I got this idea from John Scalzi's (http://www.scalzi.com/whatever/003023.html) blog.

1. Select your ENTIRE iTunes or iPod library

2. Put it on "shuffle play"

3. Post the next ten songs it plays (you can fast-forward if something truly appalling comes up, but you still have to put it on the list. BE HONEST! If an embarrassing song like "Hey Mickey" comes, up, that's part of the fun!)

Here's my list:

1. I Remember You/Dixie's Dream - Bette Midler/James Caan
2. Giants in the Sky - Mandy Patinkin
3. Night Waltz II - A Little Night Music
4. Class - Bebe Neuwirth (Chicago Soundtrack)
5. Georgia - Preservation Hall Jazz Band
6. Cumbanchero - Bebó Valdes Trio
7. Piazolla: Verano Portella - John Williams (The classical guitarist, not the Star Wars composer)
8. Medicine Show - Big Audio Dynamite
9. Fugue for Tinhorns - Walter Bobbie, J.K. Simmons, Timothy Shew (Guys and Dolls Soundtrack)
10. Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out - Eric Clapton

[Aack! So many show tunes! They all came from my wife, I swear it!]

Well, surely no one's playlist will be as humiliating as mine, so go on, give it a try!

A major limitation IMO!! I found that listening to the library by song on the iPod in alphabetical order is the absolute best random, iPod's random can't compare.

I'm not so sure I want to do this, since there's a 90% chance that nobody will have heard of any of the songs I posted. My iTunes library, save one song, is all video game music (and I highly doubt you'd recognize that lone song that isn't VGM either - it's the kind of thing the iTMS would NEVER carry, since it falls outside the jurisdiction of the RIAA).

I was just about to say the same thing! iTunes' "random" mode kinda sucks. I've got 5500+ songs in my library and when I shuffle them, it seems like I hear the same few artists over and over...
No, it doesn't suck. It's giving you what you requested; the problem is that's not what you really want. It shuffles the songs randomly. If you listen to the entire shuffled list, you'll hear every song once. If you stop in the middle (without pausing), it will reshuffle when you return. When it does, it's highly unlikely you won't hear repeat songs, because that would mean it "randomly" shuffled all of the unheard songs from the last time to the front of the playlist. That isn't random at all. For what you (apparently) want, I would advise (1) pausing iTunes and picking up where you stopped when you come back and/or (2) using smart playlists. After all, the fact that you want to eliminate the possibility of hearing some artists more frequently than others goes directly against the definition of random.

1. I know that if I listen to the entire shuffled list, I'll hear everything once.
2. I know that if I stop in the middle and restart it, it'll reshuffle and start over. That's not what I'm talking about.

What I'm saying is that when I randomize 5000+ songs, without stopping or pausing, out of say 15 songs, I may hear the same artist (out of like 300 artists) 3 or 4 times, sometimes from the same album. Hardly random. So yes, it does suck.

With all due respect, you don't know what random (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=random) means. When you shuffle, say, 5000 songs, every song has an equal opportunity to be the first song. Once that song is selected, the other 4999 songs have an equal opportunity to be the second song (and so on). All possibilities (songs) are equally likely. You want iTunes to factor in the artist/album of songs it just played in deciding what to play next -- that isn't random. Why should it care what the artist or album is? It's just taking all of the songs and putting them in a random order.

After all, it's possible you could shuffle your library and hear every song from one album first. It's highly improbable, but it's still possible.

 Why wouldn't it? The odds of hearing all 300 artists without a repeat are very slim. That means it's extremely likely you'll hear one artist twice before hearing another at all. That's how it works.

You guys don't want random. What you want is an even distribution.

I do know what random means, and it's obvious there's a problem with randomization when out of 5000+ songs, it plays songs from the same few artists/albums over and over again. It's not just a coincidence if it does it every time. If I wanted to hear 3 or 4 artists' songs randomly played over and over again, I'd put those 3 or 4 artists in their own playlist and randomize just those artists. It shouldn't play those 3 or 4 artists over and over and over again when there are 200+ something other artists to choose from. I understand what you're saying, but that doesn't take away from the fact that in randomizing the songs, iTunes tends to pick from the same few albums regardless of how many songs you're randomizing. I could have 10 billion songs in my iTunes library, and iTunes would still pick songs from the same few albums over and over until the songs from those albums were all played, at which point it would pick different albums to play. I don't expect to hear every artist once before hearing the same artist again, but hearing the same person 4 or 5 times within 15 songs is hardly random! So yes, it does suck, and yes, Apple really should implement some kind of code into iTunes to tell it "if you just played a song from Artist/Album 'A,' play some other songs before playing another song from Artist/Album 'A' again."

That doesn't happen with me. I think I know what's wrong. It appears iTunes is stuck on the same "seed." Try this: Put all of your songs in a playlist. Make sure the left sorting column is clicked. Highlight all of the problem albums, then click shuffle. If the highlighted albums are clumped towards the top, option-click shuffle to reshuffle. Keep doing that until you get something you like.

