Previous reports indicated that current Macs (iMacs, iBooks) along with new PowerMacs are shipping with Jaguar.

According to ThinkSecret (http://www.thinksecret.com/news/jaguarshipping2.html) - Jaguar, itself, is shipping.

According to emails sent from the online Apple store, the company has begun shipping some copies as of yesterday.

Great, I hope they manage to get quite a lot of those pre-orders out in time. I cancelled my pre-order this morning because we discovered (last week) that Apple's government rates now extend to state and local governments, so my wife was able to buy it at the government EPP rate, which is $64.50.

Then it took 3 days to get through to actually cancel my order (and upgrade the shipping on my wife's order from the default ground to next-day). You would think in this day and age you'd be able to do that sort of stuff automatically online without having to wait in a phone queue - maybe there's some other technology they need to license from Amazon. Most of the day yesterday the phone queue for order changes was over an hour.

My wife eventually got through at 7am Central (queue was only 10 minutes then) to make the order changes.

The sooner it gets here, the better - it's not just that I'm anxious to have Jaguar, but I've got a complete system rebuild (repartitioning, clean install, etc) I want to do when it arrives, and I'm looking forward to the day when my computer is once again The Way I Like It.

I just spoke with the people at the Online Store and they said that no copies the stand alone Jag had been shipped and that they would not until the 24th. (Don't flame me. That is just what the lady told me.) I ordered mine on the 17th of July and she said it would not be released until the 24th. However, they did say that my iPod case and wired remote/ear buds would be shipping today!!!!!

is jaguar in the two lower end power macs right now that ship in 2-3 days or just the high end which ships in 6-8 weeks. I'm curious since i'm moving into my dorm on the 24th.

Hi, I got this from Apple UK today...

>> Unfortunately the expected release date for Mac OS 10.2 is 24th August and
we will be unable to dispatch it before that date. It will however be sent
by post so that it will reach you as soon as possible- just a little more
time to wait! <<

I certainly hope that they mail it before the 24th so we GET IT on the 24th!

i ordered it on the phone today along with idvd 2 upgrade. i said, so will they ship separately or do i have to wait til the 24th when jag ships? she ignored the date and just said they would ship one at a time... "idvd upgrade will be out in a couple days and jaguar... late august"

doesn't mean a whole lot. but if they were so bound to the 24th, why didn't she say it? unless... they won't even be able to get all of them out (the ones that have been ordered so far) by then. ie, they'd be even later perhaps....?

just a thought

I ordered mine on the 17th too ... no sign of shipment as yet (dammit), although I wouldn't go by what the reps are saying ... they're notoriously misinformed. I remember calling about my just-arrived copy of 10.1 last year and being informed that I couldn't possibly be in possession of it as it hadn't shipped yet.

awrc
Aug 14, 2002, 02:30 PM
I'm gonna guess that anyone who actually *asks* is going to be told that it won't ship until the 24th, simply because if Apple officially stated it was shipping before that date their phone lines would be jammed with people wanting to know why their copy hadn't shipped yet.

However, with it turning up in new machines and the reports of people's orders having shipped (and shipments already being made to resellers in preparation for the 24th) I suspect that unofficially, off the record, they're going to get at least some copies out early to people, just to spread the shipping load out a bit (i.e. so they don't end up having to ship every single pre-ordered copy on the 24th which, being a Saturday, would mean trailer after trailer full of stuff sitting waiting for Fedex pickup until Monday).

I use an iBook (500MHz, 384MB RAM) and am currently using 10.2. It runs really fast on here, much faster than 10.1.5. Everything is quicker, tho I do notice a slight slowdown on boot.. but having to reboot is rare unless I install software that requires it. I'll never go back to 10.1. Apple did an awesome job on this one!!

I'm running it on a Blue & White G3 that has been upgraded to a G4/500 with ATA 100 and 768MB of RAM.

The BAD:
My XLR8 Mach Speed software is unable to load/run. Given the company's status, I doubt that I'll see an update. I have no way of knowing the status of my card or its cache, though it is apparently running at 500MHz with 1MB of cache according to Apple Profile.

Jaguar has the worst Happy Mac Screen EVER. The screen is soooo bad....how bad is it? The Happy Mac Screen is so bad...I have the urge to damage my hardware in hopes of getting a Sad Mac Screen instead of having to look at the new Happy Mac Screen.

MacReporter doesn't work, but the author says he's going to release an update soon.

It feels faster, but MOX Optimize doesn't run (even after I installed the BSD Subsystem). And much of what is supposed to make Jaguar faster was already enabled in MOX, so it only really feels faster in a few other situations. The upgrade to 10.1 seemed like more of a speed bump....of course those of you who can do Quartz Extreme are going to be much further accelerated.

Show Info now goes back to the old method of opening a new window for each item. I liked it better when it would only open one window.

