I hear these are blazing fast machines! Not sure if anyone has actually got one yet but if old ones are anything to go by the new ones will be great :D
Got a friend who is thinking of getting one, not sure what's taking him so long! wish he would just order ;)

How does the display compare to the old model? Does it still have a yellow tinge?

I've been installing Logic Pro, and, so far, I'm running at least six hours...and I'm only thru the first two DVD's...seems incredibly slow.

Let me know how it goes, and tell us how Logic runs at the lowest buffer setting.

I am waiting for it to arrive at my local apple store. The store let me swap my late 2009 i7(bought on 24th June so just over a month old) for the new i7 with no extra charge. The manager told me that the new i7 should be arriving sometime this week.

What sample rate are you at, and what buffer size do you have? Also is it better to install everything on the SSD?
Mine comes Tuesday.
Can anyone recommend a file system setup for OSX/Windows?
I have a 2 terabyte/256 SSD iMac coming. I was going to format the SSD half for NTFS, and have OSX whatever it uses. Since I want to read and write on the 2 Terabyte drive in OSX and Windows is there anyway to get around using mac drive? I find that Mac Drive corrupts hard drives and data.
Whats the deal with NTFS-3G? Is that something worth looking into?
Thanks

Wow! After all the horror stories I've read online about hitches and glitches installing Win 7 with Boot Camp, I can't believe how quick and easy my installation went...used Boot Camp Assistant to partition my internal 1 TB drive, giving Windows 180 GB, then popped in my Win 7 64 bit Professional OEM disk (got it at a local shop that caters to computer builders, around 140.00)...took about 45 minutes, including some restarts, etc...then, popped in the "Mac OSX Install DVD" that came with the iMac (has a gray label), ran the setup.exe, and was pleasantly surprised to find that they had already included Boot Camp 3.1 on the disk. It loaded all the drivers, etc, and...voila! Everything worked...including my iSight and Magic Mouse/Wireless Keyboard!
Looks like someone at Apple has been listening to all the hubbub surrounding the issues that folks have been having up to now with Windows 7 and Boot Camp...

Just pulled the trigger, not 20 minutes ago, on a 27" core i7 iMac with the 2TB HD plus the 256GB SSD. Also ordered it with 8GB of RAM from the factory. I know it's cheaper to add it myself, but my company is paying for it (and I mean my company), so I'm not too concerned about the price difference.
Delivers sometime between Aug 5 - 10. I really hope it's the 5th or 6th...
Can't wait!
This will actually be the first iMac I've ever owned. Up to this point, they've all been towers (two PowerComputing towers, a blue & white G3, two different G4 towers, two G5 towers and my current Mac Pro).
Looking forward to a clean desk and silent operation.
Oh, and that GeekBench score posted above... the 9882... My '06 Mac Pro scores only 5300. Yikes!!

this is really tempting me to upgrade..
currently have a 2008 imac 2.8ghz with 4gb ram...
mainly use it for iLife apps / photoshop and web stuff...
would the i7 make a drastic improvement to my iLife? (iMovie is the bearbug at the moment with slow rendering and exporting and conversion)...
what do you guys think?

Hi all, took the plunge and ordered an i7 27"er the day after release.
im in the UK and ordered via the online store, only thing i changed was the CPU, no additional RAM or SSD's etc.
unfortunately i'm very impatient, especially when my estimated delivery is 6th of Aug.
i got a free ipod with mine as im a student
i have a question though, the USA apple store shows my order status as shipped (like the UK one) but lists 2 tracking numbers, non of which work :( according to the site my imac has shipped via Kuhene and Nagel (i assume by boat judging by the ETA) but the number they provide to track that shipment cannot be used on their site, should i be worried?
im getting this imac to play starcraft 2 on windows 7 bootcamp as my current 2008 imac has trouble with mediums and reading the other posts i should get a decent bump in performance and visuals :)

I've got the exact same configuration as you, ordered pretty much the same day and have the same estimated delivery time of 6th. My order says it has been shipped, but don't worry about the two tracking numbers yet as they won't work with UPS or TNT who Apple use to ship with in the UK. The orders get sent to the UK from wherever they are (Ireland, Czech Republic or China) and once they land in the UK, then they get assigned a carrier tracking number. These should be released to us either on Wednesday or Thursday.....be patient, but like you I'm finding it hard to be so!! :D

Just for other folks worried about their incoming machines.
I ordered 2 27" I7's with SSD's
Both of my machines arrived saturday, and neither of them have Yellow screens, dog whistle sound from brightness adjustment, or gray banding.
So while there are a lot of people posting that lots of problems still exist, it is entirely possible to get perfect machines, the first time around.

