According to the apple website:
"iPod touch can stay connected to Wi-Fi when asleep so you can receive incoming VoIP calls and notifications from compatible third-party apps."
http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/ios4-software-update.html

Does anyone know how to disable this? I couldn't find the setting anywhere.

There is an on-off switch under the Wi-Fi Networks tab in the settings.

Is this another feature only available on the late models?

When I turn it on from sleep, it shows the wifi signal at the top, then it goes away for like 10 seconds, then comes back on. I can't figure out if its actually staying on when its asleep, or if its coming on quickly, then dyeing out.

If it is only in the later models, I sure as heck can't find this feature on my 3GS, and the icon still disappears and reappears after being in sleep mode (unless it is always connected, but the icon just doesn't say it).
