Installing OS 9

I am a relatively new mac user, i have just changed my eMac to a iBook, i want to install OS 9, and have panther installed. How do i go about installing it. So i can dual boot.. Cheers Declan

If you have a G4 ibook you're out of luck.
Only G3 iBooks can run OS 9.
You can still use your os9 apps in classic environment.

I used to miss os9 after i installed osx (10.1), but nowadays os9 is abadoned.
I think it's over two years since last time apple came with a os9 update.

Let the old days go, and enjoy our new improved OS 😀

Yup i have a G3..I love Panther but want to play tomb raider series again, which don't fully work under classic, thats why i need OS 9 dual boot.

Boot from the OS9 cd (hold down C on startup)
Install it to your disk, A CLEAN INSTALL (be sure to uncheck update filesystem and such).

Boot back in osx, look if you can find the OS9 folder in the "Startup disk" in the prefpanes.
If it does, then you are good to reboot.. (don't choose the OS9 folder)

IF you hold down X at startup your machine will boot OS9.

One question, why use x to boot Os 9 instead of selecting from startup disk?

I actually thought X booted into OS X (it makes the most sense anyway!), but it's perfectly OK to use Startup Disk instead.

Every new Mac ships with the latest version of MacOS 9. Has it been removed from your computer?

It was bought of ebay without disks..I thought newer mac DIDN'T boot os 9..

New Macs can't boot into OS9. OS9 is installed for the Classic Environment. If it is new, then you are out of luck. If not, then you should be able to find an old copy of OS9 at a thrift store (don't ask why, but they are the best places to find old software cheap), or from eBay. Then you can follow the instructions layed out in earlier posts.