What happened to Dock Scraps? In very early versions of Jaguar, you could drag minimized items out of the Dock and onto the Desktop.

Still no Window Shade.

It would be nice if you could right click on the Finder Icon in the Dock and select "Hide Others".

THE OK:
I use Office vX, so the Mail.app improvements are meaningless. iCalendar is meaningless. I use iView Media Pro, so iPhoto is meaningless. I use Proteus so iChat is meaningless. I use Watson, so the new Sherlock is meaningless, but I like some of Sherlock better than Watson...I have a feeling I may end up switching to Sherlock as more modules are developed for it. The Desktop randomizer sucks compared to the free 3rd party app, ChangeDesktop.

In short, I'm not a big fan of any of the iApps, except iTunes. These new iApps are supposed to be a big part of the $129. Hmmm....I would be more inclined to pay $129 for Apple *not* to release apps that are going to compete with superior 3rd party apps.

THE GOOD:
Faster in things that were problems in the past, like dealing with windows that had lots of files. Other minor cosmetic tweaks really improve things. Networking is really kick ass.

The new calculator totally rocks. The new Flurry Screen Saver. Search and Find in the Toolbar.

HEY! I have the same machine with just about the same upgrade....(though mine is a 550 ZIF chip, and not an ata card)

So i'm hoping my experience is a little different.

>the Search and Find in the Toolbar may be worth $20 of the upgrade, that's going to kick it here in the office!

Cheers It's two full version CD's w/an upgrade option on them. So you can do either clean or full installs. There is no sole upgrade option. Everyone has to pay upmteen dollars.

I don't think Apple charges your credit card until it ships. I pre-ordered Warcraft 3 about 3 weeks before it was to be released and my credit card was not charged until it was shipped.

I also have preordered Jaguar and my credit card has yet to be charged (also with education discount).

I guess that it is so that if people decide they don't want to get the product after all, Apple doesn't have to go to the credit card company and cancel the charge. They just have to delete your order.

Think he ment the CD's that are being included with the current shipping macs which have 10.1.5 installed and Jaguar discs thrown in, Apple in the past has only included upgrade cd's, not the full install versions.

So to any lucky person out there...are the jaguar cd's full version, or updaters, I suspect full versions in this case :)

When I installed 10.1.5 to my existing 10.1.4 I just downloaded it and it ran automatically off of the apple website. When I am installing Jaguar 10.2 into my system, will I want to do a clean install, or an upgrade install? Just checking, because when I did an upgrade on OS 8 to OS 8.6 on my old powermac 8500, I think I did it incorrectly, so I want to make sure I don't lose any data when I install my Jagwire (on August 24th) on my new powerbook G4 (still pissed that I have have to pay the full price considering I bought the thing only 2 1/2 months ago).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Either one should be fine, but to be safest, I would recommend a "clean" install.

Backup your documents, and format your hard drive for a sparkling clean 10.2 install. It should give you better performance than an upgrade.

You lost data on your 8500 because 8.5 was a stand alone version, seperate from OS 8. Therefore, you can't update to 8.6 unless you have 8.5. (There was no 8.2, 8.3, and 8.4)

But as long as you have a recent version of OS X 10.1, 10.2 should install just fine.

Have a nice day! :D

that is most companies' policy...

for instance, what if you ordered a new dp 1.25... it would suck to have it charged before you were even close to getting it.. unless you wanted it that way so you could pay it off before you got it, then say "well, now i can spend some money on those dual 23" displays"...

Same here - my wife just got a "partial shipment" notice for the two copies of Jaguar that we've ordered. It appears that they've charged for the overnight shipping, but that the copies of Jaguar haven't actually shipped.

How do you ship an abstract concept like overnight shipping? Is this some sort of zen thing?

I really hope Monday (or a post from someone who is willing to wait out Apple's lengthy phone queue) gives more insight into what's going on.

I'm secretly hoping it's something like "we've charged that part because it's in a trailer awaiting pickup by Fedex (since Apple pack their own trailers, I believe) so we've charged the shipping, but we won't actually charge for the software until the Fedex truck takes the trailer away on Monday"

Alternatively, since the official line is that Jaguar doesn't ship until the 24th, maybe they *are* shipping them out, but won't actually charge for the software part until the 24th (since you couldn't have a copy before that date, because it doesn't ship until then, so any box and CD you may possess is doubtless a figment of your imagination). If it's this, I wish they'd at least give us a tracking number for my figment.

I just rang the AppleStore and cancelled my order. As I'm getting a new iBook anyway, I'll have a copy soon enough (though Apple UK said 10.2 wouldn't be included with the iBook), but I'm waiting until they announce the "family pricing", as I've got several machines and it sounds like a much better deal. I only hope that buying a new Mac gives you a discount on the OS.