Pretty much, for example a UPS tracking number usually starts with 1Z.....but the shipping status page will give you that once the courier is assigned, either TNT or UPS

Ah, the Power Computing days. :D Probably getting an i7 27" to replace my long in the tooth G5 tower. Ditching my old Viewsonic CRT and using my DELL 2005FPW as the secondary display. I am thinking of getting a KVM switch to toggle between the iMac and my MBP.
The G5 will probably get it's drive wiped eventually, get some cheaper HDs in it and I can use it for an office server or leave it as a computer for the kids.

Wait a sec.. you do NOT have gray banding? You are the first person ever to say so, thats why i have to ask again. It would be absolutely awesome if Apple would get better with this, and if there really are devices without it out there, then my hope gained a lot :-)
I've seen endless devices of the old models, and they ALL had it...

.... and I thought I was addicted to :apple: products!
My 27" i7 with SSD shipped overnight and shows an estimated delivery date of August 9th. As indiciated by the agent when I ordered by phone, the unit does indeed seem to have been produced in Cork, Ireland, serial number is CK031xxxxxx, yet when I phoned chasing yesterday as my order had changed from 'Not yet shipped' to 'Prepared for shipment' and back to 'Not yet shipped', they told me my unit was on the dock, awaiting shipment, in Hong Kong!
Anyway, if they keep to 9th August delivery, that suits me as I'm off work that day, albeit I'd rather they deliver it sooner!
EDIT: spoke with Apple again, seems they were guessing when they said it was in Hong Kong .... my iMac i7 was built in Cork, Ireland and is shipping from there. Strange, as my last iMac i7 (which I returned for yellow screen issues) was built in Shanghai ....

upon boot up I do not have any yellow tint or high pitched noise from changing brightness and no gray bands!!
First thing I did was install Starcraft 2. Set everything to HIGH and max res. Only a tiny bit of slow done but still very impressed with it!
Will be installing Windows 7 later! and will have some pictures uploaded of my setup.

-12 gigs of ram
-64-bit version
-not running any applications (used top in terminal to stop un-needed services).
-Stop webserver and file sharing
-There are a few other things you can do as well.
There's one guy who managed to get slightly over 10,000 with one and I really want to know how he did it - my guess is a fast SSD with the OS installed.
Maybe he even put the 1333mhz iMac memory in it even though the bus isn't technically capable of supporting it, it may have given him an edge.
I'm also considering putting the larger ram chips in the initial memory slots versus where they are now (they were put in the empty slots - the initial
memory are smaller 2 gig chips so I think initial larger chips might give better performance).
I managed to get it from 9500 to this just by playing around.

We should almost have a "geekbench optimization" thread.
I managed to get my G5 2.5 dual be the top machine in that category (2312) (benching in the range of the 2.7 machines) due to optimization.
It's amazing how little things can get higher numbers.

I ordered it last Thurs., it shipped same day from CA, and the original delivery was set for tomorrow. I never get things early. Usually late.

Are you in the Tampa area? I actually did not get a single update (with the exception of the original pick up) on shipping until early this morning. Strange, I know. The only BTO option I added was the i7 upgrade, no SSD or additional RAM. I would keep an eye on your tr# late tonight and look again early in the morning.

I want to know how you got that far. Wow, that's highly impressive. But I'd wager it's the 16 gigs - each piece of ram is 4 gig and thus not impeded by smaller two gig address space. At least, that's what I'm guessing.

Apparently, the lack of tracking updates sometimes relates to whether or not you purchased AppleCare (AC). If you order a machine without AC, you can track it pretty much from the moment it leaves the factory. If however, you purchase a Mac with AC, you can't generally track it until it arrives at the :apple: depot where it is merged with the AC box and formed into one order which can then be tracked .... that's cetainly the difference my colleague and I experienced last time we at the nearly same time, one with and one without AC.

The lack of updates is because the packages are traveling across the country on ground. I just got off the phone with fed ex.

