That's a pretty cool little trick....if I had an iPod, I think I'd make one of those.

But the fact that they have to do this only brings home the fact that Apple needs to work on a better power source, or one that is removable/swappable.

I would have been more impressed if the Altoids WERE the power source :D

(Also, few other players have a swappable power source--and yet few are as compact as the iPod with the same GB and nice screen/controls. Plus I never saw the big deal about having to put the iPod in the charger every night instead of every other. How many people REALLY need 15+ hours of music away from a power source?)

yeah, that's been well discussed.

- Battery life is up to 15 hours, almost double of my (3G fat boy) ipod
- Batteries are user-replaceable if you have a tiny screwdriver. The tight design of the ipod excludes niceties like being able to have the battery near the surface, under a battery door.
- They only need replacements like every year and a half.
- You can always plug in a can of altoids, and if you're really in a pinch, I suppose you could make one of those mister wizard batteries out of a couple of potatos and a firewire wire.

(in fact, perhaps i should be the first to recharge my ipod with a few dozen potatos.

True--I shouldn't perpetuate the myth of non-replaceable iPod batteries! They ARE replaceable, and available cheaply from several sources, some of which do the swap for you.

They just aren't the kind of thing you'd swap casually in the middle of a 30-hour non-stop jog.

What a MacGyver ... cool. But if people say it fry's your iPods, then it's not so MacGyver.
