View Full Version : G4 MMD PCI Limitations

are all four PCI slots on the 2002 MDD all 32 bit and 33MHZ. and what exactly does that mean. Is it possible to set up a RAID 5 with a PCI card. And what is the max read and write times I can achive, having 3 SATA 400GB Seagate 7200.8 drives hooked up.

According to Mactracker, there are 4 64-bit 33MHz PCI slots, and one 4x AGP slot.

so how does 64 bit help out or does it do nothing at all?

More data sent per clock cycle. Twice as much in this case. And you would see a huge read/write speed with a 3 drive SATA RAID 5 array. All the benefits of RAID 0 but with the safety of RAID 1. It would be way more than your internal drive.

So use your internal drive for the OS and non-video stuff (you are doing video work right?) and the RAID array for the heavy duty video work.

yeah it's for video work. But I read elsewhere that PCI maxes out at 133MB/s. So I guess that makes it impossible to read and write at 160-180MB/s for uncompressed HD, even if i had 3 Raptors attached. Now a side note, does the PCI bus slow down if say you have your SATA PCI card along with a PCI soundcard, a Firewire 800/USB 2.0 card and a video caprture card?

so does this mean a 64bit 33mhz slot is just as fast as a 32bit 66mhz slot?
