ftp Connection issues

I am having a lot of troubles with a number of websites. I cannot connect. I have tried various applications on various accounts. Accounts I used to be able to connect to and nothing has changed but now I can't connect. I've tried dreamweaver, ftp clients such as forklift and filezilla. nothing. Then if I go to my laptop and use the same information I can connect fine. This is leading me to believe that something is off with my main computer but I have no idea how to begin to troubleshoot.

Is your firewall on? (it should be ;))

If so, it could be indiscriminately blocking incoming connections...

But then again, this is ftp - if a direction connection can't be made, FTP clients usually revert to passive mode to get around firewalls.

But, they might not be. Anyway, look into that first. :p

Click on "Advanced"

Is "Block all incoming connections" ticked? Untick it (obviously) if it is.

Otherwise, look through that list, see if your FTP applications are listed there and if it says to "Block incoming connections" for those apps.

Automatically allowed is selected. I don't see anything on the list that has to do with my ftp applications.

Hmmm.. Try turning the firewall off temporarily, and run your FTP application of choice. If it doesn't work, then it isn't the firewalls fault - I should've suggested this in the first place, whoops.

doesn't work when the firewall is off either. Should I be seeing my ftp client on the list cuz I'm not

Not really, since if the firewall detects the application, then it'll ask you if you want to add it to the list. It seems like it's not even getting to the stage where it'll ask you.

But i suppose it wouldn't hurt to see what happens if you manually add your applications. Just click the '+' and look for your FTP client. Of course, tell it to Allow incoming connections.

Also, what happens when you try use your browser to look through ftp directories? You haven't included that in your list of stuff you've tried.

by using my browser do you mean, like through godaddy's ftp? that works.
