I've been trying to figure out why I'm so bummed about Bush being re-elected. It's not like I'm a huge Kerry fan. I truthfully neither like or dislike him. I think he's too stiff and distanced from the populace, although I like many of his stances. But I just hate that Bush won. Then I realized why:
This is a huge Republican victory. House, Senate, President, Supreme Court appointments. Why do I hate that so much? Because the Republican party wants to tell me what to do. They want to tell everyone what to do.
They want to impose their morality on the entire populace. They want to make sure that everyone behaves the way they think is "right". They want to ensure "group think", not individuality. They want to say who can be with whom, and how people can live their lives, and how they're allowed to treat their illnesses.
They want to impose this on the whole world, and any disagreement from elsewhere is treated with disdain (oh, how we respected the French position on Iraq....).
Democrats do this to businesses. As someone who will never be a wealthy business owner, this won't affect me. Republicans let businesses do whatever the hell they want, even to the extent that their environmental policies outrage me, and I own an SUV (two, until getting a minivan recently). But they won't let people do what they want.
And they want to monitor us. Keep tabs on us. Watch our every move.
You know, I'm not a big Democrat. But the Democrats leave me alone. The Republicans won't. And that, I've decided, is why I'm so upset.
