I need to buy an external hard drive for backing up my Powerbook and storing video. I'm on a tight budget, so I don't want to spend much more than $200.

I love the looks of this Lacie drive , but it only has a 2Mb buffer and doesn't support Firewire 800 (just firewire 400).

For a little bit more (around $223 U.S. dollars total) I can get a Firewire 800 MacAlly enclosure and better Hitachi hard drive.

Are there other external drives/drive enclosures I should look at? Is Firewire 800 really that much better than Firewire 400?

Thanks 🙂

Get the slower firewire 400, althou its slower its also cheaper, for any more files you would need just byrn them onto DVD's.

I ended up ordering the MacAlly Firewire 800 enclosure with this Seagate Barracuda 200Gb hard drive.

The 250Gb Hitachi hard drive I linked to before would NOT have worked in that enclosure since it's an SATA drive... rather than an IDE/ATA drive. So, I'm glad I caught my mistake before ordering.

Total cost with shipping came to around $197 - not bad for a 200Gb Firewire 800 drive. 🙂

Yes, a Firewire 400 enclosure would have been $30-$40 cheaper, but since I want to use the drive for some video work I think it's worth the additional expense.