Ok... So I just found this forum and after seeing that geekbench score of 9882 I CAN'T WAIT to pick up my iMac 27" i7 with 8gb of ram this afternoon!
I am a full time photographer and for the past three years I have been working on a 17" Macbook Pro Core Duo 2.16 ghz, 2gb ram with a Geekbench score of 1,420!! I think I am going to see a drastic improvement in speed and get far more time back after sifting through, editing and exporting thousands of wedding images.
Can anyone confirm a vast improvement in RAW rendering speeds in Lightroom?? Would love to know. :)
Can't wait to get home with it and fire it up for the first time!

Same position for me. Ordered day 1. Shipped CA on the 29th. Last tracking update was June 30 leaving Sacramento, CA at 10:02 AM. From then until Aug 1 it said the next scheduled update was Aug 1. That came and went and the message disappeared. Scheduled for delivery tomorrow in Manhattan. We shall see if it makes it. Hopefully it was just missed on the scan on the truck at whatever stop it made on Aug 1.

Ordered on Sunday. Still stating "not shipped yet." Getting bummed because I was off this week and hoping to have it to play with over the weekend.
I did order it with AppleCare, so I'm wondering if that's the reason the tracking system isn't connecting the two. A few pages back (I think on this thread) someone mentioned that Apple's system doesn't track well if a machine was ordered with AppleCare until they're merged in the system.
Still says expected delivery between Aug 5 and Aug 10, though. Do they have Saturday delivery?

Apple doesn't monitor the tracking information after they ship out their products. Once the box leaves apple, its in either UPS' or FedEx's tracking system. As for the AppleCare, if you order a Mac with AppleCare it is automatically enrolled and there is no sign up required. There isn't a separate package for applecare

I just called and asked since I was in the same dilemma. When getting a package over FedEx Ground, they don't always "check in" at every location. You should start seeing tracking updates at around 3PM or 7PM on the day before the package's arrival.

Really happy with my purchase.
upon boot up I do not have any yellow tint or high pitched noise from changing brightness and no gray bands!!
First thing I did was install Starcraft 2. Set everything to HIGH and max res. Only a tiny bit of slow done but still very impressed with it!
Will be installing Windows 7 later! and will have some pictures uploaded of my setup.

I know it's tracked thru FedEx/UPS... but my order is still listed as "not yet shipped." Apple's quote was 2-4 days before ship; today is day #4. I was just hoping it would be more on the 2 days side than the 4 days :o

My 27", 2.93 i7, 8GB (2x4), 2TB +256SSD, MagicTrackPad + MagicMouse + Battery Charger arrived a few minutes ago. Assembled in the US, not China. All packaged very nice with keyboard, trackpad, mouse, CDs and battery charger all in the same accessory box. Unfortunately, they only packaged two of the six rechargeable batteries. There was space in the accessory box provided for them, but they forgot to put them in. A quick call to Apple resulted in another Battery Charger being sent out and I get to keep the "old" one. Yeah! Still scared to turn it on, but when I do, hopefully it will last as long as the 15" 800 MHz, 768 MB, 60GB-HD, flat-panel iMac it's replacing. Take care!

Yes, quite a feeling, pulling that Ethernet cable out of the old 15" flat-panel, slipping it into the new iMac and pushing the power button. Besides initially trying to figure where the HD icons were, it seems to be flawless. No yellow tinge, bleed, noisy hard drive or dog whistle. In fact, my dog was sitting next to me when I tested for that and didn't even twitch an ear! Take care!

Just received shipping notice on mine (i7 w/ 8GB RAM, 2TB HD, 256GB SSD, batteries/recharger, trackpad). Scheduled to arrive on Friday! Can't wait.
Copying all my stuff on to the Drobo now in preparation for the swap. Going to do a clean install of everything and probably re-install the OS when the machine arrives to remove all the extra languages, useless printer drivers, asian language fonts, Rosetta and other stuff I'll never use, especially since space will be at a slight premium given the "small" 256GB size of the boot drive.

Isn't that what you're supposed to get? According to the iMac customization page, under "Apple Battery Charger" when you click "Learn More":
When you order the Apple Battery Charger with your iMac, it will arrive with two batteries installed in the Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad, two batteries installed in the Apple Wireless Keyboard, and two batteries in the box.

