Can't Boot From Firewire HD

I bought a 160GB HD and a Macally external firewire enclosure, and for some reason I cannot boot OS X on it. I get the "prohibited" symbol. I tried booting into verbose mode, but it never reached a prompt and said something like "blahblahIOFirewireSupport has no kernel dependency" and other similar lines.

I've been googling for hours and wonder if it's possible that the HD is not OS X bootable? It's a standard Samsung 7200 160GB HD. I've reinstalled several times with no succes. Would diskwarrior help?

(it boots OS 9 just fine, and i'm using a Dual USB iBook)

What version of 10? I've only heard of this happening with a newer computer and an older OS. Hold down option at startup and then select the correct disk. I've gotten stuff to work though that.

If you bought the drive and put it in the enclosure, chances are that it was not HFS+ formatted. You may be able to install OS X on the drive, but if it's not the right format it wouldn't boot. Did you have to format the drive when you used it the first time?