I guess I know what I'll be doing on Tuesday (or maybe Wednesday - there was some uncertainty about whether all orders would get picked up on Monday or not).

Wouldn't those of you with more than one Mac prefer to wait till Apple confirms the $199 5-licence package, which they're supposed to do by the 24th anyway? I've written to them for confirmation, but of course I have heard nothing. I'd rather be legal on four machines for $199 than on one for $129.

If I was having to pay full price, yes. However, my wife's a local government employee and thus qualifies for the Government EPP pricing, which is $64.50 a copy. Since we have just two machines, it's about the same cost as a single license. Maybe there'll be Government EPP pricing for the 5-licence package too, but I'm willing to pay a little extra to get it sooner :D

But there's no mention of it anywhere else on the Site. How weird is that?

One of my two copies of the single license for OS 10.2 has SHIPPED according to Apple Sales and Apple Website. I tried to cancel it yesterday and today...but it was too late.

I canceled my second copy and ordered the family license...I prob wont get this until the next week..

As for the one that's shipped...I'll have to call Apple AGAIN when it gets here to get the RMA number.

I spent 1 hr on the phone with the Apple Sales # yesterday and another hour today...I'm not exactly having a 'wonderful apple experience'...

I'm going to have to return the OS X 10.2 single copy and wait now maybe up to a week for the family version...which really sucks.

Oh well, so maybe I won't get it until Friday after all. Still, it's good to see that Apple's making sure people who pre-ordered it get it by the release date, rather than waiting until the release date to start the shipping process - I'd previously been expecting it not to actually ship until the 26th.

...not having a wonderful apple experience....

Yeah I admit, it is great that they are making sure that the people (like me) who pre-orderd it...will infact have it on the day its 'released'.

However, for people (like me) who have multiple systems and who made multiple orders...the inability to cancel them and order the family licensing...have cost me time on the phone with Apple (two hours on hold over the past 2 days) and a ton of frustrations...

And on top of that...I'll have to ship the OS back to them when it returns for a refund and still probably wont have the family licensing until the week AFTER because that was only ordered this weekend (as oppossed to when I made my first order the day of the Apple Expo).

So you can see...why...I'm less than thrilled and am not having a wonderful apple experience...

Just wanted to let you guys know our OS X situations in Japan.

It will be released on August 24 just like in any other parts of the world, but the good news (for me!) is that Japan Standard Time is about 13 hours ahead of EST. Yes, baaaaby! Huh, but I guess some stores in the states will release them at Zero AM???

Apple does not have official Apple stores in Japan. But it has announced that three major Apple computer retailers in the heart of Tokyo will host count-down events with Jaguar T-shirts giveaway at 10:02 AM on 24th. The stores will include Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku, Laox Mac-kan in Akihabara and Sofmap in Yurakucho.

Considering how crazy the OS X public beta event was in Tokyo, there could be some long-long line of people in front of these stores that morning.

I placed my order weeks ago for the up-to-date program ($19.95, for "shipping fee"). I was just told by customer service, those discs will be shipped by regular mail "when the product is in stock."

I guess those of us who were able to get in on that deal won't get Jaguar by this weekend. :(

I shouldn't complain, since I'm not paying the full $129, but it would have been cool to get it sooner rather than later.

Anyone else heard about how the up-to-date program is working?

Tim

I was told when I ordered mine that it would ship 'within 24 hours of release date via regular USPS mail.' I'm taking that to mean the 23rd since the 24 is a Saturday.

Go check you order status everyone. 10.2 is partially shipping.

I think thats bull. I think it is fully shipping and then want it to seem like a suprise.

Did you all get the email clarifying that the other day?

...cant wait to get it rocking on my beige G3 266

I got the email and mine says the same thing. The problem that I have is that my credit card has only been billed for $5.30, which by the email that they sent me was the expected shipping cost. Is anyone else getting this?

Sorry Skunk...but don't expect 10.2 to be loaded on your machine. If you are lucky you MIGHT have the upgrade CD included in your pack but unless your machine was manufactured VERY recently you will have 10.1.4 loaded on it.

Came with 10.1.4 loaded and 2 Jaguar upgrade discs. You have to load/restore 10.1.4 before you can upgrade. The second CD is just additional drivers. The security update downloads fast but takes a long while to "process".

Anybody make it to an Apple Store Friday night?

I got to the Palo Alto store around 10:40pm. The line was ENORMOUS! There were easily over 1000 people in line when I got there, other people I talked to thought it was closer to 2000+. It was pretty cool, but you really had to be an addict (geek?) to stay the course, but seemed like everyone did. I don't remember seeing anyone drop out of the line, even though the last of the line didn't get through the door around 1:30am, which was only about 10 minutes behind me.

The store ran out of the Family Packs, but there was plenty of single user copies to go around.

It was a LONG night, but it was fun. Just wondering what it was like an any of the other stores?