I just pulled the trigger or I guess I should say hit the "Place Order" button on a new i7. Nothing fancy, just the 2.93 with 4gb ram and 1 tb hd. Of course I did the upgrade shipping because I am impatient.
I really have no reason to have it except for personal want as I already use a Dell i7 2.66 with a 24" screen and a MacBook. I figure I can consolidate to just 1 machine and sell the others to recoup the cost.
The real justification that made me pull the trigger tonight though is that I have just completed day 14 of quitting smoking. I call this my reward to myself. The money I will save over the next year will pay for the machine alone.
I was a smoker for 25 years. The most I have ever quit before was for 2 days and I cheated at that. Now, I have found a renewed life, after being smoke free for 6 days I realized I could never smoke again due to the benefits I have experienced. I can now breathe! I can sleep! I am back on skates and playing hockey! Now at 14 days without a puff, I get an urge a couple of times a day but it is no longer unbearable. I simply tell myself that it will pass, and it does.
So, I guess my post was to say that I am just excited to announce that I no longer smoke. The iMac is just a selfish reward but if I ever get the urge that just cannot be passed, I'll just jump on my new toy to forget about it. ;)

For the new i7 owners make sure that the black border on the bottom is connected onto the aluminum part. Mines wasn't and it shows this golden part and I'm gonna call Apple tomorrow.
Firstly congratulations to troutspinner. Well done, I've never smoked but working in healthcare i know how difficult it is. Keep it up.
Back to this, I only ordered the i7 cause of the small price difference, the i5 would have done nicely.
But now this waiting is killing me. Hopefully it'll be worth it.
Q about tracking : my EDD says 10Aug but the last line "transit to customer" has been on 5Aug since Tuesday when it was shipped. What does that 5Aug mean.

I've just been through the same, it took about 3 to 3.5 hours to transfer about 400gb on FW800, I just played Forza and kept checking the countdown :D
Zero problems with it so far, the trackpad is fantastic it just works, I can't believe how normal it feels.
I'm looking forward to getting my monitor arm to fit it to but I'm going to need some longer cables for my time machine and other external drives, had to switch one of my drives from fire wire to USB as the new machine is only equipped with the one fire wire port, thats the only downside so far.

Not to be a jerk but is this an owners thread or soon to be owners where's my traking thread?
Well technically we do own our iMacs since we already paid for them, they just haven't arrived at our homes yet :D
Anyway I ordered my i7 the 31st, got the shipping confirmation last night which says "Delivers by the 9th." It's coming from Newark, CA, does that mean my iMac was made in CA? That's close to Union City which I saw others got theirs shipped from. Well hope it comes quickly since I'm down here in the southern part of the state (OC)

Mine arrived today. The only issue I have is a very minor bit of flashlighting on the bottom right which is barely noticeable when the screen is black. Other than that minor detail, the screen is solid, much like the rest of the computer.
My previous iMac was a 20" white iMac with a Core 2 Duo processor, so this was a major upgrade. Completely satisfied with the purchase.

I ordered mine on 8/1 and it finally switched over to "Prepared for Shipment" yesterday afternoon. I expected it to be shipped today. What the hell? Anyone else in the same boat as me?
Edit:
Finally switched over to shipped, 3 hours after Fedex scanned it. Maybe I will still get it by Saturday.

The iMac is just a selfish reward but if I ever get the urge that just cannot be passed, I'll just jump on my new toy to forget about it. ;)
troutspinner
Congratulations on the new iMac.
An even bigger congratulations on stopping smoking. I smoked for a little over 13 years. I have now been stopped for over 3 years. I cant even begin to tell you how much healtier I am now. You will have occasional cravings for many months but one thing is they get easier by the day. It's all down hill from here on in.

Hey there, yes in the UK. I got my confirmation from apple with the order number, checked Apples website where i got the UPS tracking number. From there, onto the UPS website and it tracks as out today for delivery. New iMac arrived yesterday ahead of schedule. Set it up last night and no apparent problems except for a tiny speck of dust on the inside of the glass. The screen itself is pixel perfect with no apparent lighting or colour problems. There is also no apparent problem with strange noises either from fans or elsewhere when I alter the screen brightness. This is the version with a 256GB SSD and a 2 TB internal drive and has 8GB of memory.
I use iStat Menus which shows the 8 logical cores. I'm surprised how evenly the load is distributed across them. For instance whilst downloading and installing the standard set of software I use, I had a TrueCrypt volume creation going on in the background using a fairly CPU intensive encryption algorithm. Cores 1, 3, 5 and 7 were holding at about 20% and cores 2, 4, 6 and 8 at about 10% load. So it looks like the hyper threading is getting some useful work done, or at least that's my take on what I'm seeing.
I'm now looking forward to testing some of my own Erlang and Go programs on it to see how effectively they can use the available processors.

