i was wondering how i can share an external hard disk on a mac? is there any simple mechanism like the sharing the printers.

if you have a usb drive and network hub with a spare port, have a look at the linksys nslu2.

In windows this is as easy as right-clicking the folder you want to share and setting your share preferences for that folder. This makes me think that by hitting ctrl+I on the selected folder you want to share in OS X you could change the permissions to allow access. If you look under group there is a "network" option. I don't know if this is correct. I don't exactly know what those options change.

After searching the apple support pages I found this . I think you may have to have OS X Server to be able to share anything other than you home directory. If you download the linked PDF and go to "managing SMB share points", then click on "creating an SMB Share point and setting privileges" it explains how to share anything. (volumes, partitions, and individual folders) I'm still trying to figure out if regular mac os x can do this. 🙁
I have an external firewire hard disk. I did want to keep plugging and unplugging the hard disk from one mac to another. When ever i connect from my powerbook to the ibook can share the main hard disk of my ibook and printers on it but not the external hard disk that was connected to it. I was wondering if there was a simple way to share the external hard disk.
