I see an ipod touch for sale for $70 with the following description:

Ipod (2nd generation). The screen is cracked and the back has normal wear scratches. Here is why I am selling it, everything was working fine untill i tryed to update it to the new Os4. The new operating system update that apple set out. It completely wiped out my ipod and the only screen i keep getting is the usb connection and the itunes icon. i dont know what to do with it.

Would anyone know if this would be an easy fix or not? I'm trying to find a used one for my kids and wondered about buying this or not. Thank you.

I guess it all depends, since it happened on the update doing a full restore or putting it in DFU mode might fix it, then you would have to buy a new screen. I guess it's worth a try for $70, if that doesnt work you could probably sell it on eBay for a profit.

Thank you very much. If there is a screen protector on it, the screen may last for a bit.

Would it have to go to an Apple store to get a new screen?

What is DFU?

all you need to do is put it in DFU mode and recovery it manually.

there are tons of guides on here to do it.

I still would recommend installing a new screen.

You could send it there but you wouldn't have too. You could buy a new screen off of ebay and install by yourself with a repair kit, i'll post links if you want.

DFU stands for Device Firmware Upgrade/Update, so it fits perfectly. You should probably just put it in DFU and then do a full restore.

The screen shouldn't cost more than $50, i would actually say about $25, so you got yourself a pretty good deal.

Never mind, if you can fix it, you can get a 16gb 2nd gen ipod touch for under 100 bucks.

Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r5IPWwq0Ng&feature=related

I'm guessing it'll take a half-hour at the most because he took 4 minutes.

Thanks for the info and help. What do you mean by "never mind....."? I've never seen an ipod for under $100 before!

Sorry about that---I went for a walk with my kids. I was waiting for the guy to reply to me and he did. So, now my husband is on his way to pick it up since he was already out running errands and was about 1/2 way there.

So, we shall see what happens and I'll update here when I know. Oh, it was craigslist I saw it on. Thank you again!

Thank you. It DID go well!

I would like to thank both you and MacModMachine for your help---I REALLY appreciate it. This forum is a wonderful resource.

I did put it into DFU mode and tried 2 or 3 times to restore it but because I had the OS 4, it wouldn't work. Kept saying error 1611 I believe it was.

So, I did look through the other threads here and downloaded the 3.1.2 firmware and did a restore from that and it worked, praise God!!!

I am so very grateful!!!

I don't know if I'll be brave enough to try to replace the screen myself or not yet. I'm just glad it worked and I didn't lose out on $$$! Thanks again!

Awesome! You might take it to Apple to replace the screen, but i guess a screen protector would be a temporary fix. Here's a cheap one if you haven't got one already: http://cgi.ebay.com/LCD-Screen-Protector-iPod-Touch-2nd-3rd-Gen-/110512958468?cmd=ViewItem&pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item19bb15ec04

Right now, you got and ipod touch for under $100! But it all depends on how much Apple charges to change the screen if you dont yourself.
