View Full Version : iPhone 4 Pictures Being Sent Sideways?

Snowman3459
Jun 24, 2010, 12:54 PM
I have tested this now and it seems to do it every time.

When I send a picture to my email it also turns sideways even sending different sized images.

Also, when sending pictures messages my girlfriend confirmed the pictures are sideways every time. I also tried rotating the picture myself using Photogene but it is still being sent sideways.

iOS4 issue?

Really? No one at all has this issue?

Do you have your screen rotation locked to portrait? Try unlocking it, taking the picture again, then sending it.

See what happens.

Happened to me this morning no matter what size I selected to email. You're not the only one bro. Oh and my orientation was unlocked, cuz i just figured out how to lock it.lol

Yeah, it's happening to many people, there was a thread posted earlier today about this same issue, the thread is probably bumped down a few pages by now, but I'd venture to say it's happening to everyone..

Nope no lock.

I just sent another picture and she said it was straight, but this time I used the HD camera instead of the front facing VGA.

There might be an issue with the VGA camera.

Hmmm....

Well, if it's not something obvious, then it's probably a software bug. We'll probably have an update in a few weeks at the latest that will fix some of these early issues.

Can anyone test there VGA and HD cameras to see if BOTH send sideways?

Here's my experience:

HD Camera- Sends sideways to email, but is straight when using MMS

VGA- Have not tested email, but sends sideways through MMS.

Update: VGA is sending straight via email

I used the HD camera sent it to my gmail account, in the email the preview of the picture was straight. But when I clicked on "view" that's when it shifted sideways. If you click on "download" and download the photo it also comes out straight...

Same. I just sent another and when viewing the picture, it was in fact sideways.

Hi, I took a bunch of photos with my iPhone 3G running iOS4 and subsequently posted them on my blog. When viewed on my iPhone 3G, my iPhone 4 and my iPad, they appear correctly oriented.

However, when viewed on a Mac or PC, on either Firefox or Safari, they are sideways.

FYI, when taking pics / videos it doesn't matter if orientation lock is on.
When you put it on it's side it will respond appropriately

I don't know what it could be. Submit feedback to apple

I believe I'm experiencing the same issue as the OP with my video.

Here's a test we did, let me know if its similar. Can't figure out why its being sent to YouTube like that.

This happens to me too.

This is a stretch but has ANYONE tried restoring the iPhone4 to the ios4 thats on Apples website? Is it a possibility that the iOS4 that was put on the phone pre-shipping has some of these quirks (antenna, proximity etc)???? Its a crap shoot but just throwing it out there if someone is willing to try.

We need to submit this to Apple.

I took two photos using my iPhone 4 of a 3GS that I am selling. I emailed them to my computer from my iPhone. One of them did this very same thing.

True that every OS version ever released has had some weird bug so this should be expected. I remember when photos saved from the net would be too grainy to even look at.

It happens on my 3GS too, and I think it was happening before I upgraded to iOS4. I emailed myself some pictures, opened the email on my computer (gmail). In the email preview the pictures were right. When I clicked on them or downloaded them the were sideways.

This also happens to me on my 3GS with OS4. I have done a restore and the problem still exists. I'm pretty sure this was not happening prior to the software upgrade because no one ever complained about me sending photos sideways until recently when I upgraded.

Has anyone submitted this to apple yet?

Hopefully they won't deny this being an issue.

Just got this email from Apple Senior Advisor.......

Hi,

I have submitted the information you provided to me to our engineers; at this point, it is queued to be reviewed first come first serve. I honestly don't anticipate an initial response back until early next week when it should be assigned to a specific engineer at that time. As soon as I receive that notification I will reach out to share that with you.

Thanks for your input and patience while we investigate this. Have a great holiday weekend!

Doubt it's going to be fixed. I'm sure this small blemish will be overlooked by Apple.

Another issue, what's with pictures on the VGA camera being mirrored?

It's on purpose. So that when you're facetiming you can move the phone in what most people would consider a more logical fashion.

Did they realize that's not very appealing when taking pictures? A lot of VGA camera pictures I have taken look quite dumb because of the mirrored effect.

Facetime may be understandable, but I think they could have fixed it for the camera.

This is a real problem but has to do with Apple not Facebook. Upload from the Facebook app and problem is solved:

1. Click on NEWS FEED.
2. Click on the CAMERA icon in the upper LEFT to the left of the status update field.
3. Click TAKE PHOTO OR VIDEO if you want to do it live, or CHOOSE FROM LIBRARY if you want to upload a video/photo that you've already taken.
4. Click on CAMERA ROLL.
5. Click on the video/photo of choice.
6. Play it to make sure it's the one you want(if a video).
7. If it is, click CHOOSE in the bottom right (if not, click cancel and find the one you want).
8. Fill in the TITLE and DESCRIPTION.
9. Click UPLOAD in the upper RIGHT.

You should expect a fix probably the update after this upcoming one.

This tiny issue is going to overlooked by Apple and most likely won't be fixed.

I'm sure only reception issues will be fixed. (Or attempted to be)

I had this issue with my 3G when I upgraded to iOS4 and I picked up my new iPhone 4 today and it is doing the same thing (sending pics sideways).

Not sure why Apple's QA department didn't catch that before the iOS was released but it should be very easy for them to fix in the next release.

I've encountered a similar problem in the course of adding content to a website, and since it is public page, you can replicate the issue. See the photo of the kit associated with recipient number 56:

http://lucidicus.org/recipients.php#56

On every web browser I've tested, it is displayed as vertical, which is correct. Yet when I view the page in Safari on an iPod Touch, it is displayed sideways. It is the only image on the entire Lucidicus.org site that does this. I believe it may have been taken with an iPhone. I've tried a few things, and I'm pretty sure it is not CSS-related.

