Are you looking for earbuds or real headphones?

If you're fine with in-ear phones I can highly recommend Shure e2c's

Dont spend to much money on it, anything above $50 is to much unless you want to get the hiuge ones that cover the whole ear.

surely the quality can only be so good through an mp3, going through a portable audio amplifier?

Check out the Sennheisser HD500 range, particularly the HD500's and the HD590's.
I have a pair of Stax electrostatics, which are immense, but are very expensive (the Senny Electrostatics are £12,000!!!).
Also check out Beyer's DT series, starting at the 440's.

I would recommend the Bose line of headphones. They are very comfortable and sound very decent. :)

what headphone would you go with for around the $150-$200 range. i am going to use it with my ipod. what sounds the best? i like the sony v700. are they any good? i am looking for the headphones that go around your head, not earbuds.
thanks again for all of your help.

I just recieved my special edition wired product test edition yesterday. Here are the results from the headphone category:
Hi-Fi Headphones: Sennheiser HD 555 - $170
...yeah..they didnt reveiw that many, and most of them were out of your price range or in ear. I personally like sony products, they tend to give a clearer sound than others.

555's should be fine with an iPod, it's generally not the power of the amp that's the issue, it's the impedance. Most Headphones run in the 32 Ohms category, which makes them all fairly compatible, but is also why it's not a great idea to drive your hi-fi with your iPods headphone output. (it sounds crap is all, it won't do any damage). The line out on the current dock sounds much better.
I'd try Amazon to start with, then check out the other Pro-audio on-line stores.
