For those interested, this topic is also discussed in - although not the primary focus of - this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=94743) thread.

It's not really much of a threat at all when you read the facts about "Opener." It's not really a virus, worm or trojan and it cannot propagate itself in any kind of automated fashion. It's simply a script and there aren't any definitive reports of it being out in the wild. Sounds like a lot of hoopla over nothing if you ask me...

Oh, that thing's been floating around for a while now. It's basically a payload waiting for a good exploitable root process to come along.

Who isn't going to wonder why they are being asked for their login and password so this thing can install? Seriously, I know there are a wide range of users out there (as far as skill) level. But who is going to readily type in their information? As far as I am concerned this is a non-issue for 90% of users out there.

I am really scared that someone would login my computer and do 'sudo rm -rf /', then put in the administrator password and I would lose all my data...
Macs are so unsafe..

ha ha. i read it that way too.

now back to the topic at hand. this has been discussed before. i think mac users have been "widely" thought to be intelligent users.

please use common sense, when installing dubious software which needs admin rights.

you do not let any strangers in your house, do you guys?

this thing, scripting things to create havoc in a computer system is nothing new. this would pop up sooner or later. but with a little common sense, we will all be fine. e.g. voting for kerry... ;) ups...

Hi, I'm a stranger in Nagromme's house. His door was open and his passwords were all on a Post-It note.

What's all this about a treat?
