well i finally received my g5 today!

i have a question though. how do i transfer all my prefs and settings, email, itunes library, iphoto library, etc. from my g4? i know there's an option of hooking up a firewire cable, but that's too cumbersome for me cuz i don't have space to setup another workstation for it. is there way of doing over my local network? thanks for any help.

Ya can

You can hook up machines via ethernet to transfer files.

But it is very manual and time consuming.

I used the firewire method for the first time with a new G5 from a G3 powerbook, and it was fantastic.

You don't really need to setup another workstation, just hook up your old mac to power, plug in a keyboard hook them together with firewire and hold down T when you startup.
(Don't even need a screen)
Everything is transfered over, and now your G5 is setup with everything your old mac had + any new software that come swith the G5 you didn'y have before.