OK, so my i7 was delivered today, right on schedule. I'm in the process of moving everything over from my old Mac Pro. As far as I can tell, there's no screen yellowing, though I will check again later tonight after dark. No dead pixels. No display whine that I've been able to detect yet.
I did have a minor setback when first setting up the machine, though. Even though I told myself I was going to do a clean install of everything, I decided to use the Migration Assistant. Well, after an apparently successful transfer that took about an hour, the iMac would kernel panic upon boot. Had no choice but to wipe the SSD completely from the install DVD and reinstall the OS from scratch. That, plus the reinstall of iLife, took another 45 minutes to do.
So I guess I should have stuck with my original plan to do a clean install of everything - since that's what I ended up doing by force anyway. At least I was able to save space on the SSD by not installing the extra languages, asian fonts and a gigabyte worth of printer drivers I'll never use.
Anyway, so now I'm still busy transferring my data over - still have a good 45 minutes to go on a long, 600GB iTunes folder transfer. About another 20GB worth of documents and I'll finally be migrated over.
I'm afraid of buying another machine in a few years when it's this one's turn to be replaced. It's taken about 6 hours to copy all my data... I can't imagine how much I'll have in another 3 years!

"Ships in x business days" is referring to how long it takes to build the machine and give it to the shipping company. Then you select what kind of shipping you want (the free shipping is 5-7 business day ground, or you can choose the 2-3 day expedited shipping). The delivery times are also spelled out on Apple's site.
Sorry you're disappointed, but most people manage to figure this part out. I hardly think Apple is to blame for your misunderstanding.
FYI, I ordered mine at about 1 am on Monday the 1st. Received it Friday the 6th (yesterday). I paid for the 2-3 day shipping ($35) over the free shipping (5-7 days).

Yeah, I went to see the 27" today. Looks really good. My boss has one also. However most of my time is spent web site designing and I have a 23" Cinema Display Matt finish, so really I would be using that for artwork.
Its just the the 27" model seems like it can handle more upgrades and the 21" so seems like it would last long for an extra £400. It would increase life span to like 4 or 5 years...
Still not sure, I'm not convienced I need the fastest computer, I just don't want to get a machine that in a few years starts to be sluggish...

I received my new 2010 27" i7 iMac on Thursday. It's perfect! No yellow screen, no grey banding, no dead pixels, and no dust. The machine is completely silent. No humming or whistling. The brightness adjustment doesn't cause any problems, and the hard drive is silent as well. This is my first Mac and I'm completely impressed! The 27" screen is perfect for music photo work and music production. Anyone that says it too big is silly. If they had a 30" model, I'd of got that. The screen is gorgeous! :D
P.S. - I dont know how to read the serial number, but if anyone has any questions I'll do my best to answer them.

My new i7 27" custom built, has slight yellow tint on the bottom left, and some edge glow (light leakage) on the bottom left and right. My previous gen iMac (24) had the same glow, so I guess I am kinda used to it. I am really not sure if it is worth sending back, as the next one could be worse or the same. The yellow tint is very slight, and if it wasn't for me looking for it, I doubt I would have noticed.

These screen issues... Yellow tint... dead pixels... lcd bleeding... is this things your are noticing with the naked eye, or do you have to do something special with it?
I was thinking of not doing any tests but simply just have it, and if I saw no problems during 2 weeks of intensive use, using photoshop, doing video editing, watching movies, playing games, itunes, websurfing, iphoto.. I would not look for it, and conclude ths creen is fine?

As much as I want to do the same, $750 is just too much for my budget right now. I thought I might upgrade to the SSD in the future once they come down in price.
So my question is - if I only get the Serial ATA Drive on my i7, will I still be able to swap it out for a SSD or add a SSD in the future? Or will I run into installation problems later?
Thanks for your advice! :)

So the answer is yes you'll be able to add it later, but it will be a labor of love. Apple decided not to include the mounting brackets for the SSD if you didn't order it with one from the get go.

What's the benefit of a Solid State Drive? I don't even know what that is...
It is tremendously faster than a traditional hard drive as well as being potentially more reliable. Hard drives have moving parts and periodically suffer mechanical failure whereas solid state drives (SSDs) have no moving parts and the only way they can "wear out" is if they are re-written millions and millions of times.
In most modern computers the hard drive disk access is the biggest bottleneck in the computer, the SSD can be up to 4X as quick as a traditional hard drive in some tasks.

