Cult of Mac reports that the iPhone will be coming to T-Mobile's U.S. network during the third quarter of this year, which runs through the end of September, according to a "highly placed source" at T-Mobile. The move would bring to an end AT&T's exclusive relationship with Apple to offer the device in the U.S.
Talks between Apple and T-Mobile are at an advanced stage, our source says, and it's 80 percent likely that the iPhone will be coming to T-Mobile in Q3.

The source works at T-Mobile but asked not to be quoted directly and to remain anonymous because they aren't authorized to talk to the press.
As the report notes, it is unclear whether the existing iPhone 4 hardware is compatible with T-Mobile's 3G network, as even though the carrier uses the same UMTS system as the iPhone and its partner carriers, it utilizes a 1700 MHz frequency band that it not officially supported by the iPhone 4. It is possible, however, that the hardware already supports the 1700 MHz band but is not included in Apple's specs or even in documentation filed with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.

While many observers have been focused on market leader Verizon for Apple's first U.S. carrier expansion beyond AT&T, a growing number of reports have suggested that T-Mobile might be a better candidate due to its UMTS support, something Verizon's and Sprint's networks can't offer.

Shouldn't we already know for sure whether or not the iPhone supports the 1700mhz band, thanks to unlockers?

Hell ********** yes. Been with T-Mobile for the last 7 years. They're awesome around where I live (Boston) and I've been contract free for the past 5. Bring it on iPhone.

If this were to happen, Apple would have no reason to refuse to unlock iPhones after your contract was finished. Users would now have an officially supported second network in the States.

It's almost August... If it's going to launch sometime around September don't you think they should be done with the "talking stage" already?

If an anonymous person makes a sound on the internet and nobody is around to hear it, does it really make a sound?

This could put the free bumper Apple is offering until September 30th in better context .... hmmm

Perhaps the iPhone 4 for T-Mobile will be a bit different in that Apple may have already identified a solution, pitched it to T-Mobile, and would use it to entice T-Mobile to come aboard as Apple is likely to have a iPhone 4 capable of running on T-Mobile with "better" signal performance.

Don't people already use the iPhone on T-Mobile (meaning the phone can run on their network as it is right now - it doesn't need a new chip)?

This is totally logical. Sure there is a frequency issue but i am sure the chipset they picked will accommodate this need. The UMTS is technology they are already working worldwide. Can they build a CDMA iphone sure but lets face it, the phone would be crippled from the starting gates. The lack of concurrent access is an issue AKA no dual channel use aka no talk and surf. This has been in apple ads worldwide. CDMA does have a non-supported ability to do talk and surf but that would require the CDMA provider to support it and the hardware. Verizon explored this before LTE and opted to just push out LTE as quickly as possible. Iphone on LTE will be on all LTE carriers. T-mobile VZW ATT. They are all fundamentally GSM alliance members which is where the Iphone lives.
