and it's still within its first year. If I bought it, what would be the cheapest way to get applecare for it, and how much would that cost?

a 15" with the 9400m gpu?
not worth it at all
heres what all apples current/last gen gpus get in 3dmark 06
9400m 1733
320m 4442
9600m gt 5163
330m gt 6465

the 9400m is quite weak
the 320m in the new 13" is allot faster
but for playing games you should go with either the 9600m gt or the 330m gt
 
You can get a 2009 MBP 15.4" 2.8GHz 320GB 7200RPM Antiglare full 1-year warranty for $1700 at Apple refurb store. Very fast. They come on about once a week but go quickly. Agonized over a 2010 but wanted standard res antiglare so I bought one about a month ago. Love it! You can even get a 2010 iX model on the refurb store already.

Considering that model was only $1600 new (with student discount), I would say it is worth maybe $1000 now.
The 9400m was never a good/powerful GPU, yet better than intel's offerings.
If you are really ready to spend $1600, you might as well spend $1800 on the new 15". And if you are student, its only $1700, and you get a free iPod touch and printer.
 
Well the MBP your are buying costs $1699 brand new, so the its not worth it. Also, for $1799 you can get a new 15" MBP with a modern Core i5, Intel graphics and great new Nvidia graphics. So the MBP that you are looking at shouldn't be sold for more than $1200.
 
I currently have the exact version of the mac you're looking at buying. I was able to play the Starcraft 2 beta without any issues. This system is fairly fast, but it's definitely not the most powerful. I've not had any issues, and I can get decent framerates in almost every game I play, including Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition.

I will say however, that 1600 for it now is a little steep. Is it new in the box?