That really depends on your needs for ram. If you edit videos or lotsa big photos thats a dubble yes :-) If you have many apps open at once thats a yes too. But I think it is smartest to get the base ram configuration (2x2GB) and upgrade yourself (either add 2x4GB or replace the 2x2GB with 4x4GB). That way you can test if you are ok with 4GB .. if not get another 8 if thats not enough get another 8 and replace the 4 from the base config. ..

how are you guys with the SSD and HDD option using it?
are you installing the OS on the SSD and applications on the HDD?
or OS on the HDD and SSD as a scratch drive for iMovie/Final Cut/Photoshop etc..?

this ...
My i7 27" w/ 256 SSD and 2 TB and 8 GB of RAM will be here on Saturday ...
Really want to know how those who have this config are using it ... and why ?
Pros vs Cons ...
Apps and OS on SSD is all I have read ... but the only benefit I see with that is fast boot times ( rarely ever reboot the machine ... and when I do - a few seconds really won't bother me ) ...
Am I missing something?

Received my iMac 27 i7 this morning and spent the entire day transferring data and things from my old iMac C2D. It took 8 hours in total.
Just like to say, I don't have yellow tint, dead pixels, backlight bleed, or any of the screen problems discussed heavily in this forum.
Well tomorrow I start up my applications!
Got mine this morning,
Bought on 31 July, delivered 9 Aug , one day before EDD
Screen is huge, no yellow-tint, no flickering,
HDD is making the TAPPING noise though, Not happy about that but not letting it ruin my day, will leave it for a week and see if its a huge problem.
Geekbench Score 64bit - 10777 !! 32bit - 9670
I'll try run any other requests people have.
Only prob i am having is getting vlc to play nice with mkv, looking for a fix.
Noob to OSX,
loving it though.

By default Apple puts the OS & apps on the SSD. The mechanical HD is blank.
While speedy booting for some people isn't important since they may only rarely restart their machines, having the OS on the SSD still speeds up the system's access to necessary files, libraries, frameworks, etc.. And app launching from the SSD is really, really fast as well.
I'm quite happy with the speed boost. Yes, it was an expensive option (and yes, it's way cheaper to add yourself if you have the technical ability). But we already knew that the iMac was not a do-it-yourself machine.
Not sure if using an SSD for scratch is wise, given how many write cycles such a scratch device is sure to undergo, but I'm still new to the world of SSDs myself.

Hmmm, just read about the i7 that the 9XX series (in the iMac it's a 940) supports triple memory channels. So, in theory, to get the most speed out of your iMac's Ram you have to install a triple memory kit (= three the same SO-dimms).
So, this raises a couple of questions:
- Does this makes sense? (or do I need to go to bed, it's getting late here!)
- Does anyone tried it yet? If so, please post benchmarks with 2 dimms (standard Apple Ram), triple memory kit, and maybe even with 4 dimms.
- So why doesn't Apple offer a 3x2GB BTO option? (with the MacPro's it's standard a 3x 1GB kit)
- Is the memory bus maybe crippled in the iMac and doesn't support triple memory?
- Any thoughts about this?
I'm going to bed!!! :o

Actually no it's the 870, not the 940. According to people who have received their machines, Geekbench reports it as:

I ordered the standard i7 config on Aug 6th, shipped today Aug 9th and will deliver Aug 11th. It is a QP machined so that means it was manufactured in the U. S. of A. !! I hope that means the quality control is at its highest and the machined will be defect free. Keeping my fingers crossed.

It seems like all the i7's that are getting manufactured in the U.S. do not have any of the normal problems..

There is a definite trend of 27" not manufactured in the US having problems. There is a poll, here or AI, I forgot where. Kinda scary for you. Too bad Apple makes this big purchase so full of stress. It should be fun...

OK, that explains a lot if it's not a 9 series. All the other i7 series still use double channel memory, so always install a double channel memory kit with upgrading! Could anyone experiment with that? If you have 4x 2GB of ram and take one so dimm out, does this make a lot of difference in speed?? Thanks!

No, it's not normal. Do you think the thousands of people who get a perfectly good Mac come in here to talk about it? Only the people who get hit with a bad one complain about it.
Can Apple make sure that 100% of all iMac production is "perfect" when they are made by contractors? No, they cannot. Fortunately they have excellent customer care and a great warranty for swapping out the problem machines.
Get a grip people!

