hackintosh from off the shelf PC - possible?

OK - I don't know anything about hackintoshes. Used Macs for the last 20 years. But I've seen plenty of threads now with PC parts being mentioned. And the fact you can purchase the equivalent MacPro performance wise PC from Dell for under half the MP price.

Be gentle!! - Can someone please explain the difference between a HT and the Buying the Dell (or whatever) equivalent and installing OSX. What's the grey area in between?

An education would be very much appreciated.

Can't really tell which dell computer is hackable but most cases you can install OSX if you choose intel CPUs. I put OSX on my Thinkstation but had to try for many times to make it fully working.

Build your own instead, Dell is also overpriced for what you get. As stridemat said, take a look at InsanelyMac, there are great guides and recommended components. The downside is that an update might broke it so do your research before updating or just don't, if everything works, there is no reason to.

How about building a dual-socket beast (EVGA SR-2) with overclocked X5650/60/70/80 and then use VMware or virtual box 3.2?

I would love to know if dedicating 14 or 15 (out of 16) physical cores and 46 (out of 48) GB memory would give you a killer machine or would you lose a lot of speed through the virtualization?
