After working on a big project on a Dell (of course) Latitude CPx, it just had to crash- yes I saw the blue screen. The end.

Today offically marks the day i switch to mac.

"you die when you see the ring (from the movie), you switch when you see the blue screen"

Wish me luck

Congrats on switching.

What exactly did the blue screen say?? You might be able to look it up and fix it...

But Mac OS X is still better

Which Mac are you considering?

sorry to hear that man, i hope your new mac will give you better piece of mind. if you have any questions just search or post it and i'm sure someone will help you along the buying/using process.

Remember to do a lot (or a little if needed) of searching here on MacRumors from the Search tab for questions you have related to Macs if you can't figure them out yourself. I have been known for kicking mud in the faces of certain newbs in the past, and I don't see myself dropping that habit anytime soon. So to save me from kicking your ass :D do some searching here and at www.apple.com/support/ to have your Mac-related questions answered.

The reason I made all the newb comments is for two things: [1] Most of the time, all the resolves to your Mac questions are right here or at Apple, so it's best if you learn how to search for those answers rather than have someone do it for you, and [2] sometimes, after you post your question, you suddenly realize the answer and end up feeling stupid afterwards. So really develop a method for searching answers to your Mac-related questions here and on Apple, as well as determining if you even need to rely on looking for the answer online.

This is sort of sad. Just yesterday another Dell owner said the exact same thing to me. I thought Dell used to make decent machines.

The new corporate objectives of Dell seems to be " i) Take over computer industry. ii) Drive userbase to Macs." ;)

They are decent machines.. but run absolute crap operating systems :P (dell)

well, sorry to hear about your blue screen of doom. although i guess it is good that you're taking up Macs as your computer & OS of choice. :D

but did you 'administrate' your Dell properly? obviosly, OS X is a superior OS, but i've seen people's Macs doing crazy things, jamming, freezeing etc. no matter what computer you've got, if you dont' look after it and keep it 'clean' it'll do strange things to you.

Oh I hate PCs too. I was working on this really great paper then the PC was like "Beep, beep, beep." And my paper was, like, GONE. And it was a really good paper too so I had to re-write it and then it wasn't as good.

congratulations!
You won't regret it!!!
Loving my switch - and although I'm stuck on PC's at work - all my own stuff is done on my PB!
had a interesting (aka bad) experience at a mates house on the weekend....

so many restarts / frozen applications / programs not responding / it was laughable!

Grabbed my PB and voila!

Update.....
I just turned the dell on again today and it started up (very slowly), i was just able to get my files off the hd and onto a memory key! As I look at it now it turned to a blue screen and says- a bunch of numbers- then kernal panic, then beginning dumb of physical memory.

Well, I guess i am lucky!

You're better off going to these forums http://www.macmentor.org/, this place can get pretty rude if you ask too many "dumb" questions - i've been there myself.

hey i think you made the right decision. but i have to say i like PCs (just a little) im a college student and i have a nice student job in the IT dept of my school. if everyone used apples and everything worked as well as apples then i wouldnt have anything to do. it would probably take only 1 person to run the entire IT dept. but with all the problems with windows i have a job!!!!!

but i am glad to here you switched, you are one of the smart few!

translated dell builds computer with crappy hardware and hardware that will have issues will it self. Home build PC dont general have that problem and are just about as stable as a Mac. And yes that is running windows XP

I have to (unfortunately for Dell) agree. My sis bought an $1050 dell (after rebate) and its ethernet card has died 3 times already in 11 months. She called thier technical support, which was in INDIA! She tried to be nice, but couldn't understand what the guy was telling her to do (no joke). She said, thats not like thier commercials! I think dell think of computers are just like typewriters...

and yet again the reason I built my own PC. I know what I put in there. I still have the same warrentyis just they are just though several diffence compainy depending on who made the part. Software wise I know exactly what is installed on my computer. I did not start with all that extra crap that the premade compainis (apple included in the list) that is installed on computer. I put only the stuff I wanted on there.

The other advatage in building your own is it makes trouble shooting a lot easier. Heck just from building my own computer it makes it heck of a lot easier to trouble shoot other peoples computer because in working out the final bugs in my own system I know where a loto f hte little stuff is. Plus on installing a lot of the stuff you learn your way around pretty fast so knowing what is causing an error and how to fix it makes it quite nice.

Can I ask what version of Windows you were using? A CPx generally is a 2-4 year old system that is in the 500-800Mhz range.

And why was it GONE? Was it because you never actually saved it? Or backed it up?

I don't hate PC's, in certain places I go, it's just what happens to be available. Love my Mac.

Too many people don't decide to save any of their work until they're completely finished. Obviously, their work doesn't count, if they don't take a moment away from it so they'll have it later. It's also tough, on those applications that have an auto-save option, to set the option.

I've seen once or twice when the application deleted the file on disk, which was bizarre but that's certainly the exception.

I don't care for the way Windows works, but it's not quite that unstable that you should lose everything you're doing.

I just like to chip-in and let everyone know I just got a G5 iMac (Gift) and I must say there is nothing like it... I had my doubts, but no one makes anything like this stuff... there's no comparison in my mind... I again feel the same way when I first switched! Its great.

I don't hate PC's (Wintel) but I don't appreciate them the same way I do this little G5. Its really a night and day difference.

Yeah, I believe since Office XP, that MS Word goes absolutely NUTS creating .baks to make sure you have a backup in case you crash.

Yeah, I believe since Office XP, that MS Word goes absolutely NUTS creating .baks to make sure you have a backup in case you crash.

MS Word has had an auto-save option since version 4 or 5 but I think you have to go into Preferences and enable it.

Even AppleWorks has an option but it's strangely set to save when idle, whatever that means.

You probably have seen this, it's pretty old but very entertaining. Be sure and use the media player. Fun! I hate windows.

Eww, I hate windows. I use a windows 98 machine at work. I have to restart it daily in order to get it to print. It takes like 10 minutes each time. We have a Windows XP machine but, it doesn't have any applications on it. I doubt it ever will. We have a unopened eMac from a contest from about a year ago. I hate my workplace, they are idiots.
