This is a persistent problem that happens about as frequent as a priest violates a child, but it happens.

The screen will go black for about 1-2 seconds, then all normalcy is established.

Any idea of what this could be/mean?

Its been happening to mine too, White Macbook (late 2007 model) changed the battery but not use. Randomly screen shuts as if going to sleep mode. :mad:

Just given it to the Apple service folks, let us see what they have to say.

Just carefully asking if you perhaps enabled "Blank screen" hot corners? If your mouse gets into one of the configured hot corners the screen will blank but light up again as you continue moving your mouse.
