View Full Version : iSkin Vu - Review

Hey guys, so I just received my iSkin Vu today, and I thought I woul give you guys a review.
For starters, I ordered the Puma Black iSkin Vu and it cost about $70 including shipping and tax.
Let me begin by saying that I am a pretty clumsy guy, and thus I have always bought the iSkin Revo cases for my iPhone, iPhone 3g, and iPhone 3gs. They have always offered great protection and I am happy to say that this case is just as good:

I personally love the way this case looks. I saw the other Vu models, and although there are a lot of colors, I thought they were too flashy. The black is conservative and doesn't draw too much attention, but still looks pretty sleek. The clear back also looks awesome, especially since the black and silver combination looks really great. My one minor gripe about the look of this case is that, while the back is clear, the black rubber is somewhat glossy. I am used to the matte look of the Revo2 case for the iPhone, which I prefer. It's not too glossy, but under certain lighting, the shiny surface doesnt sit well with me. I definitely prefer the matte look, but the shine is bleh 1/15 times. Most times you cant tell.

The back of the case is a clear hard plastic shell that has subtle and small circular "carvings" (I cant think of a better word?) that arent very noticible but give it a great texture. The black sides are a softer rubber material that wraps around the front but doesnt cover the entire bezel. The lower part of the bezel, including the home button, is covered but the rest of the bezel is not. Overall, the quality is EXCELLENT :D. I had high expectations for this case but the quality of the materials just blew me away. I was expecting something on par with the iPhone cases but this is far better. VERY sturdy and secure. Like I said, I'm a clumsy guy, but I now have no issue bringing out my iPad in this case. Small drops (like up to 6 inches), small bumps, any scraping on the floor, wont have any effect on your iPad. I even feel like this thing could take a drop from 4-5 feet, and still be ok. Very solid and secure, perfect for the average klutz thats always dropping his stuff like me.

The case is well designed. It doesnt add much bulk to the iPad, and makes it feel only slightly heavier. It adds some good grip while you're holding it, thanks to the black rubber. All the holes and buttons (volume, headphone jack, 30 pin connector, screenlock, screen position lock) are all fully covered by either rubber or plastic. The rubber covering the headphone jack and screen position lock, can be peeled back (but are still attached if that makes sense), but the volume buttons and screenlock button have carved, fitting plastic so that you can use them with the case on. The 30 pin connector on the bottom is a little tricky. The case actually doesnt cover that bottom piece, which allows you to dock your ipad, but it comes with a clear plastic cover that attaches to the bottom so that you can protect it when it is not docked. The extra piece actually still has a hole for the connector to slip in to charge, so I actually just keep it on at all times since I dont have a dock. The plastic piece seems to be connected by just firmly pressing it into the case. There is no clicking sound to confirm that it is in well, but, it is very tight and firmly holds the piece in place. I can definitely see it being annoying to have to take it off and on if you plan to use a dock.
Finally, something that I find worth noting is that while the black plastic covers the complete bottom part of the bezel (where the home button is), the case doesnt do the same for the top and sides, they are exposed. Now, some people actually dont like it when the case covers the bezel, but I guess Im just used to the iSkin Revo case for the iPhone. I would have prefered it if the black plastic covered the entire bezel. Still, the case is very securely held.

I would give this case a 95/100. :)
It looks awesome, provides great protection, and feels like high quality material. The only reasons I deducted points were because I would have preferred a more matte black color, and for it to have wrapped around the entire bezel. But still, it is definitely worth the money. I had considered going with a portfolio type case, but I really hated the idea of having to turn back a front cover every time I wanted to use it. I wanted a strong cover that would still allow me to use my iPad instantly.
Sorry if this is long, but feel free to ask any questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Oh and sorry about the crappy pictures, I don't have a digital camera with me, so I had to use my iPhone 3gs

I also have a PowerSupport Anti-Glare Screen Protector on the iPad. Which is awesome btw.

Got mine last Monday (blue) and feel pretty much the same way - fantastic case. My only gripe is the dock-door fits very poorly. Does yours? It doesn't slide all the way in so it's constantly being held on by just a millimeter or so of plastic. I've tried refitting the case and it doesn't help. I suppose as long as it holds, it's fine, and it does seem to be holding, but I fear it's going to tumble off, unnoticed, sometime, and I'll never see it again. I can't say it makes me dislike the case at all, however, as the rest of the quality of the case is so high, but my hand constantly brushes against the edges of that ill-fitting door, so I'm constantly reminded of it. I'll see if I can get pictures of it later in case no one has any idea what I'm talking about.

What am I saying? I can take a decent picture now with my Iphone 4. Here it is, after another refit a few minutes ago.

Thanks for the review... I was considering this case, but the lack of reviews and high price kept me away. Looks very nice though.

Mm yea. If I look up close, it looks similar. Maybe mine fits a little better, but you can see that it doesnt go in properly. But I have to say, eventhough it looks that way, it's still very hard for me to pull it out. It's in there very snug, and I would be surprised if it fell out. I think that the piece might eventually shift into place with time as you "break it in". (probably not an apropriate saying for a case lol). Anyway, I'll post an update in a couple of weeks to see if it falls off or gets better

Doesn't the little flange on the dock cover tuck into the small channel in the case itself. That is what I have mine doing. I may be wrong because it is really hard to take off.

Any thoughts?

Yes, it does, but not by much. Click the image to enlarge it and you'll see it's a millimeter, maybe two, holding it in there. I'm also a little bothered by the mis-shapen cut where the clear plastic meets the blue that you can see on the other part there. Maybe I'll contact Iskin and ask if this is normal, send them the image to see what they think. Maybe I got a bad one.

Really starting to dig the looks of this case. Otterbox should be here soon though so if I don't like it, who knows, maybe I'll switch.

I got a request for a couple of images of the Reflex Blue case I have that shows the color, so here they are:

Looks great! After an unfortunate drop, during which the Switcheasy Nude case did nothing to protect the iPad, I decided to order this one. On amazon.com it is 1/2 the price ($32.24, free shipping).
I will post my thoughts when I get it.

I've got the aqua one and will post a video this weekend. Great case but I don't like how the back flap does not line up 100%
