"The Battle of Algiers"

I just finished re-watching this movie, which comes packaged with a bevy of extras, including commentary by Richard Clarke.

It is brilliant and highly relevant to the current situation in Iraq and in comparable situations around the world (Israel/Palestine comes to mind).

I feel it is necessary viewing for all who wish to understand the complexities of scenarios such as listed above, as well as the uniquely human traits that seem to always have us arriving at them repeatedly.

I agree. Great movie. Strange the DOD had everyone watch it. What did they learn?

I took my son to see it when it was rereleased in the theaters. Not an easy movie to watch, but it is as relevant now as it was when I saw it in the early '70s. The French colonel in charge of wiping out the NLF is a character that should be scrutinized, no matter how uncomfortable he may make you, by all Americans.
