My photos from our recent vacation were accidentally deleted from my Canon S400 Camera before I was able to import them into iPhoto. Is there any software that will recover the photos? Canon cameras do not mount for disk use like Nikon and some of the other cameras do. In order to recover the images, would I first need to purchase a USB or firewire compact flash reader/writer since there is no direct disc access?

I was reading on dpreview.net (I think) about a program that can recover images from damaged memory cards.

Dunno if that helps ............

I feel your pain as I've just lost about a hundred pictures from my holiday thanks to a dodgy compact flash card from crucial. I got two cards at the same time from them about a month ago and they're both junk.

I never lost any pics but i was testing a program so that if i ever lost any pics i could get it back. I forgot the name of that program but i found this:

http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/digitalphotorescue/ and
http://www.eprovided.com/digital-image-recovery.html

use this link to find more:

The orgram i tested was on a PC and it worked great, i took 40 pics and deleted them from the camera, then i used the software (forgot the name) and was able to get back 34.5 pics where the .5 was top half of one pic i took.

Reply here and tell us how things went, by the way the S400 is a great cam :)

I have a Canon S400 camera and I NEVER connect the camera to the computer to get the pictures off it. I have a $12 flash card reader that mounts and acts like a CD drive. I can pick and choose the images I want to copy to my hard drive.

Using a flash card reader, the only way to get images to delete from the card, is to drag them to the trash and then EMPTY the trash. If I drag images to the trash and don't empty the trash, the images seem to be gone from the card when I unmount it and put it back in the camera, and when I look in the trash, I don't see them there, but like magic, when I mount the card again, there they are - back in the trash!

I don't use iPhoto - found it slow and clunky - so I don't know what happens when you use it to delete photos from your camera, but I wonder if just buying or borrowing a flash card reader and mounting the flash card and looking in the trash (assuming you haven't yet emptied it) might reveal all your photos there. Worth a try!

If you're lucky enough to find your photos in the trash, just drag them out of the trash unto the desktop or into a folder and then you can get them from there into iPhoto if you want to.

Take care, Margaret

Update
PhotoRescue (http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/) managed to recover nearly all the photos from my dodgy card. What a great app!!! Now....to kick Crucial's ass. ;)

I used "Data Rescue" (http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php) - and it saved the 200 photos that "mysteriously" became deleted recently. I highly reccomend the program.... if you are willing to spend $85... its well worth the cost.
