windows on the mac...and file sharing!

i have a question for any avid file sharers or virtual pc people. what programs do you use to download music and movies? i've been using carracho and hotline for years and have gotten many good things, but the vast selection (for audio and movies) is not quite there. can you run say " kazaa" on virtual pc? (well i'm sure you can) but how does it work out? Has anyone tried this method for getting files? i was using open ag and sputnix bet they are no longer working... anyones experiences or thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

VPC SUCKS!! Limewire isnt as good as Kazaa, but its OSX native... use it.

I ran WinMX on VPC and boy was it slow.....I could compare it to downloading with dial up.

I used to run hotline but after all that password crap, I stopped. Limewire and Acquisition are alright.... from what i've seen non of Mac programs for P2P File sharing can compete with their PC counterparts

The only thing I use a PC for is games and downloading....

I've tried LimeWire but the speeds aren't great. I've had better luck with an app called Aquisition.

i've used limewire too, but it really just isn't good. could someone try kazaa in vpc and see what happens? i'm trying to convince a friend that apples are alright and he's pretty excited. and he wants to get an imac, but he wants to be able to download and download and download....who doesn't? any advice?

i set up a VPC on my 800 mhz iMac to run kazaa, winmx, and soulseek

download times seemed to be at, or slightly less than their mac equivalents, but vpc is SOOOOOOO slow that just doing basic interface stuff had me banging my head

thankfully, soulseek has been ported to unix and runs perfecty stable in XDarwin on Mac OS X. i suggest you check out soulseek if youre looking for a great file-sharing app. (www.slsk.org has some basic info)

for the unix port, go to http://www.sensi.org/~ak/pyslsk/

do NOT follow the OS X instructions, as they require very unstable alpha ports of python and wxpython, follow the UNIX instructions (make sure you have XDarwin and Fink installed) and you should be up and running

if youre using os 9 i cant help ya ;]

unfortunately, soulseek requires you to register before using, which can only be done from the windows client... once you have your username and password though, you can go ahead and use the unix client without problems

hey.. ive ran kazaa.. the dl speeds are aight.. but it is a pain to use it cause its really pretty slow..

however, i ran it with windows 2000, which is presumably slower than win98 or ME..

Is there any reason not to install XDarwin? It's not going to slow down/hinder/crash my computer, is it? This sounds like a good proggy, but I don't want to kill the computer.

If you are really patient, you can use Kazaa and whatnot thru VPC. The d/l speeds aren't so bad (except for me, at school, where they have it limited to about .1 k/sec :mad:). It just takes forever to navigate around in the program. Especially under OS X, although it has been getting better.

No not at all. It's just a GUI for Darwin.. I think. Gosh if I'm wrong I guess I'm pretty stupid. Anyways the point is... no it won't ruin ur comp.

I tried to install XDarwin once, but I had no idea what I was doing and managed to partially install it (or something like that, I really have no idea what happened). But in the end, tho it didn't work, everything else ran just as well as before. You should be fine (but don't take my word for it ;)).

Well I have Fern. get it at versiontracker. It's still in development but so far it kicks ass.

Much better than limewire or acquisition.:o

Try using Neo for Kaaza downloading, and Acquisition/Fern for Gnutella sharing and downloading.

To be honest, I could never get the "Kaaza Compatible" programs to work under VPC (I was using Win98) on two separate installs....
so, you should try and see if it installs under your VPC first.

PS Win95 works real real fast in VPC, if its slow, make sure you have the newest version, cause it's much faster than the original for OS X.

pretty much all p2p apps completely and totally suck. i stick to newsgroups because they arent flooded with the CRAP that these p2p comps are.

You should definitely install XDarwin.

The great advantage of OS X is you can use all these great open-source UNIX apps on your Mac... why not take advantage of it?

I can assure you it wont mess up your system. If you're worried about uninstalling it, install it with the fink tools (either use fink to download and compile xfree86, or use apt-get to install the binaries)... if you decide you dont want it, simply type "fink remove system-xfree86" and it will take care of all the loose ends for you.

Can't go wrong with X Windows. ;]

I run kazaa on win2k on VPC. Now the interface is slow, which more or less sucks. Everything works fine no speed difference. Biggest problem I have is VPC freezing up after a period of time. I have to Force quit it and then i can;t start it again until i restart the entire computer. Go figure. Other then that i have noticed littleif any problems

From my file sharing experiences I would have to recommend LimeWire. THe newest version is a lot better then the previous versions, and it is the best OS X native client out there. Carracho is okay but only for very specific things. Messing with all the servers and passwords is to annoying for me - but im not to patient :D. Some peeps hate LimeWire, but it is the best out there. I am waiting for someone to develope Kaaza for X. I have never used it, but from what I have heard, it is the best out there.
