Is there any reason your five authorized computers can't be a mix of Mac and PC machines? A buddy of mine claims he can't authorize his PC on his iTunes account, which presently only has his iMac as an authorized computer. In other words, he still has remaining authorizations, but claims iTunes won't let him authorize a PC since his other authorized computer is a Mac. Is this the way it works?

Your friend is wrong. That's not how it works. I currently have two Macs and three PCs (1 Vista and 2 Windows 7) authorized for my account.

How would you authorize multiple computers?

If you transfer/copy protected songs to another computer and try to play them, iTunes will tell you you can't unless you authorize the computer on your iTunes account. You can have up to 5 computers authorized on your account at a time. Once you authorize a computer it can play any DRM-ed content that is tied to your iTunes account.
