iPod touch New features in iOS4 calendar?

I've only seen pics only but never a description on a "message indicator" number on the calendar on the home screen. Any idea what thats for?

Also, once in the calandar, on the bottom right, in the blank area to the right of the "Month" button, I have seen what looks like a down arrow and a number. Any ideas what thats for?