I guess this is not fixed yet?

I have a 3Gs and since I put the v4 OS on it, the photos are [seemingly] randomly sideways depending on where I am viewing them, regardless of the orientation of the phone when I originally took the photo.

Snowman: I am having the exact same issue when I send a pic to my aol email address or to Facebook, the pics are sideways. When I send the pic to my mobile me account, it is fine. When I hold the camera in landscape mode,
the pictures are okay to both address, but I cannot hold the camera vertical/portrait and get it right. Very annoying and, trust me, many people are going to have this problem.

Dear Losislos: You are 100% correct, that if you upload from the Facebook app on the I phone 4 app, the pic. comes out fine. But, I just tried going to the camera roll, clicking on a pic, then sending it directly to my Facebook page, and guess what, it was sideways. So, something is screwy. It does not matter if the portrait icon is locked or unlocked. Now, if I hold the phone on the side or landscape, take the pic, it will go correctly to my aol or mobile me account. But, if I hold the phone just on vertical or portrait, the picture will be sideways on my aol account, but perfect on my mobile me account. Very strange to say the least. Thanks. In addition, I just tried sending some more pics from my iphone 4 to Facebook. It comes up great on the phone, but it did not come up on my Facebook page on my desktop. This is crazy. Well, the only thing I know now is that if you hold the camera on landscape that the pics will be sent to the email addresses correctly, not so if you hold it in portrail. Have a good weekend.

Bob, I am starting to feel the same way. Never had this picture problem with my 3 G. Now, sometimes my pics go to Facebook and sometimes they do not. If I hold the phone in landscape/sideways and take the pictures, fine they will go to the e-mail addresses, irrespective if the portrait icon is on or off, makes no diffference. I also notice that the battery on the i 4 seems to go down much more quickly then the i 3, and I have the brightness down, the WiFi off, and the multitask icons, on the movable dock off. So, I am wondering about this whole thing.

Last week I sent the first photo I had ever taken in landscape mode on my 4. Got strange email in response, about it being upside down. I looked in the sent email folder, and it was fine. Since I bcc myself from the phone, I checked at home. On my Windows laptop (Outlook 2007), the picture was upside down. On my Mac Pro (Mac Mail), it was fine. My sister had it upside down on a Windows box using web mail.

Hi all: Well, after fussing with this picture in portrait deal going sideways, there are two options that I now know of to fix the problem. 1.) Take all your pics in landscape mode. Then you can send them to pc's and other e-mail address and they will come out just fine. Remember, when holding the iphone 4 in landscape mode, keep the home button to the right when shooting for a perfect shot. If you put the home button to the left, the picture will be upside down. 2.) If you still like to take pics in portrait mode, then you should download an app, from Itunes, called BEST CAMERA for $2.99. It is highly rated, even by an Apple exec. Well I just got finished downloading the app. I took my picture, keeping the camera in the traditional portrait mode, through this app. Good news!! I sent the pic to my aol address and this time, it was perfect. In addition, I also sent it to my Facebook page, and it was perfect. So, this app was the answer to my problems and I thank the writer on another site for the recommendation. So, I am not going to worry about this anymore. I went to Apple today and they all had different responses to the problem, and most never even heard of the complaints. They basically blamed it all on other things, outside the Apple world. Good luck to all of you. Technically, I do not know the ins and outs of how it all works, but orientation has been changed and it works.

Aug 9, 2010, 12:36 AM
I had exactly the same problem. My 3 G was perfect and now with the iPhone 4, I have problems. I wrote a long paragraph about how to solve it, below your message. 1.) Take all pics in landscape, which is a pain, but then they will be in the right mode. Make sure the home button is on the right, because on the left, the pics will be upside down. 2.) This is the one I like. Download BEST CAMERA from I Tunes for $2.99. Open the app and take your photos from this app. In portrait mode, it works perfect. I send the pics to my e-mail address at aol and Facebook and now they both work fine. So, I am finished messing with this problem. Try it out and you won't have any more problems. All the best and good luck.

This happens to me as well. I did a few tests by emailing myself some pictures that I took with the camera app.

Sent a pic to my gmail account and to my work email. Mail app on my mac as well as gmail via the web show the picture correctly in portrait mode. In outlook, the pic shows sideways.

I saw some others posting about the way the exif data is written to the image for orientation purposes. Looks like outlook doesn't use that data as intended and is showing my pictures all screwed up.

What was the purpose for the change? It worked fine in the past, not sure why Apple decided to fix something that wasn't broken.

Pics I take in landscape mode all look fine. In all three mail clients I used for the portrait pic.

My VIDEOS AND PHOTOS are always upside down once they leave the iPhone. If I play the videos in Quicktime they are fine, if I use any other player they are upside down.

Now it seems I am using the phone "upside down." When I do videos I like the volume buttons on top because I use them to start/stop videos (jailbreak app called Snappy) and take photos using the volume button as a photo button. However if Quicktime Player knows the right resolution and no other program does it seems strange.

I am having the same problem, both with a iPhone 3, and with iPhone 4, but ended up with the problem after "upgrading" to 4.XX.

I have been in touch with Apple tech support, and they now blame it on the rest of the world. Here is the answer I got:

According to what info they have provided it sounds like the industry standard for EXIF data was changed in May/June of this year and that 4.0 which was released at the end of June complied with that change. From what I understand any change in how mail clients like Outlook view pictures reflects that change in EXIF data not how the iPhone itself sends the image.

If I understand it right, they are saying is that ALL Windows, Youtube, Facebook and other non Apple users should change something because Apple changed something.

Does this makes sense?

I personally am not buying it. I am ready to return my iPhone.

You can also rotate them outside of the iPhone. On the Windows platform I use Irfanview which performs lossless rotations.
