actually scratch my earlier report, 5870 gives output on both ports without x3000. Dvi to Hdmi also works. Just no QECI.
atyinit from #70, my binimage
With the ATY from #70, if it works like mine, the blue screen will EVENTUALLY (a few minutes) break into "The Desktop" which will be a mass of squares. AT a glacial pace, one square after another will be re-drawn with noisy black mess.
The one I emailed was an attempt to Init the card a completely other way. Netkas spent hours redoing it but when he got issues resolved, still no luck.
Where are those 10.6.5 seeds?

So, did anyone ever find unreleased drivers for the 4870 right before it came out with the 2009 MP? If so, how long after the find were they available? If not, well, crap.

When I copied over the drivers to S/L/E, I now get a KP.
It doesn't seem to matter if ATY_INT is in there or not. Seems to be a dependency issue, but it doesn't make sense. Ideas? Please help :D

Interesting info.
I am going to have a look to see if those files have newer versions in the Mini disk image we found rest of drivers on.
It would make sense that if those files don't have references to new cards/drivers, they would not know how to deal with.
Unfortunately, the fact that several folks have perfectly running 5870s on Hacks seems to say that ultimately these files aren't crucial to success.
SInce you have a Hack, you should post at InsanelyMac. Your luck will be better there.
Meanwhile, back at my 10th floor tenement, I couldn't STAND not knowing if that AGPM / MacPro 4,1 thing was important. So, I stuffed BOTH hands down the couch cushions, grabbed ALL of the change I could grab, and bought a 4,1 Mac Pro.
And no, it didn't make any stinking difference. Still runs EXACTLY the same, but now IOReg Explorer actually shows BOTH of the control strings, the ones my 1,1 showed, and the ones the 4,1 hack showed.
If Netkas can think of any 1,1 vs 4,1 tests that might help, I'll do them.

Thanks to everyone for getting ATI5xxx support moving so quickly.
My HD5850 is working fine with one major issue. The displayport won't output anything and it's where my main monitor goes (Apple Cinema Display with adapter from mini-dp to displayport).
I've tried Vervet, Eulemur and Uakari and none of these will wake up the displayport with the current drivers. Eulemur won't output anything, and Vervet and Uakari only talk to the main DVI port.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to get the displayport output going ? either alone or with a DVI monitor also connected ?
Is this something that later drivers might fix ? should I try more framebuffers, or other hackery ?
Edit: This is a hackintosh btw

Tim to try different framebuffers
go down the list and switch out all 6 or 7 instances of each name and keep records of which ports work.
Quite often having a DVI to VGA adapter on one DVI port will enable one of the other digital ports. Ideally you would have 2 or or 3 of same monitor. Frequently the EDID doesn't get matched to port it actually got read from.
So try each name out, but try different combos of ports, whatever you can do. But do try each port via DVI and then plug in a DVI to VGA adapter. Can be Apple's or a cheapy. Just has to trigger "Hot Plug Detect"

Lol, AMD just confirmed Radeon 6000 series is coming in a few months. So much for mac pro getting in on the latest graphics.
"In the second half of the year, we expect GPU demand to remain healthy and supply constraints to ease. We remain on track to bolster our GPU leadership with the introduction of our second generation DX11 graphics products, later this year."

I doubt it is the 6000 series, but a mid-life refresh of the 5000s. Expect things like the 5875...

nope, next generation, HD 6000.
"ATI’s add-in-card partner, Hightech Information System, better known as HIS, has revealed knowledge of the ATI Radeon HD 6000 series (thought to be codenamed Southern Islands) launch, saying that the next-gen GPUs will be due out by Q4 2010, and that they would follow with their own partner cards in Q1 2011."

The earth would explode if Apple ever included anything other than a year-old graphics card in their products.
Anyways, it will be interesting to see what kind of hardware the 6000 series is, considering all of the rumors (RUMORS, mind you! RUMORS!!11!) saying that the 6000 series will just be a slight tweaking of the 5000s. Plus... the apparent fact that the 6000s will be released sometime later this year, but the 28nm boards won't be ready until 2011.

Something tells me we WILL worry about it.
Sounds like equivalent of the 4870 moving to 4890. A double edged sword for us. Slightly faster once flashed for Mac Pro, but INFINITELY more bother.
I look forward to the (hopefully) coming day when I can use a 5870 in either of my Pros, but it will stink if just as we figure out 5870, the 5890/6xxx equiv shows up and the remaining 5870 start getting cheaper/nonreference parts / boards and we start the who;e "try to keep them working" game again.
Here's hoping we have SOME 5xxx series working BEFORE the replacement hits the market.

1. No such card as 5800
2. whichever card you have, you probably need to try different frame buffers
3. This is an actual Mac site with not much useful info for Hacksters
4. Insanely Mac or Netkas.org are only places you will likely find useful info.
But you're gonna hafta figure out which card you have first.

Eyefinity seems like it's mainly for gaming on the PC. I doubt this is something that Apple wanted to target. Apple does however heavily advertise the fact that it supports three outputs.
Three outputs is exactly what I'm looking for... I get to slim down from two power hungry cards (GTX285+GTS250) to a single to support my tri-monitor setup! :)

Yup, still using it. Bear in mind that I'm not using a Mac Pro though. My machine's an i7 hackintosh.
It's still working great though. The only issue I have is that the XFX ROM doesn't have the 2560x1600 VESA resolution built in so when Chameleon loads it displays at a low resolution. Unfortunately this means that when OSX boots up my display isn't initialised - a problem I had with my 4870s too. Unplugging the display and plugging it back in sorts it right out but another workaround I've found is that it does initialise the screen if the screen goes to sleep so for now I've got my screen sleep time set to one minute so all I have to do is wait one minute after booting up and then I can use it.
That may sound like a hassle but I don't reboot much and when I do I usually need to go pee or make a cup of tea anyway and it's much less hassle than having to move my computer to unplug and replug the cable.
The workaround with my 4870s was to have Chameleon start up with the 2560x1600 resolution. That way OSX wouldn't need to change the resolution and I could bypass the issue. This only works with VESA supported resolutions though. I'm hoping that when 5xxx Mac bioses start to float around that the Rominator will be able to create a 5970 bios using them and that they may have the VESA resolution for the 30" ACD.

Heyyo,
I hope this helps, it's an IOReg dump from my hackintosh notebook with ATi 5650 Mobility in it so maybe someday in the future I can have a widescreen resolution on my notebook. :)
At the time I did have aty_int.kext loaded, not the ati5000controller.kext or anything cause those just cause my screen to blank or get stuck on text in verbose mode, or corrupt my display.

Sorry if I'm being dense, but do you have any idea how to go about initializing the new drivers on a 'genuine' Mac? I've been searching all over but the only reasonable answer I can find is reflashing, while I've read some reports of people running it without doing so (on a non-hack).

Ha, that is a good idea. Alas I already use all my corners and don't really want to reset them to something else. I did try briefly looking for a way to put the screen to sleep with a terminal command but alas I could find nothing.

It's currently not possible. Poor Rominator has been banging his head against a wall for the past few weeks trying to get 5xxx series working on genuine macs. Unfortunately it looks like genuine Mac Pro users will have to wait for the BIOS files to leak. That should start pretty soon though. Once the iMac's 5670 and 5750 rom files get leaked by some willing donors then EFI enabled ROM files with which to flash 5xxx series PC cards should be just around the corner.
