Apple has their own port of X11.
But since then, all *NIX distros have switched to X.org release.
Will the X11 Mac port be updated too, so it can reflect the latest technologies used?

Apple's port of XWindows is from XFree86. It would seem more necessary that XFree86 and the open source of XWindows on x.org be cooperative (if they don't have feature parity) then, there would be no need to switch.

Probably. Apple X11 is currently based on XFree86 (version 4.3.0 to be precise).