Of course, they couldn't do your suggestion because it wouldn't be random. :)

Ok, I love to post lists. Don't know how I missed this thread.

Out of a library of 4812 songs:

1. Under My Thumb - Rolling Stones (Hot Rocks)
2. Face Up - New Order (Low-life)
3. I'm So Tired - Beatles (Anthology 3)
4. Heavy Metal Drummer - Wilco (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)
5. Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood (Welcome to the Pleasuredome)
6. Green Shirt - Elvis Costello (Armed Forces)
7. Pleasant Valley Sunday - Monkees (Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones)
8. The State that I Am In - Belle & Sebastian (Tigermilk)
9. Movie Script Ending - Death Cab for Cutie (The Photo Album)
10. Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes (Elephant)

All in all, I'm very satisfied with that list. The Monkees was the only song that hadn't been played in the last six months. Wilco, Costello and B&S are all on my Top 100 most played list and I'm So Tired (the original on the White Album) is my single favourite Beatles song, and hass been since high school when I was OBSESSED with The Beatles. Oddly, the two artists with the most tracks in my library (Pet Shop Boys and The Wedding Present) are not represented.

Make a smart playlist with one requirement that all the songs meet (Size greater than 0MB, Last Played is after 1980, Added before 2006, etc.) and limit it to 10 songs selected at random. Whenever you want 10 random songs, just delete all of the songs in the playlist and it will repopulate it.

That worked fine, but what is the difference doing that or using party shuffle, library, 10songs, refresh?

Anyway, this is what my smartlist, called random got....

Should I Let You In? Belinda Carlisle Heaven On Earth Pop
Can't Get It Out of My Head Electric Light Orchestra Greatest Hits Rock
Bookends Simon & Garfunkel Simon & Garfunkel Greatest Hits Rock 1
Bastille Day John Tesh Monterey Nights Easy Listening
52 Girls The B-52's Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation Rock

Desperado The Eagles Their Greatest Hits Rock 1
Heaven's Here On Earth Tracy Chapman New Beginning Folk 1

Party Shuffle isn't truly random. There's no way to have it choose songs regardless of whether or not they've been played already.

Party Shuffle isn't truly random. There's no way to have it choose songs regardless of whether or not they've been played already.

It chooses based on wether the song has been played before?

Creating a live mix using Party Shuffle

You can use Party Shuffle (in the Source list) to create a dynamic playlist made up of a random selection of songs in your library or any playlist. This "live mix" allows you to see a list of songs that have played or are about to play, and edit the list at any time.

Yes; it's not completely random. You can also have it play highly rated songs more often.

This is why hitting "random" can be dangerous... and why I fear the possibility of a screenless, random flashPod:

Track 7 (Untitled) - Fu*****usha - Live II (PSF 15/16)
Come In Alone - My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Ballad Of Summer Rounder - Ghost - Ghost
Bang On! - Propellerheads - Decksandrumsandrockandroll
A Northern Soul - The Verve - A Northern Soul
El Corazon A Contraluz - Inti-Illimani, John Williams & Paco Peña - Fragments Of A Dream
Amenity-Link - DJ Food & DK - Solid Steel: Now, Listen!

Shinkai Cruise #1 - PATE - Mo Psycho

well, this really couldnt end that badly bcos i only have an ibook containing just 1,000 of my mp3s(which is probably too many?):

The Thorns - Thorns
Guster - Fa Fa
Passengers - Ito Okashi
Fleetwood Mac - Gold Dust Woman
Simon and Garfunkel - The Boxer
Paul Simon - The Sound of Silence (from Live Rhymin')
The Thorns - Now I Know
U2 - Love Rescue Me
The Moody Blues - Sun is Still Shining
Steely Dan - Do It Again

Interesting idea for a thread. I find it interesting that of the 10 songs, two were by the Thorns, even though I only have 1 album by them, and I have 306 albums (3054 songs) in my library. Also, there is nothing by Neil Young even though I have 23 Neil Young albums in my library!

3. "Flesh Into Gear" - CKY
4. "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" - The Beatles

7. "Yellow Submarine" - The Beatles
8. "Rocky Racoon" - The Beatles
9. "Sun King" - The Beatles
10. "The Great Pretender" - The Platers (hahahaha... nice!)

140 of the 1079 songs in my Itunes Library (I have like 5 times as many songs, but this is what is in my iTunes library) are Beatles songs... so that ratio was a bit weird. Let's try it again without any Beatles songs.....

1. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" - Queen
2. "A Reminder" - The Perishers
3. "Over Under Sideways Down" - The Yardbirds

Beatles song :)

4. "House of the Rising Sun" - The Doors

7. "Hive" - 311

9. "Rocket Man" - Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
