View Full Version : Problems with Dovecot and mailbox subfolders during system restore

Jun 21, 2010, 01:52 PM

Operating system: Mac Osx 10.6.3
Mac Server Mail program which uses a Dovecot database format.

We reinstalled 10.6 osx server and used the settings from the most recent Time Machine back.

The problem i ran into is every user after Meg (Myla, Tom, etc) alphabetically did not migrate its way out of Time Machine.

I recreated these user in work group manager then I went and looked at the mail database to find the old folder which their mail resided in, (which I could see in Server Admin) copied it to their new user folder and changed the permissions so they could access it. The inbox folder works fine along with all of its messages. The problem is all of the user's folders (Sent, Trash, etc) show up in their mail client and in squirrel mail but when you try to open the folder the message is displayed "Mailbox doesn't exist."

Attempts I have made to solve the issue:
1. I tried recreating the folder, which eliminates the error message, but the messages that should appear in these folders do not exist.

Helpful tips I could use:
Where I can find subfolder message storage.

Any other way to obtain these messages located in these subfolders?

Thank you for your help.

Where I can find subfolder message storage.

Dovecot stores subfolders on the filesystem beginning with a dot, e.g., .Sent. By default, these files are "hidden" in Unix from most programs unless you specifically request to see them, e.g., ls -a.
