So I came home to hear my macpro with a loud fan noise. I found out it was my 4870 making the super load fan noise and the red light that is on the card was on.

With the rumors of the new graphics cards coming out i'm stuck. So now do I either buy the gtx 285 or wait for the new cards to come out.

This sucks :/

Before running out to buy a new card, why don't you see if you can have it repaired 'cheaper', in these tough economic times? Your local repair man will like it, and so will your wallet. :apple:

Call me crazy but where can I take my card to have it repaired?

Magical Fairy Land?

90+ % of dead video cards are exactly that.

If you can see a cap knocked off somewhere, or some component blackened and burned, maybe. But even that sometimes proves to only be the symptom, not the problem.

Can you buy a cheaper video card for the time being until Apple brings out the new Mac Pro?
I think there's a 50/50 chance Apple will bring out the next Mac Pro within 5 years.

But there is a 60% chance that the Mac compatible GTX 480 and ATI 5XXX will come out within 2 years (or after the next generation is out).

He can get one of the fancy GT120 Pro cards until then.

To the OP: Is there any chance it's still under AppleCare? Perhaps an obvious question, but sometimes we tend to forget some basic stuff when stuff happens.... Good Luck...

Sheesh, aren't you an optimistic cynic?? :)

I'm just going to buy the gtx 285. I can always sell it if the new ones come out.
