ipod problems

my ipod has now a major problem
i pluged it in after not charging it for a few days and it started up and came up with what loooks to be a directory malfunction. its kinda a folder with a warning sign next to it. it wont come up as a hard drive, so idk how to fix it. hope you guys can help
