it would be a nice pic if not for the "feet" at the corners. I don't get it, why feet for placing this screen side down?
otherwise, nice looking, dunno how practical.

I think the little feet are actually snaps or magnets for the cover.

Is this supposed to be convincing? It was obviously done in a 3D package. There are like 400 different independant versions of the new iMac floating around. This is just one of them.

I don't think he was trying to be convincing....but just trying to have some fun! :D

Im sure prototypes are less guarded after the final version is done, thats why it is so much easier to get your hands on 'illegal' photos. I think thats what happened with the iWalk video.

how does the pen float like that
nice though

This is a fake! For a start, any new apple products would be pushing for an OSX look not OS9. Looks good though!

But it needs part of the screen dedicated for writing. I especially like the CD part... ;)
One ugly thing though is those four screws at each corner... Like someone else said, why should we put it down with the screen facing the surface?

the image of the Tibooks that apple uses was actually created in photoshop.

i still really love this concept. who cares if the mock-up isn't what everyone thinks is best. just the idea of it would be great.

that tower you pictured.. about being night before expo.. the case itself is very similar to a pic of a G4 I saw that had been burnt, where all the plastic has melted off.. I suspect someone just removed all the plastic from their case, except the 4 handle type things

(just to clarify this is in response to the G4 pic not iPad)
This could be real since other sites had pictures of actual G4 prototypes like when MacOSX.org had the graphite version of the quicksilver

The Register ran a feature on the new iMac in the Summer, where they claimed it would have a detachable touch sensitive screen that could be used for Web surfing. It would communicate wirelessly with the iMac base station, and since OS X is a properly layered OS, the base station would run the kernel and low level processes, leaving the detatchable screen to run Quartz - the graphics layer. This neat approach would mean you could use the screen unit to control several different Macs remotely.
Such a device would look very similar to this unit, although I would expect the CD/DVD drive to be on the base station to enable the tablet to be as slim and lightweight as possible.
Clearly you'd want to build handwriting recognition into the unit - this is where Newton comes in useful for once ;)
This this device would rely on OS X, it would have to run OS X as default, OS 9 would only be accessible via Classic.
If they release this device, it truely will be revolutionary, and very difficult for Windows PC manufacturers to copy.

This design image appears to be significantly closer to what is being revealed at MWSF than anything i've seen before. It also gel's with my information on the new iMac/? having a wireless mouse/keyboard unit
Forget the iWalk, that's nothing compared to this.

Here is what I think will be revealed on January 7th.
1 Screens: 10 -17 - 19 - 22 - 24. Regular and Touch Sensitive. Firewire, USB, Gigawire and Airport bulit-in. SuperDrive.
2 iPod size modules will plug into these screens. CPU Modules will come with G4/G5 and dual processors, with 512 - 2 GB memory and 10 - 40 GB HD.
Much like Chinese cooking, you can mix and match.
I can also take only myCPU module (in my pocket) and use any screen to show and/or do my work. As example, between my home and my studio I can commute with only the CPU. Also by carrying a 10" screen and my CPU plugged in I have a complete solution in my pocket.
Come on Steve, take the floor.

I would imagine that the desktop picture above would just be a transport case (since it looks fairly hard waring) for new hardware/motherboards for sending systems to developers. After all, software developers/partner companies wouldn't need to see a new case design if they are only testing the internals. That way they can ensure that their latest case designs are kept under wraps/have minimum exposure until their release.

So why would Palm and Handspring not be coming and PC be sponsoring. This is even more interesting considering how poorly Palm has supported OS X .. delay delay and then release junk for Beta (oh wait that was only an internal public beta.. ignore our web site .. oh 300 users on our ftp site.. oops) and then don't show up for MWSF. I am thinking against all rumors to the contrary that since no other major Palm player is sked to be there and PC is sponsoring Apple is doing the PDA/Tablet thing. Heading to SF tomorrow morning and I can't wait to find out..

I've just been smelling a whole Palm-buyout the last few days. Palm needs to be aquired, Apple wants Palm for the engineers from Be they aquired not so long ago. Why? Because Apple has a new Newton.
Foocha

Apple has passed on buying Be so many times in the past that I think it's unlikely that they've experienced a conversion now. Buying Palm would be a pretty expensive way of getting Be - it would be like eating a bagel because you want the seasame seeds.
I think we can all be greatful that Apple bought NeXT rather than Be - imagine if they'd built Rhapsody using Be rather than OS X using NeXTStep. No UNIX, no Carbon environment, no apps. Apple would have found themselves in the position Be are in today with no developer support, some neat technology perhaps, but no one interested in it. Also, consider how much damage Gaussé did to Apple last time around. I hardly think they'd welcome him back.
Palm Desktop for OS X looks pretty promising to me, and if Apple has any sense, they'll continue to steer well clear of the PDA market that they had to pull out of with their tail between their legs in '98, and leave it to the ones who do it best.

Palm isn't doing a good job...
Look at the Newton Videos posted on this site (front page). They're amazing and surpass a Palm in every aspect..! The Newton was like a Pocket PC except was one 5 years ago!

If the Newton really was so great, Apple wouldn't have abandoned it. It never turned a profit for Apple, and here's why:
- It was too expensive
- It was too big
- It was not the standard
I am still the proud owner of a Newton, but lets face it, the Palm took off and the Newton never did.
The only reason for Apple to return to the PDA market is if they have something that offers substatially more value to a wider audience than anything that is currently available. Bringing back the big, expensive Newton that was never popular in the first place in not the solution.
Having said that, seeing these videos has made me get my old Newton out of the closet and have a play again, but that's just nostalgia.