It isn't normal. At least not to most of us long time mac users. This lack of QC is a recent thing. Apple has been negligent recently (I blame the iPhone) on all things Mac. Taking their time with updates and Mac OS X.

The sound problem (depending the luminosity) is a frequent problem ?
And the heat problem ?
I'm asking those questions because it's my first Mac...:(

I would agree it isn't normal, but I have had to return a 24" iMac & just swapped out my 27" i5 2.8 for an i7 2.93 due to issues (not yellowing, but heat & boot issues). I wanted an i7 anyway - so maybe it was just fate! I gladly pd the $200 diff to swap out the i5 when I learned they had some in stock.
I am not sure when & where mine was manufactured - how can you tell?
I have to say that Apple's tech support & customer service is absolutely fantastic. I can't say the same for the PCs I own. I am very competent with PC operations & have built my own a couple times as well as bought pre-built. I decided to buy the 3 yr warranty with Apple because of issues that may pop up. I think it is a good investment for the 27" iMac based on the history of problems they have had with the screen.
As fas as Apple's QC slipping -I think it may a supplier issue QC & some things just slip past as they are experiencing this huge boom in sales.

I agree with the above -- people without problems won't bother posting. If I must, I can only say that my late 2008 MBP is still in "out of the box" condition, after using it for most days since. This goes for all computer hardware and software releases. Just look in some forums following a major OS update; it'll end up sounding like it's the company's worst release ever. ;) And then you can go on installing your most likely hitch-free OS update.

My i7 arrived yesterday. I fired it and found no issues at all!
So I installed the extra 4GB RAM and put the boxes in the loft.
No yellow tint, no brightness whine. It gets warm when running WoW with all the settings maxed.
The hard drive clunks a bit, but it's nothing worth whinging about.
I'm super impressed by this machine!!

I gave mine its first baptism under fire doing a handbrake encode from MPEG2 to h.264. 2 hours of video encoded in about 20 minutes with 700%+ CPU utilization.
I thought my 2007 Core 2 Extreme got hot while encoding, I cannot even put my hand on the back of the new iMac's case. The vent area gets incredibly hot.

HandBrake 64 bit was averaging 160+ fps on my machine (specs below). My 2006 Mac Pro did only about 60 fps! 15 minutes for a two hour DVD. Amazing.
I didn't feel the back of the case, but then again why would I need to? As lo g as it doesn't get so hot it malfunctions I suppose I don't really care. Fans did hit about 2000 rpm, though, during the encode.

I got the same FPS, 160+. Absolutely incredible to get the encoding speed that high. It makes me want to see what the new 12-core MacPro will do.
My older 2007 Core 2 Extreme iMac seemed to handle the hot temperatures really well, and I never had thermal issues with it.
For kicks, I also booted up with the 64-bit kernel and have not seen any compatibility issues. Quite a nice machine. The only thing I find annoying is the lack of jumbo frames.

That what I would expected but don't get. Just ripped for test a DVD and got 60 fps ... actually on my LINUX box I get somewhere around 90-100 fps (with CLI interface though)
I read somewhere that the DVD in the iMac is not the best so I wonder if you use an external DVD or copy the files first on the HDD before ripping.
What setup within Handbrake you use ?
Thanks in advance

Some DVD players limit the "rip speed" to a rather low rate. This is what is likely limiting your speed. To test the encoding capability, you would need to rip from an ISO image.

Mine arrived today and I had a few issues. Mainly because I restored from time machine. Took over 1 hour to do the restore and everything looked correct but when I plugged in my iPhone 4 it wasn't recognized by iTunes. I tried 2 other iPhones and my iPad with the same result, I even reinstalled iTunes with no luck. I just spent all night doing a fresh install of snow leopard and moving files from the TM backup and all is working great kicks my old 20" iMac 2009 out the water and I can't wait to give it a real. Test sometime soon.

Correct. I use RipIt to copy the disc contents to the hard drive. Takes about 12 min. for a typical movie.
But even the two-stage process (rip to HD, then encode) still completes in half the time my 2006 2.66GHz Mac Pro could do it in.
While I don't expect the hyperthreading of the i7 processor to do much in low-intensity apps, it was quite impressive to see all 8 virtual cores hitting 95% each during the encode. I think I'll try writing the output file to the SSD instead of the mechanical HD to see if there's any noticeable improvement in encode times.
