I love to listen to music as I fall asleep, but you've gotta have the right music or it will keep you up.
Here are some artists I've listened to in the past while going to sleep (and particularly soothing songs by them):
Lauryn Hill (So Much Things to Say, Selah)
Nelly Furtado (Scared of you)
Mariah Carey (Looking In, Daydream Interlude, Underneath the Stars)
Enya (anything by her ;))
Norah Jones (anything by her)
Kidney Theives (Serene Dream)
Trapt (stories acoustic live performance)
techno
I know that it seems weird to listen to techno as you go to bed, but it really helps me go to sleep. I think it's because it is so structured. Or maybe techno sucks so much that it puts me to sleep. Whatever the case, it helps me sleep.

I am normally subjected to the traumatising screams of the voices in my head.
Why do they come to me to die ??
So nothin really. Just a subtle mix of silence, light-range street sounds, the night breeze through trees and the rain on the roof; all of which can be rhythmical in it's own right.

I have to listen to my wife's "noise box"
That and the whirring of the ceiling fan
And the snoring... oh, the snoring!

Usually, I like total silence when I sleep... but lately I've put on some music:
Air - Virgin Suicides Soundtrack
The Red Garland Quintet - All Mornin' Long
John Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio - Traneing In

Honestly, just about everything. I put my iPod on shuffle, and it chooses from my list of 2,500 songs.
I listen to almost any kind of music, but it does tend to keep me awake, rather than sleep.

Silence, generally.
Tonight, though, I'm on the Red Bull, glued ot the BBC webcast of the US Election... it's going to be a very long one.

It's really hard for me to go to sleep with constant sounds- music or noise. I thought the buzzing of my digital clock was bad, I've actually moved into a new room in my house over this summer, and now I've got the digital clock, AND a new analog wall clock that ticks louder than the buzzing.
I've tried going to sleep with classical radio playing, but it just kept me up, much to my chagrin.
Occasionally I have listened to Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume 2 while lying in bed. The title's a dead ringer, eh? I'd suggest that album to anyone who doesn't have a problem going to sleep with music.
I've also listened to Fantômas' Delirium Côrdia in bed. It's creepy enough that it has been known to give people nightmares, but all it does is make me feel slightly uneasy. I managed to fall asleep near the middle.

I sleep in a sleeping porch at my house with ten other guys. Since the window next to my bed is right beneath our outside porch, I often go to sleep with the sound of rain on the porch, which is cool. Occasionally I go to sleep with the sound of snoring.

A recording of ocean waves ... I've been doing that for some years now. It was mainly to cover up our dogs breathing, sorting and snoring sounds. Then, when I'm on the road for business, I can diminish the background sounds of the people next door or traversing the hallways.
Lately it's been Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland
WassermusiK by Händel
The Four Seasons
almost anything by Bach
Although classical only makes up about 10% of my iTunes library, it is the only thing I can go to sleep with. I didn't used to listen to music before bed, but I find that I sleep a lot better if I do. There's nothing better than curling up in bed with a good book and my iPod!

classical does it for me to. i enjoy aaron copland as well as debussey and chopin. i really like debussey though. i have a little over 5000 songs in my collection and i'd say 15% is classical music. it helps me focus and so i listen to a lot of classsical music at work or when i'm reading.
what also does it for me is hawaiian music. not the hokey stuff like don ho (not to diss don ho) but traditional hawaiian music. nothing like soothing guitar and hawaiian melodies. some of my fav hawaiian artists are israel kamakawiwole, keali'i reichel and hapa. there's a whole bunch more that i can't think of right now. very, very relaxing music and i highly recommend if you need to unwind.
